Scaling Behavior of the Activated Conductivity in a Quantum Hall Liquid

We propose a scaling model for the universal longitudinal conductivity near the mobility edge for the integer quantum Hall liquid. We fit our model with available experimental data on exponentially activated conductance near the Landau level tails in the integer quantum Hall regime. We obtain quantitative agreement between our scaling model and the experimental data over a wide temperature and magnetic field range.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, 2 figures (available upon request), #phd0

Reconstructing diffusion kurtosis tensors from sparse noisy measurements

Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) is a recent MRI based method that can quantify deviation from Gaussian behavior using a kurtosis tensor. DKI has potential value for the assessment of neurologic diseases. Existing techniques for diffusion kurtosis imaging typically need to capture hundreds of MRI images, which is not clinically feasible on human subjects. In this paper, we develop robust denoising and model fitting methods that make it possible to accurately reconstruct a kurtosis tensor from 75 or less noisy measurements. Our denoising method is based on subspace learning for multi-dimensional signals and our model fitting technique uses iterative reweighting to effectively discount the influences of outliers. The total data acquisition time thus drops significantly, making diffusion kurtosis imaging feasible for many clinical applications involving human subjects. © 2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 17th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP 2010), Hong Kong, China, 26-29 September 2010. Mesoscopic Resistance Fluctuations in Cobalt Nanoparticles

We present measurements of mesoscopic resistance fluctuations in cobalt nanoparticles and study how the fluctuations with bias voltage, bias fingerprints, respond to magnetization reversal processes. Bias fingerprints rearrange when domains are nucleated or annihilated. The domain-wall causes an electron wavefunction phase-shift of ≈5π\approx 5\pi. The phase-shift is not caused by the Aharonov-Bohm effect; we explain how it arises from the mistracking effect, where electron spins lag in orientation with respect to the moments inside the domain-wall. Dephasing time in Co at 0.03K0.03K is short, τϕ∼ps\tau_\phi\sim ps, which we attribute to the strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy.Comment: 5 pages 3 figs colou

Accurate translation of the genetic code depends on mRNA:tRNA codon:anticodon base pairing. Here we exploit an emissive, isosteric adenosine surrogate that allows direct measurement of the kinetics of codon:anticodon University of California base formation during protein synthesis. Our results suggest that codon:anticodon base pairing is subject to tighter constraints at the middle position than at the 5'- and 3'-positions, and further suggest a sequential mechanism of formation of the three base pairs in the codon:anticodon helix

Fractional central difference Kalman filter with unknown prior information

© 2018 In this paper, a generalized fractional central difference Kalman filter for nonlinear discrete fractional dynamic systems is proposed. Based on the Stirling interpolation formula, the presented algorithm can be implemented as no derivatives are needed. Besides, in order to estimate the state with unknown prior information, a maximum a posteriori principle based adaptive fractional central difference Kalman filter is derived. The adaptive algorithm can estimate the noise statistics and system state simultaneously. The unbiasedness of the proposed algorithm is analyzed. Several numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the two Kalman filters
