The Spitzer view of the extragalactic universe
The Spitzer Space Telescope was launched in August 2003. Scientists from around the world have applied its orders-of-magnitude gain in imaging and spectroscopic capability to a wide array of topics in extragalactic research. Spitzer studies have found massive galaxies at redshifts greater than 6, resolved the cosmic background at 200 μm > λ > 20 μm into the dusty infrared-luminous galaxies that comprise it, directly detected dust-enshrouded star formation, and measured the star formation history of the universe to z > 3. In this review we examine a small fraction of the extragalactic studies from Spitzer that have been conducted in its first three years of operations
A progress report on using bolometers cooled by adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration
For sensitive detection of astronomical continuum radiation in the 200 micron to 3 mm wavelength range, bolometers are presently the detectors of choice. In order to approach the limits imposed by photon noise in a cryogenically cooled telescope in space, bolometers must be operated at temperatures near 0.1 K. Researchers report progress in building and using bolometers that operate at these temperatures. The most sensitive bolometer had an estimated noise equivalent power (NEP) of 7 x 10(exp 017) W Hz(exp -1/2). Researchers also briefly discuss the durability of paramagnetic salts used to cool the bolometers
Cell-fate determination by ubiquitin-dependent regulation of translation.
Metazoan development depends on the accurate execution of differentiation programs that allow pluripotent stem cells to adopt specific fates. Differentiation requires changes to chromatin architecture and transcriptional networks, yet whether other regulatory events support cell-fate determination is less well understood. Here we identify the ubiquitin ligase CUL3 in complex with its vertebrate-specific substrate adaptor KBTBD8 (CUL3(KBTBD8)) as an essential regulator of human and Xenopus tropicalis neural crest specification. CUL3(KBTBD8) monoubiquitylates NOLC1 and its paralogue TCOF1, the mutation of which underlies the neurocristopathy Treacher Collins syndrome. Ubiquitylation drives formation of a TCOF1-NOLC1 platform that connects RNA polymerase I with ribosome modification enzymes and remodels the translational program of differentiating cells in favour of neural crest specification. We conclude that ubiquitin-dependent regulation of translation is an important feature of cell-fate determination
Identification of the Microlens in Event MACHO-LMC-20
We report on the identification of the lens responsible for microlensing
event MACHO-LMC-20. As part of a \textit{Spitzer}/IRAC program conducting
mid-infrared follow-up of the MACHO Large Magellanic Cloud microlensing fields,
we discovered a significant flux excess at the position of the source star for
this event. These data, in combination with high resolution near-infrared
\textit{Magellan}/PANIC data has allowed us to classify the lens as an early M
dwarf in the thick disk of the Milky Way, at a distance of kpc. This
is only the second microlens to have been identified, the first also being a M
dwarf star in the disk. Together, these two events are still consistent with
the expected frequency of nearby stars in the Milky Way thin and thick disks

HST Imaging Polarimetry of the Gravitational Lens FSC10214+4724
We present imaging polarimetry of the extremely luminous, redshift 2.3 IRAS
source FSC10214+4724. The observations were obtained with HST's Faint Object
Camera in the F437M filter, which is free of strong emission lines. The 0.7
arcsec long arc is unresolved to 0.04 arcsec FWHM in the transverse direction,
and has an integrated polarization of 28 +/- 3 percent, in good agreement with
ground-based observations. The polarization position angle varies along the arc
by up to 35 deg. The overall position angle is 62 +/- 3 deg east of north. No
counterimage is detected to B = 27.5 mag (), giving an observed arc to
counterimage flux ratio greater than 250, considerably greater than the flux
ratio of 100 measured previously in the I-band. This implies that the
configuration of the object in the source plane at the B-band is different from
that at I-band, and/or that the lensing galaxy is dusty.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomical

Discovery of a 500 pc shell in the nucleus of Centaurus A
Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared images of the radio galaxy Centaurus A
reveal a shell-like, bipolar, structure 500 pc to the north and south of the
nucleus. This shell is seen in 5.8, 8.0 and 24 micron broad-band images. Such a
remarkable shell has not been previously detected in a radio galaxy and is the
first extragalactic nuclear shell detected at mid-infrared wavelengths. We
estimate that the shell is a few million years old and has a mass of order
million solar masses. A conservative estimate for the mechanical energy in the
wind driven bubble is 10^53 erg. The shell could have created by a small few
thousand solar mass nuclear burst of star formation. Alternatively, the
bolometric luminosity of the active nucleus is sufficiently large that it could
power the shell. Constraints on the shell's velocity are lacking. However, if
the shell is moving at 1000 km/s then the required mechanical energy would be

On quaternary complex Hadamard matrices of small orders
One of the main goals of design theory is to classify, characterize and count
various combinatorial objects with some prescribed properties. In most cases,
however, one quickly encounters a combinatorial explosion and even if the
complete enumeration of the objects is possible, there is no apparent way how
to study them in details, store them efficiently, or generate a particular one
rapidly. In this paper we propose a novel method to deal with these
difficulties, and illustrate it by presenting the classification of quaternary
complex Hadamard matrices up to order 8. The obtained matrices are members of
only a handful of parametric families, and each inequivalent matrix, up to
transposition, can be identified through its fingerprint.Comment: 7 page
