An Austrian Identity Crisis: Conservative Thought, Political Posters, and Questions of National Identity during the First Republic.

The political writings of Karl Lueger and Georg Ritter von Schönerer, the founders of the Austrian Christian Social and German National Parties, shaped the right-wing political discourse regarding national identity after the Austro-Hungarian Ausgleich in 1867. As Habsburg hegemony in Central Europe crumbled after the First World War, this conservative political discourse concerning Austrian identity was resurrected in the political posters of the Austrian First Republic. Through an examination of Christian Social and German National constructions of national identity in both pre- and post-World War I Austria, this paper seeks to determine the role that conservative constructions of Austrian National identity played in the struggle to form a collective idea of Austrianness during the interwar period

An Unusual Case of Spontaneous Remission of Hodgkin's Disease after a Single Cycle of COPP-ABV Chemotherapy Followed by Infectious Complications

Advanced Hodgkin's disease is usually treated with six or more cycles of combination chemotherapy. Spontaneous regression of the cancer is very rarely reported in patients with Hodgkin's disease. We present an unusual case of a patient with Hodgkin's disease who experienced complete remission with a single cycle of chemotherapy, followed by pneumonia. The case was a 36-year-old man diagnosed with stage IVB mixed cellularity Hodgkin's disease in November 2000. After treatment with one cycle of COPP-ABV (cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine, prednisone, doxorubicin, bleomycin, and vinblastine) chemotherapy without bleomycin, the patient developed interstitial pneumonia and was cared in the intensive care unit (ICU) for two months. Follow-up chest computerized tomography (CT), performed during the course of ICU care, revealed markedly improved mediastinal lymphomatous lesions. Furthermore, follow-up whole body CT and 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography showed complete disappearance of the lymphomatous lesions. Four years later, the patient is well and without relapse. This report is followed by a short review of the literature on spontaneous regression of Hodgkin's disease. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of spontaneous remission of Hodgkin's disease in Korea

An Application of the Concept of the Therapeutic Alliance To Sadomasochistic Pathology

This paper traces the history of the therapeutic alliance concept, examining how it has been used and misused, at times elevated to a central position and at others rejected altogether. The loss of this concept created a vacuum in classical psychoanalysis that has been filled by rival theories. The continuing usefulness of looking at the treatment process through the lens of the therapeutic alliance, particularly in relation to the manifold difficulties of working with sadomasochistic pathology, is suggested. To this end, revisions of the theory of the therapeutic alliance are suggested to address some of the difficulties that have arisen in conceptualizing this aspect of the therapeutic relationship, and to provide an integrated dynamic model for working with patients at each phase of treatment. This revised model acknowledges the complexity of the domain and encompasses the multiple tasks, functions, partners, and treatment phases involved. Oral History Interview with Howard Weinshel, July 9, 1990

"Mr. Howard Weinshel was born in 1904 in a village in Russian Poland. His father was 'middle class' as he dealt in livestock. Mr. Weinshel's place of birth was a classic shtetl as 90% of the population was Jewish. Citing Polish anti-Semitism as the reason for immigrating, he arrived in the United Stated in 1922. Ironically, he found himself once again among Poles as a buyer for Goldmann's department store, which was one of the largest and most popular department stores on the Polish South Side of Milwaukee. His relationship with the clientele at Goldmann's encouraged him to start a store of his own on Mitchell street. Like many other small businesses, the depression forced him to close his shop. Mr. Weinshel has 'never denied being a Jew' and indeed, is very involved in the Jewish community. He teaches Yiddish and was involved in Jewish theater in Milwaukee." - Robert G. Mink, 199
