    Current records and meteorological records have been searched and interpreted to estimate some current related factors in the vicinity of Dam Neck, Virginia. The current data consists of approximately 30 day current meter records taken in summer 1973 and drogued buoy tracks recorded in autumn 1972. Estimated quantities include vector averaged current, maximum anticipated current associated with winter storms, tidal current ellipses, the seasons during which winter storms can be expected, and the keys to the end and beginning of the winter (stormy) season in any given year.     The Response of Estuarine Circulation to Local Wind Events

    An analysis of non-tidal estuarine circulation and local wind events was conducted employing wind and current records taken along the York River. Three distinct response conditions of non-tidal circulation to wind were observed. These conditions exhibited significant temporal and spatial variability. The first was typified by a positive two layer flow response to wind that was significant in the middle section of the York during the first six days of the study. The second exhibited a positive one layer flow response to wind that was significant in the upper section of the York during the last three days of the study, The third exhibited no statistically significant relation between current patterns and wind. This condition occurred near the mouth of the estuary, and it may indicate that the currents near the mouth respond more substantially to conditions in the adjacent· Chesapeake Bay than to those caused by local winds.https://scholarworks.wm.edu/vimsbooks/1032/thumbnail.jp

    Articulating Axial-Flow Turbomachinery Rotor Blade For Enabling Variable Speed Gas Turbine Engine

    Current technology gas turbine engines are generally optimized to operate at nearly a fixed speed with fixed blade geometries for the design operating condition. When the operating condition of the engine changes, the flow incidence angles may not be optimum with the blade geometries resulting in reduced off-design performance. But, if we have the capability of articulating the pitch angle of axial-flow compressor/turbine blades in coordination with adjustable stator vanes, it can improve performance by maintaining flow incidence angles within the optimum range for given blade geometries at all operating conditions. Maintaining flow incidence angles within the optimum range can prevent the likelihood of flow separation in the blade passage and also reduce the thermal stresses developed due to aerothermal loads for variable speed gas turbine applications. This paper discusses a recent invention of adaptable articulating axial-flow compressor or turbine rotor blade that can significantly impact developing a high efficiency variable speed gas turbine for rotorcraft or ground vehicles that may need to operate optimally at different torque/speed conditions during various maneuvers. U.S. Army Research Laboratory has partnered with University of California San Diego and Iowa State University Collaborators to conduct high fidelity stator-rotor interaction analysis for evaluating the aerodynamic efficiency benefits of an articulating axial flow turbine blade concept. In addition, a design study for articulating turbine or compressor rotor blade using smart material based actuators using Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) has been carried out.     BIMA and Keck Imaging of the Radio Ring PKS 1830-211

    We discuss BIMA (Berkeley Illinois Maryland Association) data and present new high quality optical and near-IR Keck images of the bright radio ring PKS 1830-211. Applying a powerful new deconvolution algorithm we have been able to identify both images of the radio source. In addition we recover an extended source in the optical, consistent with the expected location of the lensing galaxy. The source counterparts are very red, I-K=7, suggesting strong Galactic absorption with additional absorption by the lensing galaxy at z=0.885, and consistent with the detection of high redshift molecules in the lens.Comment: To be published in the ASP Conference Proceedings, 'Highly Redshifted Radio Lines', Greenbank, W

    Occupational allergy to fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) in laboratory workers

    OBJECTIVES: Drosophila melanogaster (the 'fruit fly') is commonly used in genetic research, but there is only one report of IgE-associated allergy in exposed workers. 4 newly identified cases prompted us to examine the extent of this problem in a university laboratory. Our aim in this study is to determine the prevalence and determinants of sensitisation to fruit flies in a population of exposed workers. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we surveyed 286 employees working in a department carrying out research involving D. melanogaster. Sensitisation was assessed by specific IgE measurement in serum and examined in relation to symptoms and to estimated exposure to fruit flies. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of specific sensitisation was 6% with a clear relationship to increasing frequency/intensity of exposure (p trend<0.001). Work-related eye/nose, chest or skin symptoms were reported by substantial proportions of participants but for most of these there was no evidence of specific sensitisation to fruit fly. The overall prevalence of any work-related symptoms and sensitisation was 2.4%, rising to 7.1% in those working in high exposure groups. CONCLUSIONS: We were able to demonstrate, for the first time, a clear exposure-response relationship between fruit fly exposure and specific sensitisation. Facilities housing fruit flies should carefully consider methods to reduce exposure levels in the workplace

    A Bayesian approach to the follow-up of candidate gravitational wave signals

    Ground-based gravitational wave laser interferometers (LIGO, GEO-600, Virgo and Tama-300) have now reached high sensitivity and duty cycle. We present a Bayesian evidence-based approach to the search for gravitational waves, in particular aimed at the followup of candidate events generated by the analysis pipeline. We introduce and demonstrate an efficient method to compute the evidence and odds ratio between different models, and illustrate this approach using the specific case of the gravitational wave signal generated during the inspiral phase of binary systems, modelled at the leading quadrupole Newtonian order, in synthetic noise. We show that the method is effective in detecting signals at the detection threshold and it is robust against (some types of) instrumental artefacts. The computational efficiency of this method makes it scalable to the analysis of all the triggers generated by the analysis pipelines to search for coalescing binaries in surveys with ground-based interferometers, and to a whole variety of signal waveforms, characterised by a larger number of parameters.Comment: 9 page

    A Pre-Protostellar Core in L1551

    Large field surveys of NH3, C2S, 13CO and C18O in the L1551 dark cloud have revealed a prolate, pre-protostellar molecular core (L1551-MC) in a relatively quiescent region to the northwest of the well-known IRS 5 source. The kinetic temperature is measured to be 9K, the total mass is ~2Msun, and the average particle density is 10^4-10^5 cm^(-3). L1551-MC is 2.25' x 1.11' in projection oriented at a position angle of 133deg. The turbulent motions are on the order of the sound speed in the medium and contain 4% of the gravitational energy, E_{grav}, of the core. The angular momentum vector is projected along the major axis of L1551-MC corresponding to a rotational energy of 2.5E-3(sin i)^(-2)|E_{grav}|. The thermal energy constitutes about a third of |E_{grav}| and the virial mass is approximately equal to the total mass. L1551-MC is gravitationally bound and in the absence of strong, ~160 microgauss, magnetic fields will likely contract on a ~0.3 Myr time scale. The line profiles of many molecular species suggest that the cold quiescent interior is surrounded by a dynamic, perhaps infalling envelope which is embedded within the ambient molecular gas of L1551.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepte
