Local Labor Market Conditions and the Jobless Poor: How Much Does Local Job Growth Help in Rural Areas?
The employment outcomes of a group of jobless poor Oregonians are tracked in order to analyze the relative importance of local labor market conditions on their employment outcomes. Local job growth increases the probability that a jobless poor adult will get a job and shortens the length of time until she finds a job. After accounting for both the effects of personal demographic characteristics and local job growth, there is little evidence that the probability of employment or the duration of joblessness differs in rural compared with urban areas.employment, local labor markets, rural labor markets, rural poverty, unemployment, welfare reform, Labor and Human Capital,
EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES FOR LOW-INCOME ADULTS IN RURAL AND URBAN LABOR MARKETS
This study analyzes the impact of local labor market conditions on the probability of employment and duration of employment for low-income adults in Oregon. We find that economic conditions (lower employment growth and higher unemployment rates) help to explain the less successful employment outcomes for low-income adults in non-metro areas.rural labor markets, employment, low-income workers, Labor and Human Capital,
Study of providing omnidirectional vibration isolation to entire space shuttle payload packages
Techniques to provide omnidirectional vibration isolation for a space shuttle payload package were investigated via a reduced-scale model. Development, design, fabrication, assembly and test evaluation of a 0.125-scale isolation model are described. Final drawings for fabricated mechanical components are identified, and prints of all drawings are included
Quantum State Sensitivity of an Autoresonant Superconducting Circuit
When a frequency chirped excitation is applied to a classical high-Q
nonlinear oscillator, its motion becomes dynamically synchronized to the drive
and large oscillation amplitude is observed, provided the drive strength
exceeds the critical threshold for autoresonance. We demonstrate that when such
an oscillator is strongly coupled to a quantized superconducting qubit, both
the effective nonlinearity and the threshold become a non-trivial function of
the qubit-oscillator detuning. Moreover, the autoresonant threshold is
sensitive to the quantum state of the qubit and may be used to realize a high
fidelity, latching readout whose speed is not limited by the oscillator Q.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Morse homology for the heat flow
We use the heat flow on the loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold to
construct an algebraic chain complex. The chain groups are generated by
perturbed closed geodesics. The boundary operator is defined in the spirit of
Floer theory by counting, modulo time shift, heat flow trajectories that
converge asymptotically to nondegenerate closed geodesics of Morse index
difference one.Comment: 89 pages, 3 figure
