    Robust recursive bi-iteration singular value decomposition (SVD) for subspace tracking and adaptive filtering

Unfortunately, its performance under impulse noise environment degrades substantially. In this paper, a new robust-statistics-based bi-iteration SVD algorithm (robust Bi-SVD) is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm offers significantly improved robustness against impulse noise than the conventional Bi-SVD algorithm with slight increase in arithmetic complexity. For nominal Gaussian noise, the two algorithms have similar performance.published_or_final_versio

    A robust subspace tracking algorithm for subspace-based blind multiuser detection in impulsive noise

    Subspace tracking is an efficient method to reduce the complexity in estimating the signal subspace required in subspace-based multiuser detection algorithm. Recursive least square (RLS)-based subspace tracking algorithms such as the PAST algorithm can be used to estimate the signal subspace adaptively with relatively low computational complexity. However, it is shown in this paper that subspace estimation using conventional autocorrelation matrix is very sensitive to impulse noise. A new robust correlation matrix, based on robust statistics, is proposed to overcome this problem. Moreover, a new robust PAST algorithm is developed, again using robust statistics, for robust subspace tracking. A new restoring mechanism is also proposed to handle long bursts of impulses, which sporadically occur in communications systems. Simulation results show that the proposed robust subspace tracking-based blind multiuser detector performs better than the conventional approach, especially under consecutive impulses. The adaptation of the proposed scheme in a dynamic multiple access channel, where users may enter and exit the shared mobile channel, is also found to be satisfactory.published_or_final_versio

    Loss of the acetate switch in <i>Vibrio vulnificus</i> enhances predation defence against <i>Tetrahymena pyriformis</i>.

    Vibrio vulnificus is an opportunistic human pathogen and autochthonous inhabitant of coastal marine environments, where the bacterium is under constant predation by heterotrophic protists or protozoans. As a result of this selection pressure, genetic variants with anti-predation mechanisms are selected for and persist in the environment. Such natural variants may also be pathogenic to animal or human hosts, making it important to understand these defence mechanisms. To identify anti-predator strategies, thirteen V. vulnificus strains of different genotypes isolated from diverse environments were exposed to predation by the ciliated protozoan, Tetrahymena pyriformis, and only strain ENV1 was resistant to predation. Further investigation of the cell-free supernatant showed that ENV1 acidifies the environment by the excretion of organic acids, which is toxic to T. pyriformis. As this predation resistance was dependent on the availability of iron, transcriptomes of V. vulnificus in iron-replete and iron-deplete conditions were compared. This analysis revealed that ENV1 ferments pyruvate and the resultant acetyl-CoA leads to acetate synthesis under aerobic conditions, a hallmark of overflow metabolism. The anaerobic respiration global regulator, arcA, was upregulated when iron was available. An ΔarcA deletion mutant of ENV1 accumulated less acetate and importantly, was sensitive to grazing by T. pyriformis. Based on the transcriptome response and quantification of metabolites, we conclude that ENV1 has adapted to overflow metabolism and has lost a control switch that shifts metabolism from acetate excretion to acetate assimilation, enabling it to excrete acetate continuously. We show that overflow metabolism and the acetate switch contribute to prey-predator interactions. Importance Bacteria in the environment, including Vibrio spp., interact with protozoan predators. To defend against predation, bacteria evolve anti-predator mechanisms ranging from changing morphology, biofilm formation and secretion of toxins or virulence factors. Some of these adaptations may result in strains that are pathogenic to humans. Therefore, it is important to study predator defence strategies of environmental bacteria. V. vulnificus thrives in coastal waters and infects humans. Very little is know about the defence mechanisms V. vulnificus expresses against predation. Here we show that a V. vulnificus strain (ENV1) has rewired the central carbon metabolism enabling the production of excess organic acid that is toxic to the protozoan predator, T. pyriformis. This is a previously unknown mechanism of predation defence that protects against protozoan predators

    A multivariate random-parameters Tobit model for analyzing highway crash rates by injury severity

    In this study, a multivariate random-parameters Tobit model is proposed for the analysis of crash rates by injury severity. In the model, both correlation across injury severity and unobserved heterogeneity across road-segment observations are accommodated. The proposed model is compared with a multivariate (fixed-parameters) Tobit model in the Bayesian context, by using a crash dataset collected from the Traffic Information System of Hong Kong. The dataset contains crash, road geometric and traffic information on 224 directional road segments for a five-year period (2002–2006). The multivariate random-parameters Tobit model provides a much better fit than its fixed-parameters counterpart, according to the deviance information criteria and Bayesian R2, while it reveals a higher correlation between crash rates at different severity levels. The parameter estimates show that a few risk factors (bus stop, lane changing opportunity and lane width) have heterogeneous effects on crash-injury-severity rates. For the other factors, the variances of their random parameters are insignificant at the 95% credibility level, then the random parameters are set to be fixed across observations. Nevertheless, most of these fixed coefficients are estimated with higher precisions (i.e., smaller variances) in the random-parameters model. Thus, the random-parameters Tobit model, which provides a more comprehensive understanding of the factors’ effects on crash rates by injury severity, is superior to the multivariate Tobit model and should be considered a good alternative for traffic safety analysis

