Risk and Policy Shocks on the US Term Structure
We document two stylised facts of US short- and long-term interest rate data incompatible with the pure expectations hypothesis: Relatively slow adjustment to long-run relations and low contemporaneous correlation. We construct a small structural model which features three types of randomness: While a persistent monetary policy shock implies immediate identical reactions through the term structure, both a transitory policy shock and an autocorrelated risk premium allow for the sustained decoupling observed in the data. Indeed, we find important impacts and persistence of risk premia and a decomposition of policy shocks judging a larger part as transitory the longer the investment horizon.Expectations Hypothesis; Risk Premium; Policy Reaction Function; Persistence; Transitory Shocks
Forman-Ricci flow for change detection in large dynamic data sets
We present a viable solution to the challenging question of change detection
in complex networks inferred from large dynamic data sets. Building on Forman's
discretization of the classical notion of Ricci curvature, we introduce a novel
geometric method to characterize different types of real-world networks with an
emphasis on peer-to-peer networks. Furthermore we adapt the classical Ricci
flow that already proved to be a powerful tool in image processing and
graphics, to the case of undirected and weighted networks. The application of
the proposed method on peer-to-peer networks yields insights into topological
properties and the structure of their underlying data.Comment: Conference paper, accepted at ICICS 2016. (Updated version

empfehlen.480 intravenous glucose tolerance tests (ivGTT) have been carried out on 293
Holstein Friesian bulls aged from 9 20 month in two different artificial
insemination centres. Following parameters were determined, while all bulls
had a 12 21 hours diet by free choose of water intake: the basal glucose and
insulin concentration (G0 and I0), the maximum concentration of glucose and
insulin above the basal level (GMAX and IMAX), the glucose and insulin area
equivalent (GA and IA), half life of glucose (GHWZ) as well as the quotient of
insulin and glucose area equivalent (IA/GA). The aim of the study was to
assess the individual different regulation of testet parameters, the effect of
factors like age, weight, condition and location and repeatability of the
results. Furthermore, in literature described different methods to calculate
half time of glucose should have been compared. Following Burkert (1998), who
showed an interrelation between parameters of insulin reaction, this study
should investigate, whether only one insulin parameter is enough to assess the
insulin reaction. BURKERT (1998) showed in his study bulls with very different
reaction of ivGTT. These special animals were picked out and the results were
examined by repetition of the test. The results are largely common with
literature references, well recapitulate and fundamental influenced by age and
different times without feeding. Significant correlations exist between all
parameters, the differences based on variable ages. 2 to 3 months after the
first examination all results were repeatable. A significant correlation
between all parameters existed. Thereby the difference between the values of
the first and the second study in matched the majority of parameters due to
the age. A significant relation between GA, GHWZ and parameters of insulin
reaction is in the first and second study for a short period. Reason for the
negative correlation between the values of short-dated repetition is the
number of probes (n=20) and the strong influence of the single values. The age
has great influence of the results. Based on the higher fat substance of young
bulls the parameters of insulin reaction grew up, corresponding to
concentration of glucose and half-value time of glucose decreases. This
phenomenon stopped in age-group 3 (over 15 month), even more the back fat
thickness declined. This crease could lead back on the test application of the
bulls for the sperm production which takes place from the age of approximately
one year and represents a sudden load for the breeding bulls. Based on these
results the best examination point would be an age with 12 month, before the
bulls start with the sperm production. Weight and back fat thickness influence
the test results only due to old age. There is no significant correlation
between these factors and test parameters within a close period of age. The
influence of station is mostly caused by different feeding and husbandry.
