Microplastic pollution has attracted mounting concerns worldwide. Microplastics may concentrate organic and metallic contaminants; thus, affecting their transport, fate and organismal exposure. To better understand organic contaminant-microplastic interactions, our study explored the sorption of selected polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), α-hexabromocyclododecane (α-HBCDD), and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) microplastics under saline conditions. Sorption isotherms determined varied between chemicals and between HDPE and PVC microplastics. Log Freundlich sorption coefficients (Log KF) for the targeted chemicals ranged from 2.01 to 5.27 L kg-1 for HDPE, but were significantly lower for PVC, i.e., ranging from Log KF data (2.84 – 8.58 L kg-1). Significant correlations between chemicals’ Log KF and Log Kow (octanol-water partition coefficient) indicate that chemical-dependent sorption was largely influenced by their hydrophobicity. Sorption was evaluated using three size classes (\u3c 53, 53 – 300, and 300 – 1000 µm) of lab-fragmented microplastics. Particle size did not significantly affect sorption isotherms, but influenced the time to reach equilibrium and the predicted maximum sorption, likely related to microplastic surface areas. The presence of biofilms on HDPE particles significantly enhanced contaminant sorption capacity, indicating more complex sorption dynamics in the chemical-biofilm-microplastic system. Our findings offer new insights into the chemical-microplastic interactions in marine environment

The engineering way from spoof surface plasmon polaritons to radiations

Get PDF
In recent years, spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been investigated at microwave and THz frequencies for engineering purpose. Due to momentum mismatch, the SPP mode cannot be directly converted from the spatial mode, and vice versa. Stimulating schemes have been developed to transform spatial waveguide modes to SPP modes with high efficiency. On the other hand, the question may arise that, is it possible to transform the propagating SPP waves to directive radiating waves for wireless communication? In view of this, this paper introduces the new-concept antennas based on spoof SPPs at microwave frequencies. Methods of transforming SPP modes to radiating modes are studied, whilst a series of antenna designs are presented and discussed. Feeding networks for antenna arrays using SSPP TLs are also investigated. Most works reviewed in this paper are fulfilled at Southeast University in China

Magnetic Field Based Wireless GMD/EMP-E3 Impact Monitoring Device:

A system and methods for monitoring an impact of geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) or an E3 component of electromagnetic pulses (EMP-E3), involving a transducer generating a transduced signal in response to a magnetic field of a current carrying element of a transmission line. The transduced signal reflects harmonic characteristics of the current carrying element, and is amplified and filtered, then digitally converted. Excessive impact is detected when a threshold condition is met with respect to a total harmonic distortion (THD) and/or a change in THD. The THD can be calculated from amplitudes of harmonic components of interest. The amplitudes can be calculated in various ways, including Fourier transforming the digital signal to locate peaks in the resulting spectral lines, or using a phase sensitive detection algorithm in which the digital signal is multiplied by a phase swept reference signal and then integrated

ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate and compare the efficacy and safety of retinal laser photocoagulation (PRP) alone, PRP with aflibercept 3+PRN, and PRP with aflibercept 5+PRN in patients with both high-risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and diabetic macular edema (DME).MethodsOverall, 170 patients with high-risk PDR and DME (170 eyes from 170 patients) who visited our ophthalmology clinic from December 2018 to December 2020 were divided into the PRP (n=58), aflibercept 5+PRN with PRP (n=53), and aflibercept 3+PRN with PRP (n= 59) groups. General information, such as age, sex, and eye category, was obtained. Moreover, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), baseline central macular foveal thickness (CFT), microaneurysm (MA), area of neovascularization (NV), area of hard exudate (HE), and cytokine levels in atrial fluid before and after treatment, were assessed. The χ2 test was used for comparison between groups for statistical data. Analysis of variance was used for the statistical description of measurement data, independent samples were analyzed using Student’s t-test, and Student–Newman–Keuls test was used for group comparisons. Differences were considered statistically significant at P < 0.05.ResultsAfter treatment, no significant improvement in the BCVA (logMAR) of patients in the PRP group was observed. The BCVA (log MAR) decreased from 0.72 ± 0.17 and 0.74 ± 0.17 to 0.50 ± 0.13 and 0.53 ± 0.17 in PRP with aflibercept 5+PRN and PRP with aflibercept 3+PRN groups, respectively, with a statistically significant difference compared to those in the PRP group (P<0.05 in all cases). However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the combined treatment groups (P>0.05). The CFT in the PRP-only group decreased slightly from 361.80 ± 36.70 μm to 353.86 ± 40.88 μm, with no statistically significant difference (P>0.05), whereas the CFT in the aflibercept 5+PRN with PRP and aflibercept 3+PRN with PRP groups decreased from 356.57 ± 37.57 μm and 358.17 ± 44.66 μm to 284.87 ± 31.52 μm and 303.19 ± 37.00 μm, respectively, with statistically significant differences before and after treatment (P<0.05 for both groups). Statistically significant differences were observed in CFT between the three groups after treatment (P<0.05 in all cases). The number of MA (pcs) in the PRP, aflibercept 5+PRN with PRP, and aflibercept 3+PRN with PRP groups decreased from 118.34 ± 27.96, 118.60 ± 33.34, and 116.59 ± 28.95 to 92.95 ± 29.04, 44.60 ± 20.73, and 54.26 ± 25.43, respectively. The two-way comparison of the three groups revealed statistically significant differences in MA (P<0.05 in all cases). In the three groups, NV decreased from 1.00 ± 0.21 mm², 1.01 ± 0.18 mm², and 0.98 ± 0.20 mm² before treatment to 0.49 ± 0.17 mm², 0.31 ± 0.16 mm², and 0.38 ± 0.14 mm², respectively, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05 in all cases). After 12 months of treatment, 13, 18, and 18 patients had reduced HE area in the PRP-only, aflibercept 5+PRN with PRP, and aflibercept 3+PRN with PRP groups, respectively, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05 in all cases). After 12 months of treatment, vascular endothelial growth factor, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and glial fibrilliary acidic protein levels (pg/mL) in the aqueous humor decreased in both combined treatment groups compared with that at baseline, with statistically significant differences; however, no significant difference was observed between the two combined treatment groups (P>0.05).ConclusionAflibercept 5+PRN combined with PRP was safe and effective in treating patients with high-risk PDR and DME, and was more effective than PRP-only and aflibercept 3+PRN with PRP in improving CFT and MA

