Wolfgang Holdheim, writing on the same subject, observes that the legal error at the end of that novel is indicative of the ambiguities inherent in modern literature\u27s approach to reality. These critics have shown a sensitivity to a topic otherwise rarely treated: the use of the legal theme within the modern novel not merely for dramatic effect, but also for thematic, structural and formal purposes not explicitly stated by the writer
Thermochemical stability of low-iron, manganese-enriched olivine in astrophysical environments
Low-iron, manganese-enriched (LIME) olivine grains are found in cometary samples returned by the Stardust mission from comet 81P/Wild 2. Similar grains are found in primitive meteoritic clasts and unequilibrated meteorite matrix. LIME olivine is thermodynamically stable in a vapor of solar composition at high temperature at total pressures of a millibar to a microbar, but enrichment of solar composition vapor in a dust of chondritic composition causes the FeO/MnO ratio of olivine to increase. The compositions of LIME olivines in primitive materials indicate oxygen fugacities close to those of a very reducing vapor of solar composition. The compositional zoning of LIME olivines in amoeboid olivine aggregates is consistent with equilibration with nebular vapor in the stability field of olivine, without re-equilibration at lower temperatures. A similar history is likely for LIME olivines found in comet samples and in interplanetary dust particles. LIME olivine is not likely to persist in nebular conditions in which silicate liquids are stable
Canadian Signal Piracy Revisted in Light of United States Ratification of the Free Trade Agreememt and the Berne Convention: Is This a Blueprint for Global Intellectual Property Protection?
This note will examine the Canadian piracy problem in light of these recent developments. Next, it will analyze whether the FTA and the Berne Convention can provide an adequate means of preventing unauthorized retransmission of United States intellectual property in the future. Finally, this note will consider practicable alternatives, which would alleviate electronic piracy on a global scale. This note will conclude that if a practicable remedy can be enacted in Canada, then such a remedy could act as a blueprint for global implementation
On the equatorial Pacific response to the 1982/1983 EI NinoāSouthern Oscillation event
The ocean\u27s response to the 1982/83 EI NinoāSouthern Oscillation event was the largest ever documented. In this paper we explore the effects of certain details of the observed zonal wind stress anomaly field upon the ocean\u27s response using a linear, adiabatic, reduced gravity, analytical model. The increase in magnitude of the downwelling response over the composite of previous EI Nino events is attributed to the eastward translation of the observed westerly wind anomaly and the double peaked downwelling at the South American coast is attributed to the amplitude modulation of this anomaly. Effects of an easterly anomaly which appeared to the west of the dateline midway through the event are also considered

In this chapter I investigate epistemological consequences of the fact that seeming-based justification is elusive, in the sense that the subject can lose this justification simply by reflecting on her seemings. I argue that since seeming-based justification is elusive, the antisceptical bite of phenomenal conservatism is importantly limited. I also contend that since seeming-based justification has this feature, phenomenal conservatism isnāt actually afflicted by easy justification problems
Synapse at CAp 2017 NER challenge: Fasttext CRF
We present our system for the CAp 2017 NER challenge which is about named
entity recognition on French tweets. Our system leverages unsupervised learning
on a larger dataset of French tweets to learn features feeding a CRF model. It
was ranked first without using any gazetteer or structured external data, with
an F-measure of 58.89\%. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first system
to use fasttext embeddings (which include subword representations) and an
embedding-based sentence representation for NER
Pulse-to-pulse intensity modulation and drifting subpulses in recycled pulsars
We report the detection of pulse-to-pulse periodic intensity modulations, in
observations of recycled pulsars. Even though the detection of individual
pulses was generally not possible due to their low flux density and short
duration, through the accumulation of statistics over sequences of 10^5--10^6
pulses we were able to determine the presence and properties of the
pulse-to-pulse intensity variations of six pulsars. In most cases we found that
the modulation included a weak, broadly quasi-periodic component. For two
pulsars the sensitivity was high enough to ascertain that the modulation phase
apparently varies systematically across the profile, indicating that the
modulation appears as drifting subpulses. We detected brighter than average
individual pulses in several pulsars, with energies up to 2--7 times higher
than the mean, similar to results from normal pulsars. We were sensitive to
giant pulses of a rate of occurrence equal to (and in many instances much lower
than) that of PSR B1937+21 at 1400 MHz (~30 times lower than at 430 MHz), but
none were detected, indicating that the phenomenon is rare in recycled pulsars.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, accepted to A&
Does tiny-scale atomic structure exist in the interstellar medium ?
We report on preliminary results from the recent multi-epoch neutral hydrogen
absorption measurements toward three pulsars, B0823+26, B1133+16 and B2016+28,
using the Arecibo telescope. We do not find significant variations in optical
depth profiles over periods of 0.3 and 9--10 yr, or on spatial scales of 10--20
and 70--85 AU. The large number of non detections of the tiny scale atomic
structure suggests that the AU-sized structure is not ubiquitous in the
interstellar medium and could be quite a rare phenomenon.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters, 5 pages, 2 figure
Teaching Siblings to Encourage and Praise Play: Supporting Interactions When One Sibling has Autism
Sibling relationships may be strained when one sibling is typically developing (TD) and one has a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). TD siblings have been taught to encourage play in their siblings with ASD but there is limited literature examining the impact of intervention on the quality of the siblingsā relationships. In this study, we taught four TD siblings to encourage and praise play skills in their siblings with ASD as well as self-monitor those play skills. We measured changes in social-communicative behaviors during siblingsā interactions. All TD siblings learned the targeted play skills and increased social-communicative behaviors. Only one child with ASD increased in social-communicative behaviors, but three maintained or increased the proportion of their interactions in which they responded to their TD sibling at the end of intervention. Future sibling intervention research should evaluate child characteristics and intervention factors that may influence childrenās response to intervention and continue to incorporate multiple measures of relationship quality
