Surface Modification of Polyethylene with Multi-End-Functional Polyethylene Additives
We have prepared and characterized a series of multifluorocarbon end-functional polyethylene additives, which when blended with polyethylene matrices increase surface hydrophobicity and lipophobicity. Water contact angles of >112° were observed on spin-cast blended film surfaces containing less than 1% fluorocarbon in the bulk, compared to 98° in the absence of any additive. Crystallinity in these films gives rise to surface roughness that is an order of magnitude greater than is typical for amorphous spin-cast films but is too little to give rise to superhydrophobicity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the enrichment of the multifluorocarbon additives at the air surface by up to 80 times the bulk concentration. Ion beam analysis was used to quantify the surface excess of the additives as a function of composition, functionality, and molecular weight of either blend component. In some cases, an excess of the additives was also found at the substrate interface, indicating phase separation into self-stratified layers. The combination of neutron reflectometry and ion beam analysis allowed the surface excess to be quantified above and below the melting point of the blended films. In these films, where the melting temperatures of the additive and matrix components are relatively similar (within 15 °C), the surface excess is almost independent of whether the blended film is semicrystalline or molten, suggesting that the additive undergoes cocrystallization with the matrix when the blended films are allowed to cool below the melting point
Coexistence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic order in Mn-doped NiMnGa
Ni-Mn-Ga is interesting as a prototype of a magnetic shape-memory alloy
showing large magnetic field induced strains. We present here results for the
magnetic ordering of Mn-rich Ni-Mn-Ga alloys based on both experiments and
theory. Experimental trends for the composition dependence of the magnetization
are measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) in magnetic fields of up
to several tesla and at low temperatures. The saturation magnetization has a
maximum near the stoichiometric composition and it decreases with increasing Mn
content. This unexpected behaviour is interpreted via first-principles
calculations within the density-functional theory. We show that extra Mn atoms
are antiferromagnetically aligned to the other moments, which explains the
dependence of the magnetization on composition. In addition, the effect of Mn
doping on the stabilization of the structural phases and on the magnetic
anisotropy energy is demonstrated.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
First-principles study of lattice instabilities in the ferromagnetic martensite NiMnGa
The phonon dispersion relations and elastic constants for ferromagnetic
NiMnGa in the cubic and tetragonally distorted Heusler structures are
computed using density-functional and density-functional perturbation theory
within the spin-polarized generalized-gradient approximation. For
, the TA tranverse acoustic branch along and
symmetry-related directions displays a dynamical instability at a wavevector
that depends on . Through examination of the Fermi-surface nesting and
electron-phonon coupling, this is identified as a Kohn anomaly. In the parent
cubic phase the computed tetragonal shear elastic constant,
C=(CC)/2, is close to zero, indicating a marginal
elastic instability towards a uniform tetragonal distortion. We conclude that
the cubic Heusler structure is unstable against a family of energy-lowering
distortions produced by the coupling between a uniform tetragonal distortion
and the corresponding modulation. The computed relation between the
ratio and the modulation wavevector is in excellent agreement with
structural data on the premartensitic ( = 1) and martensitic ( =
0.94) phases of NiMnGa.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
A small area faint KX redshift survey for QSOs in the ESO Imaging Survey Chandra Deep Field South
In this paper we present preliminary spectroscopic results from a small area
faint K-excess (KX) survey, and compare KX selection against UVX selection. The
aim of the KX method is to produce complete samples of QSOs flux-limited in the
K band, in order to minimize any selection bias in samples of QSOs from the
effects of reddening and extinction. Using the photometric catalogue of the ESO
Imaging Survey Chandra Deep Field South (48 arcmin^2) we have identified
compact objects with J-K colours redder than the stellar sequence, that are
brighter than K=19.5. We have obtained spectra of 33 candidates, using the
LDSS++ spectrograph on the AAT. Amongst the 11 bluer candidates, with V-J<3,
three are confirmed as QSOs. Identification of the 22 redder candidates with
V-J>3 is substantially incomplete, but so far no reddened QSOs have been found.
