Gauge invariant generalization of the 2D chiral Gross-Neveu model

By means of the Lee-Shrock transformation we generalize the 2D Gross-Neveu (GN$_2$) model to a U(1) gauge theory with charged fermion and scalar fields in 2D ($\chi U \phi_2$ model). The $\chi U \phi_2$ model is equivalent to the GN$_2$ model at infinite gauge coupling. We show that the dynamical fermion mass generation and asymptotic freedom in the effective four-fermion coupling persist also when the gauge coupling decreases. These phenomena are not influenced by the XY$_2$ model phase transition at weak coupling. Methodiek Schoolverlatersinformatiesysteem 1997

Dit werkdocument gaat in op de methodiek die in het uitvoeringsjaar 1997 is gehanteerd binnen het schoolverlatersonderzoek, zoals dat door het ROA wordt uitgevoerd. Dit betreft de enquêtes Registratie van Uitstroom en Bestemming van Schoolverlaters (RUBS), HBO-Monitor en WO- Monitor. Sinds 1996 is het ROA-schoolverlatersonderzoek in vergaande mate geïntegreerd. Hierdoor is een vergelijkbaar systeem ontstaan met gegevens over schoolverlaters uit vrijwel het gehele secundair en tertiair onderwijs, vooralsnog met uitzondering van een groot gedeelte van het wetenschappelijk onderwijs. Vanaf volgend jaar maakt ook vrijwel het gehele wetenschappelijk onderwijs deel uit van dit schoolverlatersinformatiesysteem. In het kader van het onderzoek binnen dit informatiesysteem zijn in 1998 onder andere het rapport School verlaters tussen onderwijs en arbeidsmarkt 1997 en een bijbehorende bijlage Statistische bijlage gepubliceerd (ROA, 1998a en 1998b). Daarnaast is een specifieke rapportage ver schenen over de arbeidsmarktpositie van de afgestudeerden van het HBO (Allen en Ramae kers, 1998 en ROA/DESAN, 1998). Voor de lerarenopleiding is een aparte rapportage versche nen (Van der Linden en Van der Velden, 1998). Ook over de afgestudeerden van het kunstvakonderwijs verschijnt, begin 1999, een specifiek rapport. Tevens zijn de belangrijkste resultaten van de WO-Monitor Economie in een landelijke rapportage samengebracht (Van der Velden, Welters en Willems, 1998). In 1997 zijn in het kader van het schoolverlaters informatiesysteem enkele ‘pilot''-onderzoeken uitgevoerd. Dit betreft enquêtes onder school verlaters van de beroepsbegeleidende leerweg, ex-cursisten van het Voortgezet Algemeen Volwassenen Onderwijs (VAVO) en onder voortijdig schoolverlaters. Pilotstudie voortijdig schoolverlaters 1995/1996

Dit werkdocument doet verslag van het onderzoek onder voortijdig schoolverlaters van het Algemeen Voortgezet Onderwijs (AVO), het Voortgezet Beroepsonderwijs (VBO) en de Beroepsopleidende Leerweg (BOL niveaus 1 tot en met 4) uit het schooljaar 1995/1996. Doel van het onderzoek was om door middel van een pilot-studie de positie van deze groep schoolverlaters in het vervolgonderwijs en op de arbeidsmarkt in kaart te brengen en daar waar mogelijk een vergelijking te maken met de reguliere gediplomeerde schoolverlaters. Daarnaast is getracht om tot een duidelijke en hanteerbare definitie te komen van het begrip ''voortijdig schoolverlater . Het onderzoek is intern begeleid door dr. J. Allen en het verslag is geschreven door drs. T. Huijgen. Een eerste aanzet voor het werkdocument is gemaakt door drs. R. Welters. Het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) en het Researchcentrum voor Onderwijs en Arbeidsmarkt (ROA) publiceren jaarlijks, onafhankelijk van elkaar, gegevens over de werkloosheid onder schoolverlaters. Door verschillen in databronnen en methoden lopen de werkloosheidspercentages die door beide instituten worden gepresenteerd nogal uiteen. Dit werkdocument geeft inzicht in de oorzaken van de verschillen in het werkloos heidspercentage. Het werkdocument is samengesteld door het ROA in nauwe samen werking met het CBS. Determinantal Characterization of Canonical Curves and Combinatorial Theta Identities

We characterize genus g canonical curves by the vanishing of combinatorial products of g+1 determinants of Brill-Noether matrices. This also implies the characterization of canonical curves in terms of (g-2)(g-3)/2 theta identities. A remarkable mechanism, based on a basis of H^0(K_C) expressed in terms of Szego kernels, reduces such identities to a simple rank condition for matrices whose entries are logarithmic derivatives of theta functions. Such a basis, together with the Fay trisecant identity, also leads to the solution of the question of expressing the determinant of Brill-Noether matrices in terms of theta functions, without using the problematic Klein-Fay section sigma.Comment: 35 pages. The whole blood phagocytosis assay: a clinically relevant test of neutrophil function and dysfunction in community-acquired pneumonia.

ObjectiveTo refine and validate a neutrophil function assay with clinical relevance for patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).DesignTwo phase cross-sectional study to standardise and refine the assay in blood from healthy volunteers and test neutrophil phagocytic function in hospital patients with CAP.ParticipantsPhase one: Healthy adult volunteers (n = 30). Phase two: Critical care patients with severe CAP (n = 16), ward-level patients with moderate CAP (n = 15) and respiratory outpatients (no acute disease, n = 15).ResultsOur full standard operating procedure for the assay is provided. Patients with severe CAP had significantly decreased neutrophil function compared to moderate severity disease (median phagocytic index 2.8 vs. 18.0, p = 0.014). Moderate severity pneumonia neutrophil function was significantly higher than control samples (median 18.0 vs. 1.6, p = 0.015). There was no significant difference between critical care and control neutrophil function (median 2.8 vs. 1.6, p = 0.752).ConclusionsOur whole blood neutrophil assay is simple, reproducible and clinically relevant. Changes in neutrophil function measured in this pneumonia cohort is in agreement with previous studies. The assay has potential to be used to identify individuals for clinical trials of immunomodulatory therapies, to risk-stratify patients with pneumonia, and to refine our understanding of 'normal' neutrophil function in infection

Two-dimensional model of dynamical fermion mass generation in strongly coupled gauge theories

We generalize the $N_F=2$ Schwinger model on the lattice by adding a charged scalar field. In this so-called $\chi U\phi_2$ model the scalar field shields the fermion charge, and a neutral fermion, acquiring mass dynamically, is present in the spectrum. We study numerically the mass of this fermion at various large fixed values of the gauge coupling by varying the effective four-fermion coupling, and find an indication that its scaling behavior is the same as that of the fermion mass in the chiral Gross-Neveu model. This suggests that the $\chi U\phi_2$ model is in the same universality class as the Gross-Neveu model, and thus renormalizable and asymptotic free at arbitrary strong gauge coupling.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX2e, requires packages rotating.sty and curves.sty from CTA
