Water quality monitor
The preprototype water quality monitor (WQM) subsystem was designed based on a breadboard monitor for pH, specific conductance, and total organic carbon (TOC). The breadboard equipment demonstrated the feasibility of continuous on-line analysis of potable water for a spacecraft. The WQM subsystem incorporated these breadboard features and, in addition, measures ammonia and includes a failure detection system. The sample, reagent, and standard solutions are delivered to the WQM sensing manifold where chemical operations and measurements are performed using flow through sensors for conductance, pH, TOC, and NH3. Fault monitoring flow detection is also accomplished in this manifold assembly. The WQM is designed to operate automatically using a hardwired electronic controller. In addition, automatic shutdown is incorporated which is keyed to four flow sensors strategically located within the fluid system
Tracking in a space variant active vision system
Without the ability to foveate on and maintain foveation, active vision for applications such as surveillance, object recognition and object tracking are difficult to build. Although foveation in cartesian coordinates is being actively pursued by many, multi-resolution high accuracy foveation in log polar space has not been given much attention. This paper addresses the use of foveation to track a single object as well as multiple objects for a simulated space variant active vision system. Complex logarithmic mapping is chosen firstly because it provides high resolution and wide angle viewing. Secondly, the spatially variant structure of log polar space leads to an object increasing in size as it moves towards the fovea. This is important as we know which object is closer to the fovea at any instant in time.<br /

Vitamin A and iron supplementation of Indonesian pregnant women benefits vitamin A status of their infants
Many Indonesian infants have an inadequate nutritional status, which may be due in part to inadequate maternal nutrition during pregnancy. This study was designed to investigate whether infant nutritional status could be improved by maternal vitamin A and Fe supplementation during gestation. Mothers of these infants from five villages had been randomly assigned on an individual basis, supervised and double-blind, to receive supplementation once weekly from approximately 18 weeks of pregnancy until delivery. Supplementation comprised 120 mg Fe and 500 μg folic acid with or without 4800 retinol equivalent vitamin A. Mothers of infants from four other villages who participated in the national Fe and folic acid supplementation programme were also recruited; intake of tablets was not supervised. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters of infants and their mothers were assessed approximately 4 months after delivery. Infants of mothers supplemented with vitamin A plus Fe had higher serum retinol concentrations than infants of mothers supplemented with Fe alone. However, the proportion of infants with serum retinol concentrations 70 n all groups. Maternal and infant serum retinol concentrations were correlated. Fe status, weight and length of infants were similar in all groups. Fe status of girls was better than that of boys, but boys were heavier and longer. We conclude that supplementation with vitamin A in conjunction with Fe supplementation of women during pregnancy benefits vitamin A status of their infants. However, considering the large proportion of infants with marginal serum retinol concentrations, it may still be necessary to increase their vitamin A intake
Evidence for a Fractional Quantum Hall Nematic State in Parallel Magnetic Fields
We report magneto-transport measurements for the fractional quantum Hall
state at filling factor 5/2 as a function of applied parallel magnetic
field (). As is increased, the 5/2 state becomes increasingly
anisotropic, with the in-plane resistance along the direction of
becoming more than 30 times larger than in the perpendicular direction.
Remarkably, the resistance anisotropy ratio remains constant over a relatively
large temperature range, yielding an energy gap which is the same for both
directions. Our data are qualitatively consistent with a fractional quantum
Hall \textit{nematic} phase
Observation of An Anisotropic Wigner Crystal
We report a new correlated phase of two-dimensional charged carriers in high
magnetic fields, manifested by an anisotropic insulating behavior at low
temperatures. It appears near Landau level filling factor in hole
systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells when the sample is tilted in
magnetic field to an intermediate angle. The parallel field component
() leads to a crossing of the lowest two Landau levels, and an
elongated hole wavefunction in the direction of . Under these
conditions, the in-plane resistance exhibits an insulating behavior, with the
resistance along more than 10 times smaller than the resistance
perpendicular to . We interpret this anisotropic insulating phase as a
two-component, striped Wigner crystal
