    Q-enhanced fold-and-bond MEMS inductors

    This work presents a novel coil fabrication technology to enhance quality factor (Q factor) of microfabricated inductors for implanted medical wireless sensing and data/power transfer applications. Using parylene as a flexible thin-film device substrate, a post-microfabrication substrate folding-and-bonding method is developed to effectively increase the metal thickness of the surface-micromachined inductors, resulting in their lower self-resistance so their higher quality factor. One-fold-and-bond coils are successfully demonstrated as an example to verify the feasibility of the fabrication technology with measurement results in good agreements with device simulation. Depending on target specifications, multiple substrate folding-and-bonding can be extensively implemented to facilitate further improved electrical characteristics of the coils from single fabrication batch. Such Q-enhanced inductors can be broadly utilized with great potentials in flexible integrated wireless devices/systems for intraocular prostheses and other biomedical implants

    Early-cleavage is a reliable predictor for embryo implantation in the GnRH agonist protocols but not in the GnRH antagonist protocols

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To test if early-cleavage was a strong predictor of pregnancy in patients receiving either a GnRH agonist long protocol or a GnRH antagonist protocol for in-vitro fertilization treatment (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This retrospective study included 534 patients undergoing a fresh cycle of oocyte retrieval and the day-3 embryo transfer (from 22 to 46 years old). Of the 534 patients treated, 331 received a GnRH agonist long stimulation protocol (GnRH agonist group) for ovarian stimulation and 203 patients received a GnRH antagonist protocol (GnRH antagonist group). In each group, patients who had at least one early-cleavage embryo transferred were designated as the 'early-cleavage' subgroup. Patients who had no early-cleavage embryos transferred were designated as the 'late-cleavage' subgroup.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The early cleavage rate was significantly lower in the GnRH antagonist group compared with that in the GnRH agonist group (IVF cycles: 34% versus 20%; ICSI cycles: 50% versus 37.8%, respectively, P < 0.0001). In the GnRH agonist group, the pregnancy rates were significantly higher in the early-cleavage subgroup than those in the late-cleavage subgroup (53.7% vs 33.9%, <it>P </it>< 0.0001). In the GnRH antagonist group, the pregnancy rates were not significantly different between the early-cleavage and late-cleavage subgroups (45.9% vs 43.8%, P > 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Early cleavage of zygote is not a reliable predictor for embryo implantation potential in using the GnRH antagonist protocol. Furthermore, the implantation rates between the GnRH agonist and GnRH antagonist groups were comparable.</p

    Comprehensive molecular expression profiling of SARS-CoV-associated factors in the endometrium across the menstrual cycle and elevated susceptibility in women with recurrent pregnancy loss

    Objective: To evaluate the dynamic expression profiling alterations of SARS-CoV-2-associated molecules within the fertile human endometrium throughout the menstrual cycle. Furthermore, to explore the inherent vulnerability of the endometrium to SARS-CoV-2 infection among women experiencing recurrent pregnancy failure, including both recurrent implantation failures (RIF) and recurrent pregnancy losses (RPL).Method: The present study employed multiple datasets to investigate the expression patterns of SARS-CoV-2-associated genes. Firstly, a single-cell RNA-sequencing dataset comprising endometrial samples from 19 healthy women across the menstrual cycle was utilized. Additionally, two microarray datasets encompassing 24 women with RIF, and 24 women with RPL during the peri-implantation phase were included. To complement these analyses, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was performed on endometrial samples collected from 30 women with RIF, 30 women with RPL, and 20 fertile controls recruited specifically during the implantation period.Results: The investigation revealed a moderate expression percentage of CTSL (22%), TMPRSS4 (15%), FURIN (16%) and MX1 (9%) in endometrium. Conversely, the expression percentages of ACE2 (1%) and TMPRSS2 (4%) were relatively low. Notably, the expression of BSG exhibited an increment towards the window of implantation, reaching its peak during the middle secretary phase. Furthermore, a significant reduction (p &lt; 0.05) in TMPRSS2 expression was observed in the RIF group compared to the control group. While the expression of BSG was significantly increased (p &lt; 0.05) in the RPL group, findings that were corroborated by the IHC staining results.Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate a noteworthy upregulation of BSG expression in the endometrium of women with RPL. These results suggest an augmented susceptibility of endometrium to SARS-CoV-2 infection, potentially contributing to unfavorable pregnancy outcomes

    Two new species of Chilopoda from Yunnan Province, China, are described as new: Tygarrup daliensis sp. nov. (Geophilomorpha, Mecistocephalidae) and Australobius cangshanensis sp. nov. (Lithobiomorpha, Lithobiidae). Tygarrup daliensis sp. nov. differs from other Tygarrup species by its each side of clypeal plagula with up to 15 se-tae, arranged in three irregular rows; labral posterior ala rough, with about 10 longitudinal slanting stripes near to mid-piece tooth; mandible with 9 pectinate dentate lamellae, 1st mandibular pectinate lamella bearing 6 teeth; each coxopleuron of last leg-bearing segments with about 50 pores of various size. Australobius cangshanensis sp. nov. is distinguished from congeners by a row of about 60 short setae transversely on each posterior part of 6th and 7th sternites; forcipular coxosternite with 7–10 coxosternal teeth, and porodonts between 5th and 6th or between 4th and 5th innermost teeth

    Heart Failure Direct Renin Inhibitor Attenuates Left Ventricular Remodeling in Post-Myocardial Infarction Heart Failure Mice

