Algorithms for Scheduling Problems

This edited book presents new results in the area of algorithm development for different types of scheduling problems. In eleven chapters, algorithms for single machine problems, flow-shop and job-shop scheduling problems (including their hybrid (flexible) variants), the resource-constrained project scheduling problem, scheduling problems in complex manufacturing systems and supply chains, and workflow scheduling problems are given. The chapters address such subjects as insertion heuristics for energy-efficient scheduling, the re-scheduling of train traffic in real time, control algorithms for short-term scheduling in manufacturing systems, bi-objective optimization of tortilla production, scheduling problems with uncertain (interval) processing times, workflow scheduling for digital signal processor (DSP) clusters, and many more

Task force: Corporate social responsibility in Japan und Österreich

This report approaches Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Japan and Austria. It was elaborated by students in the frame of a 'Task Force' seminar. It addresses empirically the issues of 1) public and private reporting of CSR, 2) case studies on responsible management in small and medium sized enterprises and 3) attitudes of consumers towards socially as well as ecologically responsible ('gentle') tourism and the perception of Austria and Japan as destinations for sustainable tourism. The seminar was organised in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. -- Das vorliegende Heft untersucht Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in den Ländern Japan und Österreich. Es beinhaltet drei empirische Teilstudien, die von Studierenden im Rahmen eines 'Task-Force'-Seminars erarbeitet wurden: Teil 1 betrachtet die CSR in öffentlicher und privater Berichterstattung. Teil 2 beleuchtet in sechs Fallstudien 'verantwortungsvolles Management' in kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen. Teil 3 untersucht die Einstellung von Konsumenten gegenüber sozialen und Umweltaspekten bzw. verantwortungsvollem ('sanftem') Tourismus und die Wahrnehmung von Österreich und Japan als nachhaltige Reiseziele. Das Papier gibt drei Beiträge zu einer Veranstaltung im Rahmen der Workshopreihe 'Ordnung und Organisation der japanischen Wirtschaft' wieder. Stefan Voigt führt in Annahmen, Analysemethoden und Anwendungsmöglichkeiten der institutionenökonomischen Theorie ein. Dirk Wentzel greift auf die eingeführte Typologie von Institutionen zurück und widmet sich einem besonderen Institutionentypus, der Selbstregulierung. Andreas Nabor beschäftigt sich mit Reformpotenzialen, Pfadabhängigkeit und adaptiver Effizienz des japanischen Finanzsystems; dabei greift er auf institutionenökonomische Analysemethoden zurück. -- The paper ('Institutional Economics and Japanese Studies') contains three contributions to a workshop as part of a workshop series on 'Organisation and Order of the Japanese Economy'. Stefan Voigt introduces the reader to the assumptions, analytical methods and areas of application of institutional economics as a theory-based approach. Dirk Wentzel makes use of the established typology of institutions and discusses a peculiar type, namely self-regulation. Workshop Organisation und Ordnung der Japanischen Wirtschaft IV - Themenschwerpunkt: Wahrnehmung, Institutionenökonomik und Japanstudien

Die Rolle von Wahrnehmung für institutionentheoretisch-basierte Ansätze in den Japanstudien wird in drei Beiträgen beleuchtet. Walter Ötsch diskutiert die komplexen Prozesse der Wahrnehmung von Realität. Er betont die Bedeutung kognitiver Muster in Raum und Zeit (Kultur) für ein mentales framing. Katja Triplett und Michael Pye untersuchen die Rolle von 'Rationalität' in religiösen Transaktionen in Japan. Auf der Basis mehrerer Fallstudien argumentieren sie, dass solche Aktivitäten häufig als zweckrational in einem engen ökonomischen Sinn verstanden werden können. Dirk Nabers betrachtet die Entwicklung internationaler Beziehungen und stellt einen Forschungsrahmen vor, kognitive und diskursive Phänomene genauer zu beachten. -- The relevance of cognition for institution-based models in Japanese studies is discussed in three papers. Walter Ötsch discusses the complex processes how we perceive reality. He stresses the importance of cognitive paradigms in time and space (culture) for mental framing. Katja Triplett and Michael Pye analyse the role of 'rationality' in religious transactions in Japan. Looking at several case studies, they argue that activities can often be understood as goal-driven in a narrow economic sense. Friederike Bosse of the Federation of German Industries covers early experiences with the German Year from the perspective of German business. Werner Pascha of the University of Duisburg-Essen discusses basic issues of a socio-economic analysis of the German Year, stressing public good-properties and signaling. Ultrafine-Grained Metals

Ultrafine-grained metallic materials produced by severe plastic deformation methods are at the cutting edge of modern materials science. UFG-metals exhibit outstanding properties which make them very interesting for structural or functional engineering applications. Fifteen articles in this special issue address a broad variety of topics: New developments in severe plastic deformation techniques, advances in modeling and simulation of the severe plastic deformation processes, mechanical properties under monotonic and cyclic loading of homogenous and graded UFG structures, dominating deformation mechanisms in UFG materials, advances and strategies for high conductivity UFG-materials, correlation between severe plastic deformation parameters and resulting materials properties and peculiarities in the corrosion behavior of UFG materials. In dem Heft werden drei Papiere vorgestellt, die im Oktober 2000 auf einem Workshop in Heidelberg vorgetragen wurden. Gefragt wird danach, inwieweit die sog. 'new economy' mit neuen Formen der Arbeitsorganisation verbunden ist. Ziel des Workshops war es, eine theoriegestützte komparative Diskussion über die Erfahrungen in Japan, den USA und der EU zu anzuregen. Christoph Scherrer stellt einige theoretische Hintergründe vor und fragt, inwieweit das jüngste Produktivitätswachstum in den USA als Indikator für ein Wachstum ohne zyklische Abschwünge gewertet werden kann. Michael Müller-Camen u. a. präsentieren eine Langzeitstudie zu europäischen Personalkonzepten und vesuchen, Schlußfolgerungen im Hinblick auf Europas 'new economy' zu ziehen. Wolfram Manzenreiter betrachtet schließlich Japans IT-Industrien und fragt, inwieweit die Beschäftigungssituation betroffen ist. -- This is a collection of three papers presented during a workshop in October 2000 in Heidelberg. They discuss to what extent the so-called 'new economy' is associated with news ways of organising labour. The aim of the workshop was to organise a comparative discussion on Japan, the USA, and the EU, making use of theory-based reflections. Christoph Scherrer presents some theoretical background on the issue of the 'new economy' and asks whether the recent experience of the US productivity performance is indicative of the possibility of growth without cyclical downturns. Michael Muller et al. look at a long-term study of personnel concepts in Europe and try to draw conclusions on what may be happening in Europe´s 'new economy'.
