The Moduli Space of Rational Maps

We construct the moduli space, Md, of degree d rational maps on ℙ1 in terms of invariants of binary forms. We apply this construction to give explicit invariants and equations for M3. Using this construction, we give a method for solving the following problems: (1) explicitly construct, from a moduli point P ∈ Md(k), a rational map ∅ with the given moduli; (2) find the field of definition of a rational map ∅. We work out the method in detail for the case d = 3

Potentiometric analysis of sea water II. Determination of titration alkalinity

Sea water is alkaline mainly due to the presence of appreciable quantities of carbonate, bicarbonate and borate ions. These react with the H+ from the ionization of water leaving an excess of OH\u27 present…

Potentiometric analysis of sea water I. Determination of chlorinity

    Get PDF
In general the determination of chlorinity of sea water is made by the classical Mohr method except when greater accuracy is desired in which case the more accurate but longer Volhard method is used. When the results are utilized for hydrodynamical considerations the Mohr method is normally used because of its speed in the titration of the numerous samples; but to attain the accuracy required in this exacting work, extreme care is demanded with the shaking during titration and in the proper selection of end point

The role of labelling bias in the portrayals of acts of 'terrorism': representations of Muslims versus non-Muslims

Several high-profile negative events involving Muslim perpetrators have recently been covered by the media. We investigated whether the same negative actions are more likely to be labeled ‘terrorism’ when they are committed by Muslims than when they are committed by White non-Muslims. In Experiment 1 (n = 60), using a real article about a Muslim perpetrator and a modified version about a non-Muslim perpetrator, we found that participants were more likely to identify a crime as terrorism when it was perpetrated by a Muslim. The label ‘terrorism’ also mediated the effect of Muslim identity on negative judgments of the behavior. In Experiment 2 (n = 60) we replicated the results of Experiment 1 and clarified that the effects persisted when we used a real article about a non-Muslim perpetrator and a modified version about a Muslim perpetrator. We discuss implications for cross-group communication and representations of Muslims in the media

Observations of potential ultra high energy gamma-ray sources above 10(15) eV

    Get PDF
The Haverah Park 50 m water-Cerenkov array has been used to examine a number of periodic sources for ultra high energy gamma-ray emission above 10 to the 15th power eV. The data, recorded between 1 Jan. 1979 and 31 Dec. 1984, feature a modest angular resolution of approx 3 deg with millisecond arrival time resolution post 1982. The sources investigated include the Crab pulsar, Her X-1, Au0115 + 63 and Geminga. All objects have been detected by workers in the TeV region, with varying degrees of confidence

Capital Attrition: Error Rates in Capital Cases, 1973-1995

Americans seem to be of two minds about the death penalty. In the last several years, the overall number of executions has risen steeply, reaching a fifty year high this year. Although two-thirds of the public support the penalty, this figure represents a sharp decline from the four-fifths of the population that endorsed the death penalty only six years ago, leaving support for capital punishment at a twenty year low. When life without parole is offered as an alternative, support for the penalty drops even more – often below a majority. Grants of executive clemency reached a twenty year high in 1999

Targets for the MalI repressor at the divergent Escherichia coliK-12malX-malI promoters

    Get PDF
Random mutagenesis has been used to identify the target DNA sites for the MalI repressor at the divergent Escherichia coli K-12 malX-malI promoters. The malX promoter is repressed by MalI binding to a DNA site located from position -24 to position -9, upstream of the malX promoter transcript start. The malI promoter is repressed by MalI binding from position +3 to position +18, downstream of the malI transcript start. MalI binding at the malI promoter target is not required for repression of the malX promoter. Similarly, MalI binding at the malX promoter target is not required for repression of the malI. Although the malX and malI promoters are regulated by a single DNA site for cyclic AMP receptor protein, they function independently and each is repressed by MalI binding to a different independent operator site
