Age determination by sclerite numbers, and scale variations in six fish species from the Central Amazon (Osteichthyes, Characoidei)
The scales of 6 different species of three families (Brycon cf. melanopterus (Characidae), Semaprochilodus theraponura (Curimatidae), Semaprochilodus taeniulus (Curimatidae), Prochilodus nigricans (Curimatidae), Curimata cf . rutiloides (Curimatidae), Colossoma macropomum (Serrasalmidae)) from the Central Amazon are described with regard to their size, shape, and number of sclerites originated from different parts of the body. For each species the body area is defined from which standard scales should be taken, and age determination is conducted by the sclerite method after WERDER (1983)
Age determination by scale analysis in juvenile matrinchã (Brycon cf. melanopterus MÜLLER & TROSCHEL, Teleostei: Characoidei) a tropical characin from the Central Amazon
- The experimental results prove the existence of a two-days' rhythm of sclerite formation in juvenile Matrinchâ (Brycon sp.). - Identical scale patterns of wild-fish and pond-fish permit the application of a formula for age determination derived from pond experiments, also to fish from natural environments. - The exactness of the formula for age determination can only be met by the otolith method. since the latter requires considerably more technical effort, and includes the risk of dealing with unreadable otoliths, the scale method presents itself as quite feasable, also for field work. - All back-calculated spawning events coincide with increasing water-level, and high precipitations, thus confirming the fishermens' knowledge about interactions between these two ecological factors and their importance for the onset of spawning. - The back-calculated spawning events let assume, that no spawning takes place before a certain level of the river (ca. 20 m above sea-level) has been surpassed, which seems to be an ecological necessity. Large numbers of fry can only survive when sufficiently large areas of land have become inundated. Further research is necessary to confirm whether the method for age determination is applyable to other populations and age groups, too
Growth Hormone (GH)-Releasing Peptide Stimulation of GH Release from Human Somatotroph Adenoma Cells: Interaction with GH-Releasing Hormone, Thyrotropin- Releasing Hormone, and Octreotide.
The synthetic hexapeptide GH-releasing peptide (GHRP; His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) specifically stimulates GH secretion in humans in vivo and in animals in vitro and in vivo via a still unknown receptor and mechanism. To determine the effect of GHRP on human somatotroph cells in vitro, we stimulated cell cultures derived from 12 different human somatotroph adenomas with GHRP alone and in combination with GH-releasing hormone (GHRH), TRH, and the somatostatin analog octreotide. GH secretion of all 12 adenoma cultures could be stimulated with GHRP, whereas GHRH was active only in 6 adenoma cultures. In GHRH-responsive cell cultures, simultaneous application of GHRH and GHRP had an additive effect on GH secretion. TRH stimulated GH release in 4 of 7 adenoma cultures; in TRH-responsive cell cultures there was also an additive effect of GHRP and TRH on GH secretion. In 5 of 9 adenoma cultures investigated, octreotide inhibited basal GH secretion. In these cell cultures, GHRP-induced GH release was suppressed by octreotide. In 5 of 5 cases, the protein kinase-C inhibitor phloretin partly inhibited GHRP-stimulated GH release, but not basal GH secretion. In summary, GH secretion was stimulated by GHRP in all somatotroph adenomas investigated, indicating that its unknown receptor and signaling pathway are expressed more consistently in somatotroph adenoma cells than those for GHRH, TRH, and somatostatin. Our data give further evidence that GHRP-stimulated GH secretion is mediated by a receptor different from that for GHRH or TRH, respectively, and that protein kinase-C is involved in the signal transduction pathway. Because human somatotroph adenoma cell cultures respond differently to various neuropeptides (GHRH, TRH, somatostatin, and others), they provide a model for further investigation of the mechanism of action of GHRP-induced GH secretion
To wet or not to wet: that is the question
Wetting transitions have been predicted and observed to occur for various
combinations of fluids and surfaces. This paper describes the origin of such
transitions, for liquid films on solid surfaces, in terms of the gas-surface
interaction potentials V(r), which depend on the specific adsorption system.