The health threats posed by climate change in China are increasing rapidly. Each province faces different health risks. Without a timely and adequate response, climate change will impact lives and livelihoods at an accelerated rate and even prevent the achievement of the Healthy and Beautiful China initiatives. The 2021 China Report of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change is the first annual update of China’s Report of the Lancet Countdown. It comprehensively assesses the impact of climate change on the health of Chinese households and the measures China has taken. Invited by the Lancet committee, Tsinghua University led the writing of the report and cooperated with 25 relevant institutions in and outside of China. The report includes 25 indicators within five major areas (climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerability; adaptation, planning, and resilience for health; mitigation actions and health co-benefits; economics and finance; and public and political engagement) and a policy brief. This 2021 China policy brief contains the most urgent and relevant indicators focusing on provincial data: The increasing health risks of climate change in China; mixed progress in responding to climate change. In 2020, the heatwave exposures per person in China increased by 4.51 d compared with the 1986–2005 average, resulting in an estimated 92% increase in heatwave-related deaths. The resulting economic cost of the estimated 14500 heatwave-related deaths in 2020 is US$176 million. Increased temperatures also caused a potential 31.5 billion h in lost work time in 2020, which is equivalent to 1.3% of the work hours of the total national workforce, with resulting economic losses estimated at 1.4% of China’s annual gross domestic product. For adaptation efforts, there has been steady progress in local adaptation planning and assessment in 2020, urban green space growth in 2020, and health emergency management in 2019. 12 of 30 provinces reported that they have completed, or were developing, provincial health adaptation plans. Urban green space, which is an important heat adaptation measure, has increased in 18 of 31 provinces in the past decade, and the capacity of China’s health emergency management increased in almost all provinces from 2018 to 2019. As a result of China’s persistent efforts to clean its energy structure and control air pollution, the premature deaths due to exposure to ambient particulate matter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) and the resulting costs continue to decline. However, 98% of China’s cities still have annual average PM2.5 concentrations that are more than the WHO guideline standard of 10 μg/m3. It provides policymakers and the public with up-to-date information on China’s response to climate change and improvements in health outcomes and makes the following policy recommendations. (1) Promote systematic thinking in the related departments and strengthen multi-departmental cooperation. Sectors related to climate and development in China should incorporate health perspectives into their policymaking and actions, demonstrating WHO’s and President Xi Jinping’s so-called health-in-all-policies principle. (2) Include clear goals and timelines for climate-related health impact assessments and health adaptation plans at both the national and the regional levels in the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for 2035. (3) Strengthen China’s climate mitigation actions and ensure that health is included in China’s pathway to carbon neutrality. By promoting investments in zero-carbon technologies and reducing fossil fuel subsidies, the current rebounding trend in carbon emissions will be reversed and lead to a healthy, low-carbon future. (4) Increase awareness of the linkages between climate change and health at all levels. Health professionals, the academic community, and traditional and new media should raise the awareness of the public and policymakers on the important linkages between climate change and health.</p

A Compact Component for Multi-Band Rejection and Frequency Coding in the Plasmonic Circuit at Microwave Frequencies

No full text
Plasmonic circuits, which support the propagation of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) at microwave frequencies, have been developed in recent years as an expected candidate for future highly integrated systems, mainly because of their extraordinary field confinements and sub-wavelength resolution. On the other hand, artificial electromagnetic (EM) resonators are widely adopted in metamaterial design for flexible resonance and band gaps. In this work, an electrically small complementary spiral, which is made up of six helix branches sculptured in the ground, is proposed to achieve independent resonances at six different frequency bands. Combined with the grounded corrugated transmission line (TL), the proposed component can provide designable multi-band rejection, and compose frequency coding circuits with a compact size (less than λ0/4). The complementary spirals excited with the bending TL and the straight one are both investigated, and independence band rejections and designed 6-bit coding sequences in the frequency spectrum are demonstrated numerically and experimentally. Hence, it is concluded that such compact components can be adopted to flexibly control the rejection of waves in multi-frequency bands, and benefits the development of frequency-identification circuits and systems
