Light scattering study of the “pseudo-layer” compression elastic constant in a twist-bend nematic liquid crystal
The nematic twist-bend (TB) phase, exhibited by certain achiral thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) dimers, features a nanometer-scale, heliconical rotation of the average molecular long axis (director) with equally probable left- and right-handed domains. On meso to macroscopic scales, the TB phase may be considered as a stack of equivalent slabs or “pseudo-layers”, each one helical pitch in thickness. The long wavelength fluctuation modes should then be analogous to those of a smectic-A phase, and in particular the hydrodynamic mode combining “layer” compression and bending ought to be characterized by an effective layer compression elastic constant Beff and average director splay constant Keff1. The magnitude of Keff1 is expected to be similar to the splay constant of an ordinary nematic LC, but due to the absence of a true mass density wave, Beff could differ substantially from the typical value of ∼10⁶ Pa in a conventional smectic-A. Here we report the results of a dynamic light scattering study, which confirms the “pseudo-layer” structure of the TB phase with Beff in the range 10³–10⁴ Pa. We show additionally that the temperature dependence of Beff at the TB to nematic transition is accurately described by a coarse-grained free energy density, which is based on a Landau-deGennes expansion in terms of a heli-polar order parameter that characterizes the TB state and is linearly coupled to bend distortion of the director
A 94/183 GHz aircraft radiometer system for Project Storm Fury
A radiometer design suitable for use in NASA's WB-57F aircraft to collect data from severe storm regions was developed. The design recommended was a 94/183 GHz scanning radiometer with 3 IF channels on either side of the 183.3 GHz water vapor line and a single IF channel for a low loss atmospheric window channel at 94 GHz. The development and construction of the 94/183 GHz scanning radiometer known as the Advanced Microwave Moisture Sounder (AMMS) is presented. The radiometer scans the scene below the aircraft over an angle of + or - 45 degrees with the beamwidth of the scene viewed of approximately 2 degrees at 94 GHz and 1 degree at 183 GHz. The AMMS data collection system consists of a microcomputer used to store the radiometer data on the flight cartridge recorder, operate the stepper motor driven scanner, and collect housekeeping data such as thermistor temperature readings and aircraft time code
Molecular epidemiology of human rhinovirus infections in Kilifi, coastal Kenya
This study reports pediatric surveillance over 3 years for human rhinovirus (HRV) at the District Hospital of Kilifi, coastal Kenya. Nasopharyngeal samples were collected from children presenting at outpatient clinic with no signs of acute respiratory infection, or with signs of upper respiratory tract infection, and from children admitted to the hospital with lower respiratory tract infection. Samples were screened by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-PCR) and classified further to species by nucleotide sequencing of the VP4/VP2 junction. Of 441 HRV positives by real-time RT-PCR, 332 were classified to species, with 47% (155) being HRV-A, 5% (18) HRV-B, and 48% (159) HRV-C. There was no clear seasonal pattern of occurrence for any species. The species were present in similar proportions in the inpatient and outpatient sample sets, and no significant association between species distribution and the severity of lower respiratory tract infection in the inpatients could be determined. HRV sequence analysis revealed multiple but separate clusters in circulation particularly for HRV-A and HRV-C. Most HRV-C clusters were distinct from reference sequences downloaded from GenBank. In contrast, most HRV-A and HRV-B sequences clustered with either known serotypes or strains from elsewhere within Africa and other regions of the world. This first molecular epidemiological study of HRV in the region defines species distribution in accord with reports from elsewhere in the world, shows considerable strain diversity and does not identify an association between any species and disease severity
Ultra-Slow Light and Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Effects in a Coherently Driven Hot Atomic Gas
We report the observation of small group velocities of order 90 meters per
second, and large group delays of greater than 0.26 ms, in an optically dense
hot rubidium gas (~360 K). Media of this kind yield strong nonlinear
interactions between very weak optical fields, and very sharp spectral
features. The result is in agreement with previous studies on nonlinear
spectroscopy of dense coherent media
A case of acute myeloid leukemia with promyelocytic features characterized by expression of a novel RARG-CPSF6 fusion
Key Points
Novel RARG-CPSF6 fusion in an AML case with promyelocytic features and no evidence of PML-RARA or X-RARA fusion. Gene fusions involving RARG can initiate AML with promyelocytic morphological features.</jats:p
Charge-induced conformational changes of dendrimers
We study the effect of chargeable monomers on the conformation of dendrimers
of low generation by computer simulations, employing bare Coulomb interactions.
The presence of the latter leads to an increase in size of the dendrimer due to
a combined effect of electrostatic repulsion and the presence of counterions
within the dendrimer, and also enhances a shell-like structure for the monomers
of different generations. In the resulting structures the bond-length between
monomers, especially near the center, will increase to facilitate a more
effective usage of space in the outer-regions of the dendrimer.Comment: 7 pages, 12 figure
Effects of Space Charge, Dopants, and Strain Fields on Surfaces and Grain Boundaries in YBCO Compounds
Statistical thermodynamical and kinetically-limited models are applied to
study the origin and evolution of space charges and band-bending effects at low
angle [001] tilt grain boundaries in YBaCuO and the effects of Ca
doping upon them. Atomistic simulations, using shell models of interatomic
forces, are used to calculate the energetics of various relevant point defects.
The intrinsic space charge profiles at ideal surfaces are calculated for two
limits of oxygen contents, i.e. YBaCuO and YBaCuO. At
one limit, O, the system is an insulator, while at O, a metal. This is
analogous to the intrinsic and doping cases of semiconductors. The site
selections for doping calcium and creating holes are also investigated by
calculating the heat of solution. In a continuum treatment, the volume of
formation of doping calcium at Y-sites is computed. It is then applied to study
the segregation of calcium ions to grain boundaries in the Y-123 compound. The
influences of the segregation of calcium ions on space charge profiles are
finally studied to provide one guide for understanding the improvement of
transport properties by doping calcium at grain boundaries in Y-123 compound.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
