    Effects of Tanglehead Expansion on Bobwhite Habitat Use in South Texas

    Usable space for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) has been reduced across a large portion of South Texas rangelands due to the spread of non-native, invasive grasses. A native grass, tanglehead (Heteropogon contortus) has rapidly expanded its dominance in the western Sand Sheet of South Texas within the last 10-15 years. It has formed high-density monocultures, similar to non-native grasses, which are associated with losses of forb and grass diversity as well as bare ground, which are key components of bobwhite habitat. The objectives of our research were to 1) determine selection-avoidance of habitat features by bobwhites, and 2) determine the effects of tanglehead cover on vegetation characteristics. We detected 488 coveys across 20,103 ha on helicopter surveys conducted December 2014 in South Texas. We measured 6 vegetation characterstics (grass and forb species richness, vegetation height, woody-plant cover, tanglehead cover, and non-native grass cover) at all covey detections and an equal number of random locations. We developed continuous selection ratios based on probability density functions of used and random points derived using Simple Saddlepoint Approximations to determine habitat selection by bobwhites. We also used quantile regression at the 10th, 50th, and 90th quantiles to determine relationships between tanglehead and vegetation factors. Bobwhite avoided areas of high canopy cover (\u3e20%) of all invasive grasses measured. Brush cover was selected for up to 47%, after which it was avoided. We found significant negative relationships between tanglehead cover and forb and grass species richness, bare ground, and shrub cover, and a positive relationship with vegetation height at all quantiles modeled. Our results demonstrate the negative effects of increased tanglehead cover on native rangeland habitats. Further expansion by tanglehead has the potential to significantly reduce usable space for bobwhites in South Texas

    The beginning of time? Evidence for catastrophic drought in Baringo in the early nineteenth century

    New developments in the collection of palaeo-data over the past two decades have transformed our understanding of climate and environmental history in eastern Africa. This article utilises instrumental and proxy evidence of historical lake-level fluctuations from Baringo and Bogoria, along with other Rift Valley lakes, to document the timing and magnitude of hydroclimate variability at decadal to century time scales since 1750. These data allow us to construct a record of past climate variation not only for the Baringo basin proper, but also across a sizable portion of central and northern Kenya. This record is then set alongside historical evidence, from oral histories gathered amongst the peoples of northern Kenya and the Rift Valley and from contemporary observations recorded by travellers through the region, to offer a reinterpretation of human activity and its relationship to environmental history in the nineteenth century. The results reveal strong evidence of a catastrophic drought in the early nineteenth century, the effects of which radically alters our historical understanding of the character of settlement, mobility and identity within the Baringo–Bogoria basin

    Banking from Leeds, not London: regional strategy and structure at the Yorkshire Bank, 1859–1952

    Industrial philanthropist Edward Akroyd created the Yorkshire Penny Savings Bank in 1859. Despite competition from the Post Office Savings Bank after 1861 and a serious reserve problem in 1911, it sustained his overall strategy to become a successful regional bank. Using archival and contemporary sources to build on recent scholarship illustrating how savings banks were integrated into local economies and the complementary roles of philanthropy and paternalism, we analyse an English regional bank's strategy, including an assessment of strategic innovation, ownership changes and management structure. This will demonstrate that the founder's vision continued, even though the 1911 crisis radically altered both strategy and structure

    Challenges facing gap-based silviculture and possible solutions for mesic northern forests in North America

    Gap-based silvicultural systems were developed under the assumption that richness, and diversity of tree species and other biota positively respond to variation in size of harvest-created canopy gaps. However, varying gap size alone often does not meet diversity objectives and broader goals to address contemporary forest conditions. Recent research highlights the need to consider site factors and history, natural disturbance models, within-gap structure and recruitment requirements in addition to light resources for desired tree diversity. This synthesis brings together silvicultural developments and ecological literature on gap-based management, highlighting interactions with other factors such as microsite conditions, non-tree vegetation and more. We pose a revised concept for managers and researchers to use in prescriptions and studies focused on integrated overstory and understory manipulations that increase structural complexity within and around canopy openings

    Firearms on College Campuses: Research Evidence nad Policy Implications

    This report reviews the evidence surrounding the relationship between civilian gun carrying and violent crime and mass shootings and factors that are unique to public safety on college campuses. Policies removing restrictions on civilian gun carrying are based on claims or assumptions about civilian gun use, the impact of state Right-to-Carry (RTC) laws, and the nature of mass shootings that are not supported by or are contrary to the best available research. The incidence of civilian self-defensive gun use (SDGU) is difficult to discern as available data are based on self-report, and distinguishing aggressor from victim in interpersonal altercations can be highly subjective. Nonetheless, data from the National Crime Victimization Survey indicate that SDGU is relatively rare (about 102,000 self-reported incidents per year affecting 0.9% of all violent crime victimizations) and is no more effective in reducing victims' risk of injury than other victim responses to attempted violent crimes. Research led by John Lott, author of More Guns, Less Crime, suggesting that RTC laws prevent violent crime has important flaws that biased his findings. The most recent and rigorous research on RTC laws that corrects for these flaws consistently finds that RTC laws are associated with more violent crime. These findings may seem counterintuitive because concealed-carry permit holders have, as a group, low rates of criminal offending and must pass a background check to ensure that they do not have any condition, such as a felony conviction, that prohibits firearm ownership. But, in states with low standards for legal gun ownership, legal gun owners account for the majority of persons incarcerated for committing violent crimes with firearms

