    Pragmatism as American Exceptionalism

    The history of American philosophical thought is marked by a skepticism of epistemology and immutable truths, which is drawn under the term pragmatism. This skepticism is the genesis for the political and social attitudes that makes the United States exceptional. This thesis argues that this exceptionalism is important to the makeup of the American character and that it is being threatened by two front: ideologically driven politics, and the abuse of power by the majority. In the course of writing this essay I evaluated a large portion of the body of American philosophy as well as political and judicial writers in order to show that American exceptionalism is based upon a philosophical rejection of epistemology and immutable truth claims and that exceptionalism is integral to the progress of America as a nation

    Tonal considerations in the selection of wall materials for open labial organ pipes

    Research into the tonal influence of the materials in which organ pipes are fabricated, far from clarifying the question, has contributed to the confusion. The results of experiments appear at variance with the practices of organ builders and the conclusions of different workers are often uncorroborative. Due to this, in literature aimed at musicians, the question of the tonal implications of materials is dealt with superficially and often reflects the prejudices of manufacture and players. This project aims to relate empirical understanding and analytical study, to demonstrate the tonal implications of Pipe-Metal - alloys of tin and lead - on organ pipe tone, and to investigate the possibilities of fabricating organ pipes in alternative materials. The work includes a survey of relevant literature about other wind instruments as well as the organ, from which aspects of the controversy which require further experimental work are identified. It also shows that the experimental approach should involve the analysis of onset transient and that physical analysis should be related to the auditory capacity of humans. A method of analysis, detail of the equipment designed and the criteria for relating analysis and physiology are presented in the text. [Continues.

    Mixed-mode multicore reliability

    Future processors are expected to observe increasing rates of hardware faults. Using Dual-Modular Redundancy (DMR), two cores of a multicore can be loosely coupled to redundantly execute a single software thread, providing very high coverage from many difference sources of faults. This reliability, however, comes at a high price in terms of per-thread IPC and overall system throughput. We make the observation that a user may want to run both applications requiring high reliability, such as financial software, and more fault tolerant applications requiring high performance, such as media or web software, on the same machine at the same time. Yet a traditional DMR system must fully operate in redundant mode whenever any application requires high reliability. This paper proposes a Mixed-Mode Multicore (MMM), which enables most applications, including the system software, to run with high reliability in DMR mode, while applications that need high performance can avoid the penalty of DMR. Though conceptually simple, two key challenges arise: 1) care must be taken to protect reliable applications from any faults occurring to applications running in high performance mode, and 2) the desire to execute additional independent software threads for a performance application complicates the scheduling of computation to cores. After solving these issues, an MMM is shown to improve overall system performance, compared to a traditional DMR system, by approximately 2X when one reliable and one performance application are concurrently executing

    Structural behaviour of copper chloride catalysts during the chlorination of CO to phosgene

    The interaction of CO with an attapulgite-supported Cu(II)Cl2 catalyst has been examined in a micro-reactor arrangement. CO exposure to the dried, as-received catalyst at elevated temperatures leads to the formation of CO2 as the only identifiable product. However, phosgene production can be induced by a catalyst pre-treatment where the supported Cu(II)Cl2 sample is exposed to a diluted stream of chlorine. Subsequent CO exposure at ~ 370°C then leads to phosgene production. In order to investigate the origins of this atypical set of reaction characteristics, a series of x-ray absorption experiments were performed that were supplemented by DFT calculations. XANES measurements establish that at the elevated temperatures connected with phosgene formation, the catalyst is comprised of Cu+ and a small amount of Cu2+. Moreover, the data show that unique to the chlorine pre-treated sample, CO exposure at elevated temperature results in a short-lived oxidation of the copper. On the basis of calculated CO adsorption energies, DFT calculations indicate that a mixed Cu+/Cu2+ catalyst is required to support CO chemisorption

    Mouse frontal cortex mediates additive multisensory decisions

    The brain can combine auditory and visual information to localize objects. However, the cortical substrates underlying audiovisual integration remain uncertain. Here, we show that mouse frontal cortex combines auditory and visual evidence; that this combination is additive, mirroring behavior; and that it evolves with learning. We trained mice in an audiovisual localization task. Inactivating frontal cortex impaired responses to either sensory modality, while inactivating visual or parietal cortex affected only visual stimuli. Recordings from >14,000 neurons indicated that after task learning, activity in the anterior part of frontal area MOs (secondary motor cortex) additively encodes visual and auditory signals, consistent with the mice's behavioral strategy. An accumulator model applied to these sensory representations reproduced the observed choices and reaction times. These results suggest that frontal cortex adapts through learning to combine evidence across sensory cortices, providing a signal that is transformed into a binary decision by a downstream accumulator

    Rural health policies over the past decade have been driven by the need to reduce health inequalities between metropolitan and rural Australia. These policies have concentrated on addressing workforce issues, targeting the medical workforce in particular. Little policy attention has focused specifically on the systematic development of sustainable comprehensive Primary Health Care (PHC) service models appropriate to rural and remote Australia. There is a need to know what model works best where, and why.The research reported in this paper is a project of the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute, which is supported by a grant from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing under the Primary Health Care Research, Evaluation and Development Strategy
