Velocity-force characteristics of an interface driven through a periodic potential
We study the creep dynamics of a two-dimensional interface driven through a
periodic potential using dynamical renormalization group methods. We find that
the nature of weak-drive transport depends qualitatively on whether the
temperature is above or below the equilibrium roughening transition
temperature . Above , the velocity-force characteristics is Ohmic,
with linear mobility exhibiting a jump discontinuity across the transition. For
, the transport is highly nonlinear, exhibiting an interesting
crossover in temperature and weak external force . For intermediate drive,
, we find near a power-law velocity-force characteristics
, with , and well-below ,
, with . In the limit
of vanishing drive () the velocity-force characteristics crosses over

Eosinophil and T Cell Markers Predict Functional Decline in COPD Patients
BACKGROUND. The major marker utilized to monitor COPD patients is forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). However, asingle measurement of FEV1 cannot reliably predict subsequent decline. Recent studies indicate that T lymphocytes and eosinophils are important determinants of disease stability in COPD. We therefore measured cytokine levels in the lung lavage fluid and plasma of COPD patients in order to determine if the levels of T cell or eosinophil related cytokines were predictive of the future course of the disease. METHODS. Baseline lung lavage and plasma samples were collected from COPD subjects with moderately severe airway obstruction and emphysematous changes on chest CT. The study participants were former smokers who had not had a disease exacerbation within the past six months or used steroids within the past two months. Those subjects who demonstrated stable disease over the following six months (ΔFEV1 % predicted = 4.7 ± 7.2; N = 34) were retrospectively compared with study participants who experienced a rapid decline in lung function (ΔFEV1 % predicted = -16.0 ± 6.0; N = 16) during the same time period and with normal controls (N = 11). Plasma and lung lavage cytokines were measured from clinical samples using the Luminex multiplex kit which enabled the simultaneous measurement of several T cell and eosinophil related cytokines. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. Stable COPD participants had significantly higher plasma IL-2 levels compared to participants with rapidly progressive COPD (p = 0.04). In contrast, plasma eotaxin-1 levels were significantly lower in stable COPD subjects compared to normal controls (p < 0.03). In addition, lung lavage eotaxin-1 levels were significantly higher in rapidly progressive COPD participants compared to both normal controls (p < 0.02) and stable COPD participants (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION. These findings indicate that IL-2 and eotaxin-1 levels may be important markers of disease stability in advanced emphysema patients. Quantum key distribution in terms of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state: multi-key generation
In this paper, we develop a quantum key distribution protocol based on the
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states (GHZs). The particles are exchanged among
the users in blocks through two steps. In this protocol, for three-particle
GHZs three keys can be simultaneously generated. The advantage of this is that
the users can select the most suitable key for communication. The protocol can
be generalized to users to provide keys. The protocol has two levels
for checking the eavesdroppers. Moreover, we discuss the security of the

The radio luminosity, black hole mass and Eddington ratio for quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We investigate the \mbh- \sigma_* relation for radio-loud quasars with
redshift in Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The
sample consists of 3772 quasars with better model of H and \oiii lines
and available radio luminosity, including 306 radio-loud quasars, 3466
radio-quiet quasars with measured radio luminosity or upper-limit of radio
luminosity (181 radio-quiet quasars with measured radio luminosity). The virial
supermassive black hole mass (\mbh) is calculated from the broad \hb line, the
host stellar velocity dispersion () is traced by the core \oiii
gaseous velocity dispersion, and the radio luminosity and the radio loudness
are derived from the FIRST catalog. Our results are follows: (1) For
radio-quiet quasars, we confirm that there is no obvious deviation from the
\mbh- \sigma_* relation defined in inactive galaxies when \mbh uncertainties
and luminosity bias are concerned. (2) We find that radio-loud quasars deviate
much from the \mbh- \sigma_* relation respect to that for radio-quiet
quasars. This deviation is only partly due to the possible cosmology evolution
of the \mbh- \sigma_* relation and the luminosity bias. (3) The radio
luminosity is proportional to
\mbh^{1.28^{+0.23}_{-0.16}}(\lb/\ledd)^{1.29^{+0.31}_{-0.24}} for radio-quiet
quasars and \mbh^{3.10^{+0.60}_{-0.70}}(\lb/\ledd)^{4.18^{+1.40}_{-1.10}} for
radio-loud quasars. The weaker correlation of the radio luminosity dependence
upon the mass and the Eddington ratio for radio-loud quasars shows that other
physical effects would account for their radio luminosities, such as the black

Construction of Precision sMDT Detector for ATLAS Muon Spectrometer Upgrade
This paper describes the small-diameter monitored drift-tube detector
construction at the University of Michigan as a contribution to the ATLAS Muon
Spectrometer upgrade for the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
Measurements of the first 30 chambers built at Michigan show that the drift
tube wire position accuracy meets the specification of 20 microns. The
positions of the platforms for alignment and magnetic field sensors are all
installed well within the required precision. The cosmic ray test measurements
show single wire tracking resolution of 100 +- 7 microns with an average
detection efficiency above 99 %. The infrastructure, tooling, techniques, and
procedures for chamber production are described in detail. The results from the
chamber quality control tests of the first 30 constructed chambers are

