A Wire Position Monitor System for the 1.3 GHZ Tesla-Style Cryomodule at the Fermilab New-Muon-Lab Accelerator
The first cryomodule for the beam test facility at the Fermilab New-Muon-Lab
building is currently under RF commissioning. Among other diagnostics systems,
the transverse position of the helium gas return pipe with the connected 1.3
GHz SRF accelerating cavities is measured along the ~15 m long module using a
stretched-wire position monitoring system. An overview of the wire position
monitor system technology is given, along with preliminary results taken at the
initial module cool down, and during further testing. As the measurement system
offers a high resolution, we also discuss options for use as a vibration
detector.Comment: 4 pp. 15th International Conference on RF Superconductivity

Measuring conditions for second order X-ray Bragg-spectrometry
The KL2,3 (α)1,2-lines of 19K, the L3M4,5 (α)1,2-lines of 48Cd, and the M5N6,7 (α)1,2-lines of 92U are lines of comparable energy in the region of approximately 3 keV. In none of these cases were we able to resolve the three doublets when recording the spectra in first order Bragg spectrometry using a PET crystal as the dispersing element. For the purpose of enhancing the resolving power of the spectrometer, the three α spectra were recorded in second order reflection, thereby transferring the lines into another spectral region dominated by X-ray quanta of half the energy. In order to achieve high net peak intensities as well as a high peak-to-background ratio and, consequently, a high level of detection capability, the discriminator settings should be optimized quite carefully. In this manner, we were able to resolve the three α doublets and estimate α2/α1 intensity ratios. Inexplicably, current monographs, e.g., by Goldstein et al, do not contain any indications about the rational use of high order spectrometry. Only a few rather old monographs contain some hints in this regard
High Resolution BPM Upgrade for the ATF Damping Ring at KEK
A beam position monitor (BPM) upgrade at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility
(ATF) damping ring has been accomplished, carried out by a KEK/FNAL/SLAC
collaboration under the umbrella of the global ILC R&D effort. The upgrade
consists of a high resolution, high reproducibility read-out system, based on
analog and processing, and also implements a new automatic gain error
correction schema. The technical concept and realization as well as results of
beam studies are presented.Comment: 3 pp. 10th European Workshop on Beam Diagnostics and Instrumentation

Progress with PXIE MEBT Chopper
A capability to provide a large variety of bunch patterns is crucial for the
concept of the Project X serving MW-range beam to several experiments
simultaneously. This capability will be realized by the Medium Energy Beam
Transport's (MEBT) chopping system that will divert 80% of all bunches of the
initially 5mA, 2.1 MeV CW 162.5 MHz beam to an absorber according to a
pre-programmed bunch-by-bunch selection. Being considered one of the most
challenging components, the chopping system will be tested at the Project X
Injector Experiment (PXIE) facility that will be built at Fermilab as a
prototype of the Project X front end. The bunch deflection will be made by two
identical sets of travelling-wave kickers working in sync. Currently, two
versions of the kickers are being investigated: a helical 200 Ohm structure
with a switching-type 500 V driver and a planar 50 Ohm structure with a linear
250 V amplifier. This paper will describe the chopping system scheme and
functional specifications for the kickers, present results of electromagnetic
measurements of the models, discuss possible driver schemes, and show a
conceptual mechanical design.Comment: 3 pp. 3rd International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC 2012)

Preliminary calibration of a generic scramjet combustor
The results of a preliminary investigation of the combustion of hydrogen fuel at hypersonic flow conditions are provided. The tests were performed in a generic, constant-area combustor model with test gas supplied by a free-piston-driven reflected-shock tunnel. Static pressure measurements along the combustor wall indicated that burning did occur for combustor inlet conditions of P(static) approximately equal to 19kPa, T(static) approximately equal to 1080 K, and U approximately equal to 3630 m/s with a fuel equivalence ratio approximately equal to 0.9. These inlet conditions were obtained by operating the tunnel with stagnation enthalpy approximately equal to 8.1 MJ/kg, stagnation pressure approximately equal to 52 MPa, and a contoured nozzle with a nominal exit Mach number of 5.5
The future of sovereignty in multilevel governance Europe: a constructivist reading
Multilevel governance presents a depiction of contemporary structures in EU Europe as consisting of overlapping authorities and competing competencies. By focusing on emerging non-anarchical structures in the international system, hence moving beyond the conventional hierarchy/anarchy dichotomy to distinguish domestic and international arenas, this seems a radical transformation of the familiar Westphalian system and to undermine state sovereignty. Paradoxically, however, the principle of sovereignty proves to be resilient despite its alleged empirical decline. This article argues that social constructivism can explain the paradox, by considering sovereign statehood as a process-dependent institutional fact, and by showing that multilevel governance can feed into this process
