    Development and Pilot Test of a Chinese Medicine as Longevity Modality (CALM) Videos in Improving Hypertension Management in Chinese Immigrants: Feasibility of Educational and Storytelling Video

    Currently, there are minimal educational materials customized for first-generation Chinese immigrants on hypertension management. The San Francisco Bay area has an increasingly large population of first-generation Chinese immigrants. Thus, the need for culturally sensitive and appropriate educational materials is critical for this vulnerable population to manage their hypertension. The aim of this study was to update and test the feasibility of the Chinese Medicine as Longevity Modality (CALM) DVD videos, including: 1) a patient education program using a Powerpoint file, conveyed via a video format; and 2) a storytelling video. The feasibility of the CALM videos was assessed by individual interviews using structured, open-ended questions to determine the participants’ comprehension of the video content and offering feedback and suggestions for the refinement of the videos. Findings generally demonstrated helpfulness of the proposed intervention protocol suggesting that educational materials that are culturally sensitive and appropriate are beneficial for the target population

    Ameliorative effect of Draba nemorosa extract on chronic heart failure in rats

    Purpose: To evaluate the effect of Draba nemorosa extract (DNE) on oxidative stress and hemodynamics in rats with chronic congestive heart failure (CHF).Methods: Adriamycin was used to establish CHF in Sprague Dawley (SD) rat model. Six groups of SD rats were used in this study: control group, CHF group, captopril group (0.1 g/kg), as well as high-, medium- and low-dose DNE groups (5.2, 2.6 and 1.3 g/kg, respectively). Treatment for all groups lasted 4 weeks. Blood pressure and heart index were measured. In addition, serum creatine kinase (CK), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) were determined with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits.Results: In the CHF group, arterial systolic pressure (SBP, 84.22 ± 16.23 mmHg); diastolic pressure (DBP, 77.36 ± 20.29 mmHg); mean arterial pressure (MAP, 78.45 ± 10.56 mmHg); heart rate (HR, 357.18 ± 37.34 beats/min) and left ventricular systolic peak (LVSP, 102.34 ± 16.37 mmHg) were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) when compared with the control group. However, left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP, 23.38 ± 1.78 mmHg); heart index (2.74 ± 0.16 mg/g); serum CK (0.87 ± 0.15 U/mL); MDA (19.34 ± 2.57 nmol/mL), NO (38.43 ± 3.32 umol/L) and NOS (42.65 ± 3.32 U/mL) were increased. Treatment with high-dose DNE significantly ameliorated hemodynamic function, and reduced MDA (9.13 ± 2.12 nmol/mL) and NO (22.37 ± 3.16 umol/L) levels (p < 0.05). High-dose DNE also led to significant decreases in CK (0.53 ± 0.35 U/mL) and NOS (24.27 ± 3.55U/mL) in the CHF rats (p < 0.05).Conclusion: DNE significantly improves hemodynamic function in CHF rats. Thus, it has a potential for development into a new drug for clinical treatment of CHF.Keywords: Draba nemorosa, Adriamycin, Chronic heart failure, Hemodynamic function, Oxidative stres

    Tailoring excitonic states of van der Waals bilayers through stacking configuration, band alignment and valley-spin

    Excitons in monolayer semiconductors have large optical transition dipole for strong coupling with light field. Interlayer excitons in heterobilayers, with layer separation of electron and hole components, feature large electric dipole that enables strong coupling with electric field and exciton-exciton interaction, at the cost that the optical dipole is substantially quenched (by several orders of magnitude). In this letter, we demonstrate the ability to create a new class of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero- and homo-bilayers that combines the advantages of monolayer- and interlayer-excitons, i.e. featuring both large optical dipole and large electric dipole. These excitons consist of an electron that is well confined in an individual layer, and a hole that is well extended in both layers, realized here through the carrier-species specific layer-hybridization controlled through the interplay of rotational, translational, band offset, and valley-spin degrees of freedom. We observe different species of such layer-hybridized valley excitons in different heterobilayer and homobilayer systems, which can be utilized for realizing strongly interacting excitonic/polaritonic gases, as well as optical quantum coherent controls of bidirectional interlayer carrier transfer either with upper conversion or down conversion in energy

    Insula Volume and Salience Network Are Associated with Memory Decline in Parkinson Disease: Complementary Analyses of Voxel-Based Morphometry versus Volume of Interest

    Objective. We investigated structural brain change in subjects with a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson disease with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) and examined its relationship with memory impairment. Methods. Twenty-three PD-MCI patients were enrolled and underwent cognitive evaluation and 3-dimensional T1-weighted imaging. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to assess brain-behavior correlations and examine the relationship between insula and memory score. VOI methods replicated results obtained from VBM. Results. VBM uncovered the notion that memory scores were positively correlated with the gray matter (GM) density in the insular cortex and a significant positive correlation between overall cognitive performance and concentration of GM within the lateral temporal cortex. In VOI analyses, our results suggested a positive correlation between the insula and composite free-recall verbal memory (ρ=0.617, P=0.003) and the delayed free-recall verbal memory subdomain (ρ=0.725, P<0.001). Furthermore, we found a positive correlation between the insula and caudate (σ=0.570, P=0.006) and putamen volume (σ=0.683, P<0.001). Conclusions. In patients with PD-MCI, atrophic changes in the insula may be related to memory deficits, and the brain-behavior correlation may be associated with atrophic change in the striatum within the salience network
