    Dynamical mean-field theory of spiking neuron ensembles: response to a single spike with independent noises

    Dynamics of an ensemble of NN-unit FitzHugh-Nagumo (FN) neurons subject to white noises has been studied by using a semi-analytical dynamical mean-field (DMF) theory in which the original 2N2 N-dimensional {\it stochastic} differential equations are replaced by 8-dimensional {\it deterministic} differential equations expressed in terms of moments of local and global variables. Our DMF theory, which assumes weak noises and the Gaussian distribution of state variables, goes beyond weak couplings among constituent neurons. By using the expression for the firing probability due to an applied single spike, we have discussed effects of noises, synaptic couplings and the size of the ensemble on the spike timing precision, which is shown to be improved by increasing the size of the neuron ensemble, even when there are no couplings among neurons. When the coupling is introduced, neurons in ensembles respond to an input spike with a partial synchronization. DMF theory is extended to a large cluster which can be divided into multiple sub-clusters according to their functions. A model calculation has shown that when the noise intensity is moderate, the spike propagation with a fairly precise timing is possible among noisy sub-clusters with feed-forward couplings, as in the synfire chain. Results calculated by our DMF theory are nicely compared to those obtained by direct simulations.     Service recovery strategies have been identified as a critical factor in the success of. service organizations. This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect

    Learning from multimedia and hypermedia

    Computer-based multimedia and hypermedia resources (e.g., the world wide web) have become one of the primary sources of academic information for a majority of pupils and students. In line with this expansion in the field of education, the scientific study of learning from multimedia and hypermedia has become a very active field of research. In this chapter we provide a short overview with regard to research on learning with multimedia and hypermedia. In two review sections, we describe the educational benefits of multiple representations and of learner control, as these are the two defining characteristics of hypermedia. In a third review section we describe recent scientific trends in the field of multimedia/hypermedia learning. In all three review sections we will point to relevant European work on multimedia/hypermedia carried out within the last 5 years, and often carried out within the Kaleidoscope Network of Excellence. According to the interdisciplinary nature of the field this work might come not only from psychology, but also from technology or pedagogy. Comparing the different research activities on multimedia and hypermedia that have dominated the international scientific discourse in the last decade reveals some important differences. Most important, a gap seems to exist between researchers mainly interested in a “serious” educational use of multimedia/ hypermedia and researchers mainly interested in “serious” experimental research on learning with multimedia/hypermedia. Recent discussions about the pros and cons of “design-based research” or “use-inspired basic research” can be seen as a direct consequence of an increasing awareness of the tensions within these two different cultures of research on education

    Evidence in action: a Thompsonian perspective on evidence-based decision-making in social work

    Evidence-based practice presupposes evidence-based decision-making. In the debate it is argued that a social work fashioned after evidence should be more rational, less authoritarian and built on scientific knowledge, respect and ethics. Yet the empirical evidence that this idea works is weak. In fact the difficulties met during efforts to implement evidence could be a sound reaction. Indeed difficulties experienced could be a defensive organizational reaction to a new, disturbing technology. In this article James D. Thompson’s classical study Organizations in Action from 1967 is applied to evidence-based decision-making in social work. It shows to date that many problems have been given, at best, tenuous attention. It is argued that a focus on evidence will raise ambiguity and complexity levels within organizations and that new professional specialists will emerge. Further, new constellations of power will appear, leading to a change of balance within the domains of social work

    The epigenetic evolution of glioma is determined by the IDH1 mutation status and treatment regimen

    Tumor adaptation or selection is thought to underlie therapy resistance in glioma. To investigate longitudinal epigenetic evolution of gliomas in response to therapeutic pressure, we performed an epigenomic analysis of 132 matched initial and recurrent tumors from patients with IDH-wildtype (IDHwt) and IDH-mutant (IDHmut) glioma. IDHwt gliomas showed a stable epigenome over time with relatively low levels of global methylation. The epigenome of IDHmut gliomas showed initial high levels of genome-wide DNA methylation that was progressively reduced to levels similar to those of IDHwt tumors. Integration of epigenomics, gene expression, and functional genomics identified HOXD13 as a master regulator of IDHmut astrocytoma evolution. Furthermore, relapse of IDHmut tumors was accompanied by histological progression that was associated with survival, as validated in an independent cohort. Finally, the initial cell composition of the tumor microenvironment varied between IDHwt and IDHmut tumors and changed differentially following treatment, suggesting increased neo-angiogenesis and T-cell infiltration upon treatment of IDHmut gliomas. This study provides one of the largest cohorts of paired longitudinal glioma samples with epigenomic, transcriptomic, and genomic profiling and suggests that treatment of IDHmut glioma is associated with epigenomic evolution towards an IDHwt-like phenotype

    Evaluation of the mutagenic effects of SV40 in mouse, hamster, and mouse-human hybrid cells

    We have examined the ability of SV40 to induce changes in drug or temperature resistance in mouse, hamster, and mouse-human hybrid cells. SV40 induced a substantial increase of cells resistant to 5-bromodeoxyuridine + trifluorothymidine in Balb/c 3T3 cells and induced an increase of hybrid cells resistant to 6-thioguanine. SV40 was found to be nonmutagenic or weakly mutagenic in other test systems. The 3T3 cells were T-antigen positive, exhibited a marked reduction in TK activity, were heterogeneous for [ 3 H]BrdU incorporation by autoradiography, and exhibited instability of the drug-resistance phenotype, suggesting that SV40 may be inducing resistance by an epigenetic process.
