Transport Properties of the Diluted Lorentz Slab
We study the behavior of a point particle incident from the left on a slab of
a randomly diluted triangular array of circular scatterers. Various scattering
properties, such as the reflection and transmission probabilities and the
scattering time are studied as a function of thickness and dilution. We show
that a diffusion model satisfactorily describes the mentioned scattering
properties. We also show how some of these quantities can be evaluated exactly
and their agreement with numerical experiments. Our results exhibit the
dependence of these scattering data on the mean free path. This dependence
again shows excellent agreement with the predictions of a Brownian motion
model.Comment: 14 pages of text in LaTeX, 7 figures in Postscrip
Frequency-dependent magnetotransport and particle dynamics in magnetic modulation systems
We analyze the dynamics of a charged particle moving in the presence of
spatially-modulated magnetic fields. From Poincare surfaces of section and
Liapunov exponents for characteristic trajectories we find that the fraction of
pinned and runaway quasiperiodic orbits {\em vs}. chaotic orbits depends
strongly on the ratio of cyclotron radius to the structure parameters, as well
as on the amplitude of the modulated field. We present a complete
characterization of the dynamical behavior of such structures, and investigate
the contribution to the magnetoconductivity from all different orbits using a
classical Kubo formula. Although the DC conductivity of the system depends
strongly on the pinned and runaway trajectories, the frequency response
reflects the topology of all different orbits, and even their unusual temporal
behavior.Comment: Submitted to PRB - 14 figure files - REVTEX tex
The Coherent State Representation of Quantum Fluctuations in the Early Universe
Using the squeezed state formalism the coherent state representation of
quantum fluctuations in an expanding universe is derived. It is shown that this
provides a useful alternative to the Wigner function as a phase space
representation of quantum fluctuations. The quantum to classical transition of
fluctuations is naturally implemented by decohering the density matrix in this
representation. The entropy of the decohered vacua is derived. It is shown that
the decoherence process breaks the physical equivalence between vacua that
differ by a coordinate dependent phase generated by a surface term in the
Lagrangian. In particular, scale invariant power spectra are only obtained for
a special choice of surface term.Comment: 25 pages in revtex 3. This version is completely revised with

Time series irreversibility: a visibility graph approach
We propose a method to measure real-valued time series irreversibility which
combines two differ- ent tools: the horizontal visibility algorithm and the
Kullback-Leibler divergence. This method maps a time series to a directed
network according to a geometric criterion. The degree of irreversibility of
the series is then estimated by the Kullback-Leibler divergence (i.e. the
distinguishability) between the in and out degree distributions of the
associated graph. The method is computationally effi- cient, does not require
any ad hoc symbolization process, and naturally takes into account multiple
scales. We find that the method correctly distinguishes between reversible and
irreversible station- ary time series, including analytical and numerical
studies of its performance for: (i) reversible stochastic processes
(uncorrelated and Gaussian linearly correlated), (ii) irreversible stochastic
pro- cesses (a discrete flashing ratchet in an asymmetric potential), (iii)
reversible (conservative) and irreversible (dissipative) chaotic maps, and (iv)
dissipative chaotic maps in the presence of noise. Two alternative graph
functionals, the degree and the degree-degree distributions, can be used as the
Kullback-Leibler divergence argument. The former is simpler and more intuitive
and can be used as a benchmark, but in the case of an irreversible process with
null net current, the degree-degree distribution has to be considered to
identifiy the irreversible nature of the series.Comment: submitted for publicatio
Self-consistent quantal treatment of decay rates within the perturbed static path approximation
The framework of the Perturbed Static Path Approximation (PSPA) is used to
calculate the partition function of a finite Fermi system from a Hamiltonian
with a separable two body interaction. Therein, the collective degree of
freedom is introduced in self-consistent fashion through a Hubbard-Stratonovich
transformation. In this way all transport coefficients which dominate the decay
of a meta-stable system are defined and calculated microscopically. Otherwise
the same formalism is applied as in the Caldeira-Leggett model to deduce the
decay rate from the free energy above the so called crossover temperature

Analytical and numerical investigation of escape rate for a noise driven bath
We consider a system-reservoir model where the reservoir is modulated by an
external noise. Both the internal noise of the reservoir and the external noise
are stationary, Gaussian and are characterized by arbitrary decaying
correlation functions. Based on a relation between the dissipation of the
system and the response function of the reservoir driven by external noise we
numerically examine the model using a full bistable potential to show that one
can recover the turn-over features of the usual Kramers' dynamics when the
external noise modulates the reservoir rather than the system directly. We
derive the generalized Kramers' rate for this nonequilibrium open system. The
theoretical results are verified by numerical simulation.Comment: Revtex, 25 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Weak Localization and Integer Quantum Hall Effect in a Periodic Potential
We consider magnetotransport in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas in
the presence of a periodic modulation in one direction. Existing quasiclassical
and quantum approaches to this problem account for Weiss oscillations in the
resistivity tensor at moderate magnetic fields, as well as a strong
modulation-induced modification of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations at higher
magnetic fields. They do not account, however, for the operation at even higher
magnetic fields of the integer quantum Hall effect, for which quantum
interference processes are responsible. We then introduce a field-theory
approach, based on a nonlinear sigma model, which encompasses naturally both
the quasiclassical and quantum-mechanical approaches, as well as providing a
consistent means of extending them to include quantum interference corrections.
A perturbative renormalization-group analysis of the field theory shows how
weak localization corrections to the conductivity tensor may be described by a
modification of the usual one-parameter scaling, such as to accommodate the
anisotropy of the bare conductivity tensor. We also show how the two-parameter
scaling, conjectured as a model for the quantum Hall effect in unmodulated
systems, may be generalized similarly for the modulated system. Within this
model we illustrate the operation of the quantum Hall effect in modulated
systems for parameters that are realistic for current experiments.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, ReVTeX; revised version with condensed

All-optical switching and strong coupling using tunable whispering-gallery-mode microresonators
We review our recent work on tunable, ultrahigh quality factor
whispering-gallery-mode bottle microresonators and highlight their applications
in nonlinear optics and in quantum optics experiments. Our resonators combine
ultra-high quality factors of up to Q = 3.6 \times 10^8, a small mode volume,
and near-lossless fiber coupling, with a simple and customizable mode structure
enabling full tunability. We study, theoretically and experimentally, nonlinear
all-optical switching via the Kerr effect when the resonator is operated in an
add-drop configuration. This allows us to optically route a single-wavelength
cw optical signal between two fiber ports with high efficiency. Finally, we
report on progress towards strong coupling of single rubidium atoms to an
ultra-high Q mode of an actively stabilized bottle microresonator.Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures. Accepted for publication in Applied Physics B.

Branching Fractions for D0 -> K+K- and D0 -> pi+pi-, and a Search for CP Violation in D0 Decays
Using the large hadroproduced charm sample collected in experiment E791 at
Fermilab, we have measured ratios of branching fractions for the two-body
singly-Cabibbo-suppressed charged decays of the D0:
(D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.109 +- 0.003 +- 0.003,
(D0 -> pipi)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.040 +- 0.002 +- 0.003, and
(D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> pipi) = 2.75 +- 0.15 +- 0.16. We have looked for
differences in the decay rates of D0 and D0bar to the CP eigenstates K+K- and
pi+pi-, and have measured the CP asymmetry parameters
A_CP(K+K-) = -0.010 +- 0.049 +- 0.012 and
A_CP(pi+pi-) = -0.049 +- 0.078 +- 0.030, both consistent with zero.Comment: 10 Postscript pages, including 2 figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett.