Commensurate and Incommensurate Vortex Lattice Melting in Periodic Pinning Arrays
We examine the melting of commensurate and incommensurate vortex lattices
interacting with square pinning arrays through the use of numerical
simulations. For weak pinning strength in the commensurate case we observe an
order-order transition from a commensurate square vortex lattice to a
triangular floating solid phase as a function of temperature. This floating
solid phase melts into a liquid at still higher temperature. For strong pinning
there is only a single transition from the square pinned lattice to the liquid
state. For strong pinning in the incommensurate case, we observe a multi-stage
melting in which the interstitial vortices become mobile first, followed by the
melting of the entire lattice, consistent with recent imaging experiments. The
initial motion of vortices in the incommensurate phase occurs by an exchange
process of interstitial vortices with vortices located at the pinning sites. We
have also examined the vortex melting behavior for higher matching fields and
find that a coexistence of a commensurate pinned vortex lattice with an
interstitial vortex liquid occurs while at higher temperatures the entire
vortex lattice melts. For triangular arrays at incommensurate fields higher
than the first matching field we observe that the initial vortex motion can
occur through a novel correlated ring excitation where a number of vortices can
rotate around a pinned vortex. We also discuss the relevance of our results to
recent experiments of colloidal particles interacting with periodic trap

Andreev reflections in the pseudogap state of cuprate supercondcutors
We propose that, if the pseudogap state in the cuprate superconductors can be
described in terms of the phase-incoherent preformed pairs, there should exist
Andreev reflection from these pairs even above the superconducting transition
temperature, . After giving qualitative arguments for this effect, we
present more quantitative calculations based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes
equation. Experimental observations of the effects of Andreev reflections above
---such as an enhanced tunneling conductance below the gap along the
copper oxide plane---could provide unambiguous evidence for the preformed pairs

Hadroproduction of the Chi1 and Chi2 States of Charmonium in 800 GeV/c Proton-Silicon Interactions
The cross sections for the hadroproduction of the Chi1 and Chi2 states of
charmonium in proton-silicon collisions at sqrt{s}=38.8 GeV have been measured
in Fermilab fixed target Experiment 771. The Chi states were observed via their
radiative decay to J/psi+gamma, where the photon converted to e+e- in the
material of the spectrometer. The measured values for the Chi1 and Chi2 cross
sections for x_F>0 are 263+-69(stat)+-32(syst) and 498+-143(stat)+-67(syst) nb
per nucleon respectively. The resulting sigma(Chi1}/sigma(Chi2) ratio of
0.53+-0.20(stat)+-0.07(syst), although somewhat larger than most theoretical
expectations, can be accomodated by the latest theoretical estimates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Steps Toward Determination of the Size and Structure of the Broad-Line Region in Active Galactic Nuclei. XV. Long-Term Optical Monitoring of NGC 5548
We present the results of three years of ground-based observations of the
Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548, which combined with previously reported data, yield
optical continuum and broad-line H-beta light curves for a total of eight
years. The light curves consist of over 800 points, with a typical spacing of a
few days between observations. During this eight-year period, the nuclear
continuum has varied by more than a factor of seven, and the H-beta emission
line has varied by a factor of nearly six. The H-beta emission line responds to
continuum variations with a time delay or lag of 10-20 days, the precise value
varying somewhat from year to year. We find some indications that the lag
varies with continuum flux in the sense that the lag is larger when the source

A diagnosis of prostate cancer and pursuit of active surveillance is not followed by weight loss: potential for a teachable moment
BACKGROUND:
Obesity is a risk factor for incident prostate cancer (PC) as well as risk of disease progression and mortality. We hypothesized that men diagnosed with lower-risk PC and who elected active surveillance (AS) for their cancer management would likely initiate lifestyle changes that lead to weight loss.
METHODS:
Patients were enrolled in the Prostate Active Surveillance Study (PASS), a multicenter prospective biomarker discovery and validation study of men who have chosen AS for their PC. Data from 442 men diagnosed with PC within 1 year of study entry who completed a standard of care 12-month follow-up visit were analyzed. We examined the change in weight and body mass index (BMI) over the first year of study participation.
RESULTS:
After 1 year on AS, 7.5% (33/442) of patients had lost 5% or more of their on-study weight. The proportion of men who lost 5% or more weight was similar across categories of baseline BMI: normal/underweight (8%), overweight (6%) and obese (10%, χ2 test P=0.44). The results were similar for patients enrolled in the study 1 year or 6 months after diagnosis. By contrast, after 1 year, 7.7% (34/442) of patients had gained >5% of their weight.
CONCLUSIONS:
Only 7.5% of men with low-risk PC enrolled in AS lost a modest (⩾5%) amount of weight after diagnosis. Given that obesity is related to PC progression and mortality, targeted lifestyle interventions may be effective at this 'teachable moment', as men begin AS for low-risk PC