    Efficient nonmeiotic allele introgression in livestock using custom endonucleases

    We have expanded the livestock gene editing toolbox to include transcription activator-like (TAL) effector nuclease (TALEN)- and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9-stimulated homology-directed repair (HDR) using plasmid, rAAV, and oligonucleotide templates. Toward the genetic dehorning of dairy cattle, we introgressed a bovine POLLED allele into horned bull fibroblasts. Single nucleotide alterations or small indels were introduced into 14 additional genes in pig, goat, and cattle fibroblasts using TALEN mRNA and oligonucleotide transfection with efficiencies of 10–50% in populations. Several of the chosen edits mimic naturally occurring performance-enhancing or disease- resistance alleles, including alteration of single base pairs. Up to 70% of the fibroblast colonies propagated without selection harbored the intended edits, of which more than one-half were homozygous. Edited fibroblasts were used to generate pigs with knockout alleles in the DAZL and APC genes to model infertility and colon cancer. Our methods enable unprecedented meiosis-free intraspecific and interspecific introgression of select alleles in livestock for agricultural and biomedical applications

    Clinical implementation of a knowledge based planning tool for prostate VMAT

    Abstract Background A knowledge based planning tool has been developed and implemented for prostate VMAT radiotherapy plans providing a target average rectum dose value based on previously achievable values for similar rectum/PTV overlap. The purpose of this planning tool is to highlight sub-optimal clinical plans and to improve plan quality and consistency. Methods A historical cohort of 97 VMAT prostate plans was interrogated using a RayStation script and used to develop a local model for predicting optimum average rectum dose based on individual anatomy. A preliminary validation study was performed whereby historical plans identified as “optimal” and “sub-optimal” by the local model were replanned in a blinded study by four experienced planners and compared to the original clinical plan to assess whether any improvement in rectum dose was observed. The predictive model was then incorporated into a RayStation script and used as part of the clinical planning process. Planners were asked to use the script during planning to provide a patient specific prediction for optimum average rectum dose and to optimise the plan accordingly. Results Plans identified as “sub-optimal” in the validation study observed a statistically significant improvement in average rectum dose compared to the clinical plan when replanned whereas plans that were identified as “optimal” observed no improvement when replanned. This provided confidence that the local model can identify plans that were suboptimal in terms of rectal sparing. Clinical implementation of the knowledge based planning tool reduced the population-averaged mean rectum dose by 5.6Gy. There was a small but statistically significant increase in total MU and femoral head dose and a reduction in conformity index. These did not affect the clinical acceptability of the plans and no significant changes to other plan quality metrics were observed. Conclusions The knowledge-based planning tool has enabled substantial reductions in population-averaged mean rectum dose for prostate VMAT patients. This suggests plans are improved when planners receive quantitative feedback on plan quality against historical data

    Hot Dust and PAH Emission at Low Metallicity: A Spitzer Survey of Local Group and Other Nearby Dwarf Galaxies

    We present Spitzer Space Telescope 4.5 and 8.0 micron imaging of 15 Local Group and nearby dwarf galaxies. Our sample spans a range of more than one dex in nebular metallicity and over three orders of magnitude in current star formation rate, allowing us to examine the dependence of the diffuse 8 micron emission, originating from hot dust and PAHs, on these parameters. We detect prominent diffuse 8 micron emission in four of the most luminous galaxies in the sample (IC 1613, IC 5152, NGC 55, and NGC 3109), low surface brightness emission from four others (DDO 216, Sextans A, Sextans B, WLM), and no diffuse emission from the remaining objects. We observe general correlations of the diffuse 8 micron emission with both the current star formation rate and the nebular metallicity of the galaxies in our sample. However, we also see exceptions to these correlations that suggest other processes may also have a significant effect on the generation of hot dust/PAH emission. These systems all have evidence for old and intermediate age star formation, thus the lack of diffuse 8 micron emission cannot be attributed to young galaxy ages. Also, we find that winds are unlikely to explain the paucity of diffuse 8 micron emission, since high resolution imaging of the neutral gas in these objects show no evidence of blowout. Additionally, we propose the lack of diffuse 8 micron emission in low-metallicity systems may be due to the destruction of dust grains by supernova shocks, assuming the timescale to regrow dust grains and PAH molecules is long compared to the destruction timescale. The most likely explanation for the observed weak diffuse 8 micron emission is at least partly due to a general absence of dust (including PAHs), in agreement with their low metallicities.Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 26 pages, 8 figures, version with high-resolution figures available at: http://webusers.astro.umn.edu/~djackson