The transitions of light inert gases and H2 molecules on alkali metal surfaces
have been explored extensively and are relatively well understood in terms of
the least attractive adsorption interactions in nature. Much less thoroughly
investigated are wetting transitions of Hg, water, heavy inert gases and other
molecular films. The basic idea is that nonwetting occurs, for energetic
reasons, if the adsorption potential's well-depth D is smaller than, or
comparable to, the well-depth of the adsorbate-adsorbate mutual interaction. At
the wetting temperature, Tw, the transition to wetting occurs, for entropic
reasons, when the liquid's surface tension is sufficiently small that the free
energy cost in forming a thick film is sufficiently compensated by the fluid-
surface interaction energy. Guidelines useful for exploring wetting transitions
of other systems are analyzed, in terms of generic criteria involving the
"simple model", which yields results in terms of gas-surface interaction

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study of Interaction between Model Rough Hydrophobic Surfaces
We study some aspects of hydrophobic interaction between molecular rough and
flexible model surfaces. The model we use in this work is based on a model we
used previously (Eun, C.; Berkowitz, M. L. J. Phys. Chem. B 2009, 113,
13222-13228), when we studied the interaction between model patches of lipid
membranes. Our original model consisted of two graphene plates with attached
polar headgroups; the plates were immersed in a water bath. The interaction
between such plates can be considered as an example of a hydrophilic
interaction. In the present work we modify our previous model by removing the
charge from the zwitterionic headgroups. As a result of this procedure, the
plate character changes; it becomes hydrophobic. By separating the total
interaction (or potential of mean force, PMF) between plates into the direct
and the water-mediated interactions we observe that the latter changes from
repulsive to attractive, clearly emphasizing the important role of water as a
medium. We also investigate the effect of roughness and flexibility of the
headgroups on the interaction between plates and observe that roughness
enhances the character of the hydrophobic interaction. The presence of a
dewetting transition in a confined space between charge-removed plates confirms
that the interaction between plates is strongly hydrophobic. In addition, we
notice that there is a shallow local minimum in the PMF in case of
charge-removed plates. We find that this minimum is associated with the
configurational changes that flexible headgroups undergo, as the two plates are

British press attitudes towards the EU's global presence:from the Russian-Georgian War to the 2009 Copenhagen Summit
This article surveys the way in which British print media have presented the European Union (EU)'s global presence in the international arena by analysing two case studies which reflect two very distinctive areas of EU foreign policy: global climate change policy and the policy towards Russia. It employs frame analysis, allowing for the identification of the way in which the discourse of the press was categorized around a series of central opinions and ideas. Frames underscore the connections made by journalists between different events, policies or phenomena and their possible interpretations. The analysis highlights that acting through the common framework of the EU rather than unilaterally was a strategy preferred by the British press. These findings are in stark contrast with the deep Euroscepticism which characterizes press attitudes towards most policy areas, and is often considered to be rooted in the British political culture, media system, public opinion or the longstanding tradition of viewing the European continent as the other
Ectopic Cushing' syndrome caused by a neuroendocrine carcinoma of the mesentery
BACKGROUND: ACTH overproduction within the pituitary gland or ectopically leads to hypercortisolism. Here, we report the first case of Cushing' syndrome caused by an ectopic ACTH-secreting neuroendocrine carcinoma of the mesentery. Moreover, diagnostic procedures and pitfalls associated with ectopic ACTH-secreting tumors are demonstrated and discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41 year-old man presented with clinical features and biochemical tests suggestive of ectopic Cushing's syndrome. First, subtotal thyroidectomy was performed without remission of hypercortisolism, because an octreotide scan showed increased activity in the left thyroid gland and an ultrasound revealed nodules in both thyroid lobes one of which was autonomous. In addition, the patient had a 3 mm hypoenhancing lesion of the neurohypophysis and a 1 cm large adrenal tumor. Surgical removal of the pituitary lesion within the posterior lobe did not improve hypercortisolism and we continued to treat the patient with metyrapone to block cortisol production. At 18-months follow-up from initial presentation, we detected an ACTH-producing neuroendocrine carcinoma of the mesentery by using a combination of octreotide scan, computed tomography scan, and positron emission tomography. Intraoperatively, use of a gamma probe after administration of radiolabeled (111)In-pentetreotide helped identify the mesenteric neuroendocrine tumor. After removal of this carcinoma, the patient improved clinically. Laboratory testing confirmed remission of hypercortisolism. An octreotide scan 7 months after surgery showed normal results. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the diagnostic challenge in identifying an ectopic ACTH-producing tumor and the pluripotency of cells, in this case of mesenteric cells that can start producing and secreting ACTH. It thereby helps elucidate the pathogenesis of neuroendocrine tumors. This case also suggests that patients with ectopic Cushing's syndrome and an octreotide scan positive in atypical locations may benefit from explorative radioguided surgery using (111)In-pentetreotide and a gamma probe
Advances in modelling of biomimetic fluid flow at different scales
The biomimetic flow at different scales has been discussed at length. The need of looking into the biological surfaces and morphologies and both geometrical and physical similarities to imitate the technological products and processes has been emphasized. The complex fluid flow and heat transfer problems, the fluid-interface and the physics involved at multiscale and macro-, meso-, micro- and nano-scales have been discussed. The flow and heat transfer simulation is done by various CFD solvers including Navier-Stokes and energy equations, lattice Boltzmann method and molecular dynamics method.
