    Combining the Box-Cox power and generalised log transformations to accommodate nonpositive responses in linear and mixed-effects linear models

    Transformation of a response variable can greatly expand the class of problems for which the linear regression model or linear mixed-model is appropriate. Beginning with the fundamental work of Box and Cox, maximum-likelihood-like estimation has been applied to select a transformation from among a family of transformations, with the possible goals of achieving approximate normality, removing nonlinearity in a mean function, or stabilizing variance. The Box-Cox power family (BC) of transformations is by far the most common with the Box-Cox methodology, and it requires a strictly positive response. In this article we introduce a new family of transformations that we call the Box-Cox power with nonpositives (BCN) family that allows inclusion of a few nonpositive values. The BCN family is a modification of the basic power family that is inspired by the generalised log, or glog transformation, proposed for use with the more limited goals of stabilizing variance or achieving approximate normality. The glog transformation is itself a special case of the Johnson SU transformation, and we show that the BCN family derived from it is in turn a simple modification of the BC family. Computer code for implementing this family is included in the car package in R (Fox and Weisberg, 2011). The methodology is illustrated using a problem in clinical chemistry

    Phase Structure of Compact Star in Modified Quark-Meson Coupling Model

    The K−^- condensation and quark deconfinement phase transitions are investigated in the modified quark-meson coupling model. It is shown that K−^- condensation is suppressed because of the quark deconfinement when B1/4<B^{1/4}<202.2MeV, where BB is the bag constant for unpaired quark matter. With the equation of state (EOS) solved self-consistently, we discuss the properties of compact stars. We find that the EOS of pure hadron matter with condensed K−^- phase should be ruled out by the redshift for star EXO0748-676, while EOS containing unpaired quark matter phase with B1/4B^{1/4} being about 180MeV could be consistent with this observation and the best measured mass of star PSR 1913+16. We then probe into the change of the phase structures in possible compact stars with deconfinment phase as the central densities increase. But if the recent inferred massive star among Terzan 5 with M>>1.68M⊙_{\odot} is confirmed, all the present EOSes with condensed phase and deconfined phase would be ruled out and therefore these exotic phases are unlikely to appear within neutron stars.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

I argue that since seeming-based justification is elusive, the antisceptical bite of phenomenal conservatism is importantly limited. I also contend that since seeming-based justification has this feature, phenomenal conservatism isn’t actually afflicted by easy justification problems

    A CLEAN-based Method for Deconvolving Interstellar Pulse Broadening from Radio Pulses

    Multipath propagation in the interstellar medium distorts radio pulses, an effect predominant for distant pulsars observed at low frequencies. Typically, broadened pulses are analyzed to determine the amount of propagation-induced pulse broadening, but with little interest in determining the undistorted pulse shapes. In this paper we develop and apply a method that recovers both the intrinsic pulse shape and the pulse broadening function that describes the scattering of an impulse. The method resembles the CLEAN algorithm used in synthesis imaging applications, although we search for the best pulse broadening function, and perform a true deconvolution to recover intrinsic pulse structre. As figures of merit to optimize the deconvolution, we use the positivity and symmetry of the deconvolved result along with the mean square residual and the number of points below a given threshold. Our method makes no prior assumptions about the intrinsic pulse shape and can be used for a range of scattering functions for the interstellar medium. It can therefore be applied to a wider variety of measured pulse shapes and degrees of scattering than the previous approaches.     Shovels and Swords: How realistic and fantastical themes affect children's word learning

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Research has shown that storybooks and play sessions help preschool children learn vocabulary, thereby benefiting their language and school readiness skills. But the kind of content that leads to optimal vocabulary learning – realistic or fantastical – remains largely unexplored. We investigate this issue as part of a large-scale study of vocabulary learning in low-income classrooms. Preschoolers (N = 154) learned 20 new words over the course of a two-week intervention. These words were taught using either realistic (e.g., farms) or fantastical (e.g., dragons) storybooks and toys. Children learned the new words in both conditions, and their comprehension knowledge did not differ across conditions. However, children who engaged in stories and play with a fantastical theme showed significantly greater gains in their production knowledge. Reasons for and implications of this result are discussed

    Primitive Fine-Grained Matrix in the Unequilbrated Enstatite Chondrites

    Enstatite chondrites (EC) have important implications for constraining conditions in the early solar system and for understanding the evolution of the Earth and other inner planets. They are among the most reduced solar system materials as reflected in their mineral compositions and assemblage. They are the only chondrites with oxygen as well as Cr, Ti, Ni and Zn stable isotope compositions similar to the earth and moon and most are completely dry, lacking any evidence of hydrous alteration; the only exception are EC clasts in the Kaidun breccia which have hydrous minerals. Thus, ECs likely formed within the snow line and are good candidates to be building blocks of the inner planets. Our goals are to provide a more detailed characterization the fine-grained matrix in E3 chondrites, understand its origin and relationship to chondrules, decipher the relationship between EH and EL chondrites and compare E3 matrix to matrices in C and O chondrites as well as other fine-grained solar system materials. Is E3 matrix the dust remaining from chondrule formation or a product of parent body processing or both