Near-infrared spectroscopy will be more effective in identifying some of these
targets. Only two UVX (U-B<-0.2) sources brighter than K=19.5 are found which
are not also KX selected. These are both identified as galactic stars. Thus KX
selection appears to select all UVX QSOs. The surface density of QSOs in the
blue subsample (V-J<3) at K<19.5 is 325^+316_-177 deg^-2. Because
identification of the red subsample (V-J>3) is substantially incomplete, the
2sigma upper limit on the density of reddened QSO is large, <1150 deg^-2. As
anticipated, at these faint magnitudes the KX sample includes several compact
galaxies. Of the 14 with measured redshifts, there are roughly equal numbers of
early and late type objects. Nearly all the early type galaxies are found in a

Long-term trends in tropical cyclone tracks around Korea and Japan in late summer and early fall
This study investigates long-term trends in tropical cyclones (TCs) over the extratropical western North Pacific (WNP) over a period of 35 years (1982-2016). The area analyzed extended across 30-45 degrees N and 120-150 degrees E, including the regions of Korea and Japan that were seriously affected by TCs. The northward migration of TCs over the WNP to the mid-latitudes showed a sharp increase in early fall. In addition, the duration of TCs over the WNP that migrated northwards showed an increase, specifically in early to mid-September. Therefore, more recently, TC tracks have been observed to significantly extend into the mid-latitudes. The recent northward extension of TC tracks over the WNP in early fall was observed to be associated with changes in environmental conditions that were favorable for TC activities, including an increase in sea surface temperature (SST), decrease in vertical wind shear, expansion of subtropical highs, strong easterly steering winds, and an increase in relative vorticity. In contrast, northward migrations of TCs to Korea and Japan showed a decline in late August, because of the presence of unfavorable environmental conditions for TC activities. These changes in environmental conditions, such as SST and vertical wind shear, can be partially associated with the Pacific decadal oscillation
Exploring reionization and high-z galaxy observables with recent multiredshift MWA upper limits on the 21-cm signal
We use the latest multiredshift (z = 6.5-8.7) upper limits on the 21-cm signal from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) to explore astrophysical models which are inconsistent with the data. We explore these limits in the context of reionization astrophysics by using 21CMMC to connect the disfavoured regions of parameter space to existing observational constraints on reionization such as high-z galaxy ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions, the background UV photoionization rate, the intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral fraction, the electron scattering optical depth and the soft-band X-ray emissivity. We find the vast majority of disfavoured models to already be inconsistent with existing observational constraints. These can be broadly classified into two types of models: (i) 'cold' reionization and (ii) pure matter density fluctuations in a cold, neutral IGM (i.e. no reionization). Interestingly, a small subsample of models inconsistent with the MWA is consistent with the aforementioned constraints (excluding the X-ray emissivity). This implies that the current MWA limits are already providing unique information to disfavour models of reionization, albeit extremely weakly. We also provide the first limits on the soft-band X-ray emissivity from galaxies at high redshifts, finding 1σ lower limits of X, 0.5-2 keV 1034.5 erg s-1 Mpc-3. Finally, we recover 95 per cent disfavoured limits on the IGM spin temperature of TS 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.8, 2.1, and 2.4 K at z = 6.5, 6.8, 7.1, 7.8, 8.2, and 8.7. With this, we infer the IGM must have undergone, at the very least, a small amount of X-ray heating. Note, the limits on X, 0.5-2 keV and TS are conditional on the IGM neutral fraction
Slater-Pauling Behavior of the Half-Ferromagnetic Full-Heusler Alloys
Using the full-potential screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method we study the
full-Heusler alloys based on Co, Fe, Rh and Ru. We show that many of these
compounds show a half-metallic behavior, however in contrast to the
half-Heusler alloys the energy gap in the minority band is extremely small.
These full-Heusler compounds show a Slater-Pauling behavior and the total
spin-magnetic moment per unit cell (M_t) scales with the total number of
valence electrons (Z_t) following the rule: M_t=Z_t-24. We explain why the
spin-down band contains exactly 12 electrons using arguments based on the group
theory and show that this rule holds also for compounds with less than 24
valence electrons. Finally we discuss the deviations from this rule and the

A demonstration of a service oriented virtual environment for complex system analysis
Distributed virtual simulation is increasingly in demand within the automotive industry. A distributed and networked approach to system level design and simulation stands to benefit from a unifying relational oriented modeling and simulation framework. This will permit innovative use of existing independent simulations for increased concurrency in design and verification and validation. This paper demonstrates an analysis of the vehicle as a complex system through the combination of a relational framework, high level syntax and semantics for representing models and distributed simulation. This promises to provide a rigorous, traceable and agile approach to conceptual vehicle design and analysis
Women, men and coronary heart disease: a review of the qualitative literature
Aim. This paper presents a review of the qualitative literature which examines the experiences of patients with coronary heart disease. The paper also assesses whether the experiences of both female and male patients are reflected in the literature and summarizes key themes.
Background. Understanding patients' experiences of their illness is important for coronary heart disease prevention and education. Qualitative methods are particularly suited to eliciting patients' detailed understandings and perceptions of illness. As much previous research has been 'gender neutral', this review pays particular attention to gender.
Methods. Published papers from 60 qualitative studies were identified for the review through searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PREMEDLINE, PsychINFO, Social Sciences Citation Index and Web of Science using keywords related to coronary heart disease.
Findings. Early qualitative studies of patients with coronary heart disease were conducted almost exclusively with men, and tended to generalize from 'male' experience to 'human' experience. By the late 1990s this pattern had changed, with the majority of studies including women and many being conducted with solely female samples. However, many studies that include both male and female coronary heart disease patients still do not have a specific gender focus. Key themes in the literature include interpreting symptoms and seeking help, belief about coronary 'candidates' and relationships with health professionals. The influence of social roles is important: many female patients have difficulties reconciling family responsibilities and medical advice, while male patients worry about being absent from work.
Conclusions. There is a need for studies that compare the experiences of men and women. There is also an urgent need for work that takes masculinity and gender roles into account when exploring the experiences of men with coronary heart disease
