    Lamin A, a nuclear lamina protein of differentiated cells, is synthesized as a precursor of the mature molecule. Protein sequencing of the carboxyterminal 14 kDa fragment shows a lack of the last 18 residues predicted by cDNA sequencing. The carboxy-terminal proteolytic maturation explains previous biochemical results including the loss of the polyisoprenylation site now located to the CXXM motif at the end of the chain. This view and earlier results on lamin B predict multiple post-translational modifications shared by lamins A and B. While retained by lamin B, which is present in all cells, they are lost by maturation from lamin

    Lamin B purified from murine EAT cells was characterized by partial protein sequences. Contrary to the current view that mammals express only a single lamin B polypeptide corresponding to a characterized murine cDNA clone, our analysis documents two distinct B lamins. One protein follows the estabished cDNA sequence while the other identifies a novel murine lamin B. Comparison with the two chicken lamin B sequences established by cDNA cloning identifies the first murine lamin B sequence as a B1 type and the second as a B2 type.     Unified constitutive models for high-temperature structural applications

    Unified constitutive models are characterized by the use of a single inelastic strain rate term for treating all aspects of inelastic deformation, including plasticity, creep, and stress relaxation under monotonic or cyclic loading. The structure of this class of constitutive theory pertinent for high temperature structural applications is first outlined and discussed. The effectiveness of the unified approach for representing high temperature deformation of Ni-base alloys is then evaluated by extensive comparison of experimental data and predictions of the Bodner-Partom and the Walker models. The use of the unified approach for hot section structural component analyses is demonstrated by applying the Walker model in finite element analyses of a benchmark notch problem and a turbine blade problem

    We demonstrate quantum bath engineering for a superconducting artificial atom coupled to a microwave cavity. By tailoring the spectrum of microwave photon shot noise in the cavity, we create a dissipative environment that autonomously relaxes the atom to an arbitrarily specified coherent superposition of the ground and excited states. In the presence of background thermal excitations, this mechanism increases the state purity and effectively cools the dressed atom state to a low temperature

Occupational safety and health (OSH) is active at all levels of the hierarchy of controls to prevent accidents associated with slips, trips and falls (STF). Training programs related to STF prevention are increasingly supported by virtual reality (VR) techniques. A review revealed a wide range of applications in practical and scientific areas. Trainings for operational practice vary regarding objectives, target groups, application contexts, media, and effectiveness, if available. Trainings in scientific studies are well designed for specific purposes at hand, but not suitable for direct application in operational practice. Research is required to bridge the gap. An investigation on gait stability and control in a VR-based obstacle avoidance training scenario has been conducted to contribute to developments in STF prevention. Initial results indicated a high level of presence and no evidence for detrimental effects on body and gait stability through application of VR techniques. This provides a sound basis for analysis of other data still required and for guiding similar and subsequent studies along knowledge gained by training programs available
