Search for antiproton decay at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator
A search for antiproton decay has been made at the Fermilab Antiproton
Accumulator. Limits are placed on thirteen antiproton decay modes. The results
include the first explicit experimental limits on the muonic decay modes of the
antiproton, and the first limits on the decay modes e- gamma gamma, and e-
omega. The most stringent limit is for the decay mode pbar-> e- gamma. At 90%
C.L. we find that tau/B(pbar-> e- gamma) > 7 x 10^5 yr. The most stringent
limit for decay modes with a muon in the final state is for the decay pbar->
mu- gamma. At 90% C.L. we find that tau/B(pbar-> mu- gamma) > 5 x 10^4 yr.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. D. Final results on 13

Influence of a Feshbach resonance on the photoassociation of LiCs
We analyse the formation of ultracold 7Li133Cs molecules in the rovibrational
ground state through photoassociation into the B1Pi state, which has recently
been reported [J. Deiglmayr et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 133004 (2008)].
Absolute rate constants for photoassociation at large detunings from the atomic
asymptote are determined and are found to be surprisingly large. The
photoassociation process is modeled using a full coupled-channel calculation
for the continuum state, taking all relevant hyperfine states into account. The
enhancement of the photoassociation rate is found to be caused by an `echo' of
the triplet component in the singlet component of the scattering wave function
at the inner turning point of the lowest triplet a3Sigma+ potential. This
perturbation can be ascribed to the existence of a broad Feshbach resonance at
low scattering energies. Our results elucidate the important role of couplings
in the scattering wave function for the formation of deeply bound ground state
molecules via photoassociation.Comment: Added Erratum, 20 pages, 9 figure
Structural phase transitions in multipole traps
A small number of laser-cooled ions trapped in a linear radiofrequency
multipole trap forms a hollow tube structure. We have studied, by means of
molecular dynamics simulations, the structural transition from a double ring to
a single ring of ions. We show that the single-ring configuration has the
advantage to inhibit the thermal transfer from the rf-excited radial components
of the motion to the axial component, allowing to reach the Doppler limit
temperature along the direction of the trap axis. Once cooled in this
particular configuration, the ions experience an angular dependency of the
confinement if the local adiabaticity parameter exceeds the empirical limit.
Bunching of the ion structures can then be observed and an analytic expression
is proposed to take into account for this behaviour
Search for muonic decays of the antiproton at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator
A search for antiproton decay has been made at the Fermilab Antiproton
Accumulator. Limits are placed on six antiproton decay modes which contain a
final-state muon. At the 90% C.L. we find that
tau/B(mu gamma) > 5.0 x 10^4 yr,
tau/B(mu pi0) > 4.8 x 10^4 yr,
tau/B(mu eta) > 7.9 x 10^3 yr,
tau/B(mu gamma gamma) > 2.3 x 10^4 yr,
tau/B(mu K0S > 4.3 x 10^3 yr, and
tau/B(mu K0L) > 6.5 x 10^3 yr.Comment: 8 pages + 3 Postscript figure
Theoretical model for ultracold molecule formation via adaptive feedback control
We investigate pump-dump photoassociation of ultracold molecules with
amplitude- and phase-modulated femtosecond laser pulses. For this purpose a
perturbative model for the light-matter interaction is developed and combined
with a genetic algorithm for adaptive feedback control of the laser pulse
shapes. The model is applied to the formation of 85Rb2 molecules in a
magneto-optical trap. We find for optimized pulse shapes an improvement for the
formation of ground state molecules by more than a factor of 10 compared to
unshaped pulses at the same pump-dump delay time, and by 40% compared to
unshaped pulses at the respective optimal pump-dump delay time. Since our model
yields directly the spectral amplitudes and phases of the optimized pulses, the
results are directly applicable in pulse shaping experiments

Virologic, Immunologic and Clinical Responses in Foreign-Born versus US-Born HIV-1 Infected Adults Initiating Antiretroviral Therapy: An Observational Cohort Study