Therefore it is very important to create standards for examination. The method
from KANEKO (1997) to measure the half-value time of glucose shows the best
agreements with literature, so this is the best propose for the standard
method. It was also examined (also see BURKERT 1998) that there are bulls with
very low or very high insulin response corresponding to changed half-value
time of glucose. In some cases it was possible to repeat these results a
second time, which means that there are bulls with a very divergent
metabolism, but mostly the deviation, was inspired by unknown factors. The
study showed a high correlation between parameters of insulin response. To
reduce the work to describe the insulin reaction with only one measurement; we
assessed the relationship between insulin concentration and moment of taking
the probe as well as parameters of insulin response. All insulin
concentrations had correlation over 0.9 to IA. Because most of the Insulin
peaks fall on the 14th minute p. inj., the insulin concentration at this
moment would be recommended as a parameter for the description of the insulin
reaction
Collective treatment of the giant resonances in spherical nuclei
In a collective treatment the energies of the giant resonances are given by the boundary conditions at the nuclear surface, which is subject to vibration in spherical nuclei. The general form of the coupling between these two collective motions is given by angular-momentum and parity conservation. The coupling constants are completely determined within the hydrodynamical model. In the present treatment the influence of the surface vibrations on the total photon-absorption cross section is calculated. It turns out that in most of the spherical nuclei this interaction leads to a pronounced structure in the cross section. The agreement with the experiments in medium-heavy nuclei is striking; many of the experimental characteristics are reproduced by the present calculations. In some nuclei, however, there seem to be indications of single-particle excitations which are not yet contained in this work
Temperature Based Process Characterization of Pharmaceutical Freeze-Thaw Operations
In biopharmaceutical production processes, freeze-thaw operations are used to ensure product integrity during long hold times, but they also introduce additional stresses such as freeze concentration gradients that might lead to a loss of protein activity. Process characterization of freeze-thaw operations at different scales should be conducted with attention to freezing time and boundary effects to ensure the product stability throughout the process and process development. Currently, process characterization often relies on one or very few temperature probes that detect freezing times based on raw temperature, which is largely influenced by freezing-point depression in case of concentrated solutions. A method to detect freezing based on the second derivative of temperature measurements from Fiber-Bragg-Grating sensors is presented to overcome this issue. The applicability of the method is demonstrated by process characterization of a novel small-scale freeze-thaw device with minimized boundary effects using freezing times of purified water and concentrated formulations. Freezing times varied from 35 to 81 min for temperatures between −60 and −20°C and impacted freeze concentration profiles. Furthermore, freezing time estimations based on the Plank equation revealed model limitations due to start-up temperature gradients, that can be corrected by an empirically extended Plank model. As a hypothesis, we conclude that freezing temperature, from a freeze concentration view, is less important in containers with small characteristic freezing distances such as freeze bags. Using a 2D-resolved temperature profile, a shift of the last point to freeze position from top to bottom of a container was observed when freezing above −30°C
Model-Based Systems Engineering in Mobile Applications
An efficient system development needs reuse, traceability and understanding. Today, specifications are usually written in text documents. Reuse means a copy and paste of suitable specifications. Traceability is the textual note that references to affected requirements. Achieving a full context understanding requires reading hundreds of pages in a variety of documents. Changing one textual requirement in complex systems can be very time-consuming. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) addresses these issues. There, an integrated system model is used for the design, analysis, communication and system specification and shall contribute to handling the system complexity.
This paper shows aspects of this approach in the development of a wheel loader\'s attachment system. Customer requirements will be used to derive a specification model. Based on this, the author introduces the system and software architecture. The connection between requirement and architecture leads to a traceable system design and produces the huge advantage of MBSE
Raman spectroscopy as a process analytical technology to investigate biopharmaceutical freeze concentration processes
Freezing processes are a well-established unit operation in the biopharmaceutical industry to increase the shelf-life of protein-based drugs. While freezing reduces degradation reaction rates, it may also exert stresses such as freeze concentration. Macroscopic freeze concentration in large-scale freezing processes has been described thoroughly by examination of frozen bulk material, but the transient process leading to such freeze concentration profiles has not been monitored yet for biopharmaceutical solutions. In this study, Raman spectroscopy as a process analytical technology is demonstrated for model formulations containing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) or bovine serum albumin (BSA) in varying concentrations of sucrose and buffer salts. Therefore, a Raman probe was immersed into a bulk volume at different heights, monitoring the freeze concentration in the liquid phase during the freezing processes. Partial least square regression models were used to quantitatively discriminate between the protein and excipients simultaneously. The freeze concentration profiles were dependend on freezing temperature and formulation with freeze concentrations up to 2.4-fold. Convection currents at the bottom of the freezing container were observed with a maximum height of 1 mm. Furthermore, freeze concentration was correlated with the sucrose concentration in a formulation. Analysis of the freeze concentration slope indicated diffusion from the bottom to the top of the container. In summary, Raman spectroscopy is a valuable tool for process validation of freeze concentration simulations and to overcome scale-dependent challenges