    Background: The role of direct renin inhibitors in myocardial ischemia-induced heart failure is controversial. We hypothesized that direct renin inhibitors play a positive role, affecting in vivo myocardial function as well as in vitro extracellular matrix change. Methods: Ten-week-old C57BL/6J male mice with 2-kidney 1-clip (2K1C) model were enrolled in this study. The mice were divided into 3 groups each with 18 mice; group 1 sham-operated, group 2 coronary artery ligationinduced heart failure, and group 3 coronary artery ligation-induced heart failure receiving aliskiren minipump infusion. These mice were assessed for systemic hemodynamics and left ventricular function by 2-dimensional echocardiography (iE33, Philips). Myocardial tissue was stained and crude protein was isolated from the nonischemic viable left ventricle. Myocardial tissue contents of anti-angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 were examined. Results: There were 54 mice that received 2K1C and were followed up for three weeks. Baseline characteristics showed no difference. At follow-up, the heart failure-only group had greater left ventricular mass and worse systolic function as compared to the sham group. Whereas the heart failure-aliskiren group had lower left ventricle mass and better systolic function as compared to the heart failure-only group. AT1 receptor, MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels were increased in the heart failure-only model while direct renin inhibitor attenuated this significantly. Conclusions: Direct renin inhibitors improved myocardial function in a myocardial ischemia-induced heart failure mouse model. The improvement seen is present in myocardial mass, left ventricular systolic function and also in myocardial interstitial tissue

    The investigation based on the vigorous tourism industry and open up the gaming industry in the future to promote and construct the nation competition strength in Taiwan. Tourism destination image is an important factor which tourist chooses and plans their tourism schedule. But the concept of image includes inner psychology motivation, external environment factor or these two factors interaction to develop and integrate model. Therefore, this investigation aimed to construct the destination image formation model of Macao and take the Taiwan visitors to Macao for example. According to the findings, Taiwan tourists who actually visited Macao generally report positive tourist image in overall. Furthermore, the overall image of tourists visiting Macao can be enhanced if consumers’ return on investment and service superiority are conducted through experiential value perspective in terms of value/environment variables of Taiwan tourists’ perception or cognition perspective. Finally, a tourism image of Macao perceived by Taiwan tourists is built upon an experience in integrated industry surrounded by luxury atmosphere. To feel about the casino culture of mirage among Asian cities, and a national image of sense and sensibility after combining Eastern and Western culture are primary tourism motives of the study

    Periodic elastic nanodomains in ultrathin tetrogonal-like BiFeO3 films

    We present a synchrotron grazing incidence x-ray diffraction analysis of the domain structure and polar symmetry of highly strained BiFeO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 substrate. We revealed the existence of periodic elastic nanodomains in the pure tetragonal-like BFO ultrathin films down to a thickness of 6 nm. A unique shear strain accommodation mechanism is disclosed. We further demonstrated that the periodicity of the nanodomains increases with film thickness but deviates from the classical Kittel's square root law in ultrathin thickness regime (6 - 30 nm). Temperature-dependent experiments also reveal the disappearance of periodic modulation above 90C due to a MC-MA structural phase transition.Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev.

    Improving Success Rates of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for Chronic Total Occlusion at a Rural Hospital in East Taiwan

    SummaryBackgroundWe aimed to report the results of percutaneous coronary intervention for chronic total occlusion (CTO) in a remote hospital of southeast Taiwan that does not have on-site coronary artery bypass graft support and has insufficient medical resources.MethodsFrom 2006 to 2009, we identified 96 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention and whose coronary angiogram showed CTO lesions. On-site cardiovascular surgeons were unavailable from 2006 to 2009.ResultsThe success rate (test for trend, p = 0.02) and numbers of guidewires used (test for trend, p = 0.59) significantly increased from 2006 to 2009, and the procedural time reduced significantly (test for trend, p = 0.001). The volume of contrast media injected decreased, although this result was not statistically significant (p = 0.70).ConclusionOur experience in managing CTO lesions substantially improved and the procedural time reduced over 4 years, even when constrained by a relative shortage of medical resources

    Clonal spread of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in eastern Taiwan

    Background and PurposeThis study was conducted to investigate the molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii to three types of antibiotics.MethodsOne hundred and thirty-four specimens of MDR A baumannii were collected from three branches (Taipei, Dalin, and Hualien branches) of Buddhist Tzu Chi Hospital, which are located in northern, southern, and eastern Taiwan, during 2007. Genotyping was performed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Antibiotic susceptibilities to colistin, rifampicin, and tigecycline were determined. The synergistic effects of rifampin and colistin were also evaluated.ResultsAntibiotic susceptibility testing showed that 10.4%, 47.8% and 45.5% of the MDR A baumannii isolates are resistant to colistin, rifampicin, and tigecycline, respectively. A majority of the rifampicin-resistant isolates (62.7%) were found in the Haulien branch, whereas 62.2% of tigecycline-resistant isolates were found in the Taipei branch. The combination of colistin and rifampicin had a synergistic effect on all of the isolates. Genotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis identified 17, 23, and 11 pulsotypes in the Taipei, Dalin, and Haulien branches, respectively. Furthermore, 74.5% of isolates in the Haulien branch were identified as one of three pulsotypes. Among 37 rifampicin-resistant and 22 tigecycline-resistant MDR A baumannii isolates found in the Haulien branch, 51.3% (19/37) and 50% (11/22) of the isolates belonged to the same clone, respectively.ConclusionThis study confirms the high prevalence of resistance to rifampicin and tigecycline in MDR A baumannii in the three hospitals that were studied, and the high proportion of identical strains that exist in eastern Taiwan
