Rapid collapse of spin waves in non-uniform phases of the second Landau level

The spin degree of freedom in quantum phases of the second Landau level is probed by resonant light scattering. The long wavelength spin wave, which monitors the degree of spin polarization, is at the Zeeman energy in the fully spin-polarized state at ν\nu=3. At lower filling factors the intensity of the Zeeman mode collapses indicating loss of polarization. A novel continuum of low-lying excitations emerges that dominates near ν\nu=8/3 and ν\nu=5/2. Resonant Rayleigh scattering reveals that quantum fluids for ν<3\nu<3 break up into robust domain structures. While the state at ν\nu=5/2 is considered to be fully polarized, these results reveal unprecedented roles for spin degrees of freedom.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Modification of erythrocyte Na+/Li+ countertransport kinetics by two types of thiol group

AbstractErythrocyte Na−/Li+ countertransport activity is decreased by reagents that react with thiol groups. An understanding of the role of these groups in control of Na+/Li+ countertransport may help to explain its association with disease states. The effect of thiol reactive agents on the kinetic parameters of Na+/Li+ countertransport has not previously been described. In choline medium, N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and iodoacetamide (IAamide) cause a rapid decrease of about 40% in Km for external sodium (Km(So)) that is complete in 10 s with a much smaller change in Vmax and an increase in the Vmax/Km ratio. In Na medium, NEM and IAamide both cause a rapid decrease in Km(So) and Vmax. With NEM the partial reduction in Vmax is complete in 100 s although the NEM is sufficient to reduce Vmax up to 15 min. With IAamide the decrease in Vmax is initially slower but it continues apparently towards complete inhibition. These results indicate at least two types of thiol group controlling Na+/Li+ countertransport kinetics. The type 1 thiol reaction is Na independent and causes an increase in the apparent rate constant for Na association with the unloaded carrier so that Vmax/Km rises and Km(So) decreases. The type 2 thiol reaction is facilitated by Na at the outside ion-binding site and causes a decrease in Vmax, possibly by total blockage of carriers with IAamide but by a different mechanism with NEM such as reduced turnover rate

Trends in indirect liver function marker testing in Wales from 2000 to 2017 and their association with age and sex: an observational study

Objective If non-invasive markers of liver fibrosis were recorded frequently enough in clinical practice, it might be feasible to use them for opportunistic community screening for liver disease. We aimed to determine their current pattern of usage in the national primary care population in Wales.Design Using the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank at Swansea University (2000–2017), we quantified the frequency of common liver blood tests (aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), platelet count and albumin) used in fibrosis marker algorithms. We examined measurement variation by age and sex. Results During the 18-year study period, there were 2 145 178 adult patients with at least one blood test available for analysis. Over the study period, the percentage of SAIL patients receiving an ALT test in each year increased from 2% to 33%, with platelet count and albumin measurement increasing by a similar factor. AST testing, although initially rising, had decreased to 1% by the end of the study. AST and ALT values varied by age and sex, particularly in males with the upper normal range of ALT values decreasing rapidly from 90 U/L at age 30 to 45 U/L by age 80.Conclusion The reduction in AST testing to only 1% of the adult population limits the use of many non-invasive liver marker algorithms. To enable widespread screening, alternative algorithms for liver fibrosis that do not depend on AST should be developed. Liver fibrosis markers should be modified to include age-specific and sex-specific normal ranges

New Insights into the Structure of (1→3,1→6)-β-D-Glucan Side Chains in the Candida glabrata Cell Wall

β-glucan is a (1→3)-β-linked glucose polymer with (1→6)-β-linked side chains and a major component of fungal cell walls. β-glucans provide structural integrity to the fungal cell wall. The nature of the (1–6)-β-linked side chain structure of fungal (1→3,1→6)-β-D-glucans has been very difficult to elucidate. Herein, we report the first detailed structural characterization of the (1→6)-β-linked side chains of Candida glabrata using high-field NMR. The (1→6)-β-linked side chains have an average length of 4 to 5 repeat units spaced every 21 repeat units along the (1→3)-linked polymer backbone. Computer modeling suggests that the side chains have a bent curve structure that allows for a flexible interconnection with parallel (1→3)-β-D-glucan polymers, and/or as a point of attachment for proteins. Based on these observations we propose new approaches to how (1→6)-β-linked side chains interconnect with neighboring glucan polymers in a manner that maximizes fungal cell wall strength, while also allowing for flexibility, or plasticity

Blood pressure change across pregnancy in white British and Pakistani women: analysis of 1 data from the Born in Bradford cohort

The incidence of gestational hypertension (GH) and pre-eclampsia (PE) is increasing. Use of blood pressure (BP) change patterns may improve early detection of BP abnormalities. We used Linear spline random-effects models to estimate BP patterns across pregnancy for white British and Pakistani women. Pakistani women compared to white British women had lower BP during the first two trimesters of pregnancy, irrespective of the development of GH or PE or presence of a risk factor. Pakistani compared to white British women with GH and PE showed steeper BP increases towards the end of pregnancy. Pakistani women were half as likely to develop GH, but as likely to develop PE than white British women. To conclude; BP trajectories differ by ethnicity. Because GH developed evenly from 20 weeks gestation, and PE occurred more commonly after 36 weeks in both ethnic groups, the lower BP up to the third trimester in Pakistani women resulted in a lower GH rate, whereas PE rates, influenced by the steep third trimester BP increase were similar. Criteria for diagnosing GH and PE may benefit from considering ethnic differences in BP change across pregnancy

QLS front-line retention manual: methods for achieving a 94% cohort retention rate in longitudinal research

Permission to include the report granted by Gary O’Connor, Chief Executive Officer, ONTARIO PROBLEM GAMBLING RESEARCH CENTREThis Front-Line Manual, written mainly by and from the perspective of the QLS front-line staff describes how they developed, tested, and put into practice the methodology to achieve their extremely high retention rate. By discussing the underlying rationale for different approaches and tools, as well as providing numerous specific practical examples, this manual will hopefully assist other longitudinal studies in improving retention rates, and thus the strength of the results of those studies.Ye