    Two-Way Minimization: A Novel Treatment Allocation Method for Small Trials

    Randomization is a hallmark of clinical trials. If a trial entails very few subjects and has many prognostic factors (or many factor levels) to be balanced, minimization is a more efficient method to achieve balance than a simple randomization. We propose a novel minimization method, the ‘two-way minimization’. The method separately calculates the ‘imbalance in the total numbers of subjects’ and the ‘imbalance in the distributions of prognostic factors’. And then to allocate a subject, it chooses—by probability—to minimize either one of these two aspects of imbalances. As such, it is a method that is both treatment-adaptive and covariate-adaptive. We perform Monte-Carlo simulations to examine its statistical properties. The two-way minimization (with proper regression adjustment of the force-balanced prognostic factors) has the correct type I error rates. It also produces point estimates that are unbiased and variance estimates that are accurate. When there are important prognostic factors to be balanced in the study, the method achieves the highest power and the smallest variance among randomization methods that are resistant to selection bias. The allocation can be done in real time and the subsequent data analysis is straightforward. The two-way minimization is recommended to balance prognostic factors in small trials

    Anyonic interferometry and protected memories in atomic spin lattices

    Strongly correlated quantum systems can exhibit exotic behavior called topological order which is characterized by non-local correlations that depend on the system topology. Such systems can exhibit remarkable phenomena such as quasi-particles with anyonic statistics and have been proposed as candidates for naturally fault-tolerant quantum computation. Despite these remarkable properties, anyons have never been observed in nature directly. Here we describe how to unambiguously detect and characterize such states in recently proposed spin lattice realizations using ultra-cold atoms or molecules trapped in an optical lattice. We propose an experimentally feasible technique to access non-local degrees of freedom by performing global operations on trapped spins mediated by an optical cavity mode. We show how to reliably read and write topologically protected quantum memory using an atomic or photonic qubit. Furthermore, our technique can be used to probe statistics and dynamics of anyonic excitations.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Synchronous fluorescence spectrofluorimetric method for the simultaneous determination of metoprolol and felodipine in combined pharmaceutical preparation

    A rapid, simple and sensitive synchronous specrtofluorimetric method has been developed for the simultaneous analysis of binary mixture of metoprolol (MTP) and felodipine (FDP). The method is based upon measurement of the synchronous fluorescence intensity of the two drugs at Δλ of 70 nm in aqueous solution. The different experimental parameters affecting the synchronous fluorescence intensities of the two drugs were carefully studied and optimized. The fluorescence intensity-concentration plots were rectilinear over the ranges of 0.5-10 μg/mL and 0.2-2 μg/mL for MTP and FDP, respectively. The limits of detection were 0.11 and 0.02 μg/mL and quantification limits were 0.32 and 0.06 μg/mL for MTP and FDP, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of the two compounds in their commercial tablets and the results obtained were favorably compared to those obtained with a comparison method

    Neurocognitive Changes among Elderly Exposed to PCBs/PCDFs in Taiwan

    BACKGROUND: In 1979 approximately 2,000 people were exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) due to ingestion of contaminated cooking oil in Taiwan. Although a previous study has shown delayed developmental milestones and poorer neurocognitive functioning in children born to exposed mothers, it is unclear whether neurocognitive functioning was impaired in people who were directly exposed to the PCBs and PDCFs. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare neurocognitive functioning in people exposed to PCBs and PCDFs with that of unexposed sex- and age-matched neighbors. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study among exposed and unexposed subjects >= 60 years of age using prospective outcome measurements. We evaluated neurocognitive tests including cognition, memory modalities, learning, motor and sensory function, mood, and daily activity. RESULTS: In total, 162 (59%) exposed and 151 (55%) reference subjects completed this study. In exposed men, all test results were similar to the reference group; however, exposed women had reduced functioning in attention and digit span (ADS), visual memory span (VMS), and verbal memory recalls (VMR ), especially learning ability. We also found a borderline reduction in the Mini-Mental State Examination. The digit symbol, motor, sensory, depression ( determined by the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form), and activity of daily life were not different between the exposed and reference groups. A significant dose-response relationship was found for VMR, ADS, and VMS. CONCLUSION: Our study showed dose-dependent neurocognitive deficits in certain aspects of attention, visual memory, and learning ability in women previously exposed to PCBs and PCDFs, but not in exposed men
