A Survey of Hypersonic-Ramjet Concepts
A brief discussion is presented of the major problem areas involved in the development of a hypersonic ramjet engine. Keeping the structural temperature to an acceptably low level is the severest problem expected. A rapid survey is made of some of the relatively unconventional concepts that may find application in the hypersonic region. These include supersonic combustors, underwing burning, atmospheric-recombination, engine installation, nuclear power, variable geometry, and fuel-rich operation

A sampling of probable future engine types, such as convertible engines for helicopters, turboprops for fuel-conservative airliners, and variable-cycle engines for supersonic transports are presented. Related technology improvements in propellers, materials, noise suppression, etc. are reviewed

Supersonic-combustion rocket
A supersonic combustion rocket is provided in which a small rocket motor is substituted for heavy turbo pumps in a conventional rocket engine. The substitution results in a substantial reduction in rocket engine weight. The flame emanating from the small rocket motor can act to ignite non-hypergolic fuels
Interplanetary baseline observations of type 3 solar radio bursts
Simultaneous observations of type III radio bursts using spacecraft separated by several tenths of an AU were made using the solar orbiters HELIOS-A and -B. The burst beginning at 1922 UT on March 28, 1976, was located from the intersection of the source directions measured at each spacecraft, and from the burst arrival time differences. Wide baseline observations give the radial distance of the source at each observing frequency. Consequently, coronal electron densities and exciter velocity were determined directly, without the need to assume a density model as is done with single spacecraft observations. The separation of HELIOS-A and -B also provided the first measurements of burst directivity at low frequencies. For the March 28 burst, the intensity observed from near the source longitude (HELIOS-B) was significantly greater than from 60 W of the source (HELIOS-A)
NASA research activities in aeropropulsion
NASA is responsible for advancing technologies related to air transportation. A sampling of the work at NASA's Lewis Research Center aimed at improved aircraft propulsion systems is described. Particularly stressed are efforts related to reduced noise and fuel consumption of subsonic transports. Generic work in specific disciplines are reviewed including computational analysis, materials, structures, controls, diagnostics, alternative fuels, and high-speed propellers. Prospects for variable cycle engines are also discussed
A Lagrange-D'Alembert formulation of the equations of motion of a helicopter carrying an externally suspended load
The exact nonlinear equations of motion are derived for a helicopter with an extenal load suspended by fore and aft, rigid-link cables. Lagrange's form of D'Alembert's principle is used. Ten degrees of freedom are necessary to represent the motion of this system in an inertial reference frame: six for the helicopter relative to inertial space and four for the load relative to the helicopter