Introduction: Mortality rates within the first year of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) initiation are several-fold higher in resource-limited countries than in resource-replete settings. However studies in western countries examining virologic, immunologic and clinical responses after cART initiation in indigenous versus non-indigenous populations have shown mixed results. This study aimed to determine whether there is a difference in these outcomes in a United States setting between foreign-born and US-born patients. Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study of HIV-1 infected adults in one urban clinic in the United States compared virologic suppression, immune recovery and rates of AIDS defining events (ADEs) within the first year of cART using linear mixed effect models, log rank tests and Cox proportional hazard models. Data were analyzed for 94 foreign-born and 1242 US-born patients. Results: Foreign-born patients were younger (31.7 years versus 38.5 years), more often female (38.3% versus 27.1%), less often injection drug users (3.2% versus 9.5%) or men who have sex with men (19.0% versus 54.5%), and had higher loss to follow-up rates (14.9% versus 6.2%). No significant differences were detected between the groups in suppression of plasma HIV-1 RNA, CD4+ cell recovery or development of ADEs. Conclusions: During the first year on cART, virologic suppression, immune recovery and development of ADEs were comparable between foreign-born and US-born patients in care in a US clinic. Differential rates of loss to follow-up warrant further investigation in the foreign-born population
The magnetic dipole transitions in the binding system
The magnetic dipole transitions between the vector mesons and their
relevant pseudoscalar mesons (, , , ,
and etc, the binding states of system) of
the family are interesting. To see the `hyperfine' splitting due to
spin-spin interaction is an important topic for understanding the spin-spin
interaction and the spectrum of the the binding system. The
knowledge about the magnetic dipole transitions is also very useful for
identifying the vector boson mesons experimentally, whose masses are
just slightly above the masses of their relevant pseudoscalar mesons
accordingly. Considering the possibility to observe the vector mesons via the
transitions at factory and the potentially usages of the theoretical
estimate on the transitions, we fucus our efforts on calculating the magnetic
dipole transitions, i.e. precisely to calculate the rates for the transitions
such as decays and , and particularly
work in the Behte-Salpeter framework. In the estimate, as a typical example, we
carefully investigate the dependance of the rate
on the mass difference as well.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl
Afferent specific role of NMDA receptors for the circuit integration of hippocampal neurogliaform cells.
This is the final version of the article. Available from Nature Publishing Group via the DOI in this record.Appropriate integration of GABAergic interneurons into nascent cortical circuits is critical for ensuring normal information processing within the brain. Network and cognitive deficits associated with neurological disorders, such as schizophrenia, that result from NMDA receptor-hypofunction have been mainly attributed to dysfunction of parvalbumin-expressing interneurons that paradoxically express low levels of synaptic NMDA receptors. Here, we reveal that throughout postnatal development, thalamic, and entorhinal cortical inputs onto hippocampal neurogliaform cells are characterized by a large NMDA receptor-mediated component. This NMDA receptor-signaling is prerequisite for developmental programs ultimately responsible for the appropriate long-range AMPAR-mediated recruitment of neurogliaform cells. In contrast, AMPAR-mediated input at local Schaffer-collateral synapses on neurogliaform cells remains normal following NMDA receptor-ablation. These afferent specific deficits potentially impact neurogliaform cell mediated inhibition within the hippocampus and our findings reveal circuit loci implicating this relatively understudied interneuron subtype in the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by NMDA receptor-hypofunction.Proper brain function depends on the correct assembly of excitatory and inhibitory neurons into neural circuits. Here the authors show that during early postnatal development in mice, NMDAR signaling via activity of long-range synaptic inputs onto neurogliaform cells is required for their appropriate integration into the hippocampal circuitry. We thank Daniel Abebe for mouse colony maintenance and Kurt Auville for additional assistance with confocal imaging. A search for antiproton decay at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator
We report on the search for anti-proton decay at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator Ring. Experiment 868 (APEX) was designed to search for two-body p̄ decay modes containing an electron in the final state (→e+X)(p̄→e+X) and to conduct an exploratory search for decays with a muon in the final state (→μ+X).(p̄→μ+X). Data were taken for three months in the Spring of 1995. Preliminary results yield lower limits on /BRτp̄/BR in the range of 105–106105–106 years for selected channels having an electron in the final state, improving on previous results by approximately 3 orders of magnitude. Additionally, we report the first preliminary results for the →μγp̄→μγ and →μπ0p̄→μπ0 decay channels. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87906/2/419_1.pd
