Evaluation of the profile and knowledge of dentists from the city of Anapolis (GO) on exfoliative cytology

Método: Foram incluídos no estudo 240 cirurgiões-dentistas, com atuação profissional na cidade de Anápolis (GO), que responderam a um questionário auto-aplicável, com perguntas abertas e fechadas, previamente testado, contendo questões demográficas e relacionadas ao conhecimento e utilização da técnica de citologia esfoliativa. Após o preenchimento do questionário, foi entregue ao profissional um manual com informações sobre a técnica a fim de esclarecer quaisquer dúvidas sobre este importante exame complementar de diagnóstico. Em seguida os dados foram analisados estatisticamente (Qui-quadrado, Kruskal Wallis ao nível de 5%). Resultados e Conclusão: a) Cirurgiões-dentistas da cidade de Anápolis (GO) possuem conhecimento insuficiente sobre a técnica da citologia esfoliativa, mas reconhecem de maneira satisfatória as patologias em que a citologia pode ser aplicada; b) Indivíduos que realizam cirurgia e implantodontia relataram mais conhecimento de citologia que aqueles que realizam ortodontia; c) Indivíduos com cursos de atualização ou especialização relataram tanto conhecimento sobre citologia quanto aqueles sem pós-graduação, e mostraram menor conhecimento quanto ao fixador utilizado; d) Divulgação da técnica de citologia, assim como de métodos de prevenção e de diagnóstico precoce de doenças bucais, são necessários.Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the profile and knowledge that dentists in the city of Anápolis (GO), Brazil, have of exfoliative cytology and of the applicability of the method for the diagnosis of various diseases that affect the oral cavity, as well as to disseminate information regarding exfoliative cytology. Method: A total of 240 dentists who worked in Anápolis (GO), Brazil, were included in the present study. The dentists completed a previously tested self-administered questionnaire containing open and closed questions regarding demographic data, the knowledge of exfoliative cytology, and the knowledge of the use of this technique. After completing the questionnaire, the dentists received a manual containing information about exfoliative cytology in order to clarify doubts regarding this important complementary test. The data obtained were statistically analyzed by means of the chi-square or Kruskal Wallis test, at a significance level of 5%. Results and conclusion: a) Dentists in Anápolis (GO), Brazil, have little knowledge of exfoliative cytology. However, they can satisfactorily recognize the cases in which the technique can be used; b) Dentists who specialize in surgery and implants reported greater knowledge of the technique than did those who specialize in orthodontics; c) Dentists who had a specialist degree reported as much knowledge of the technique as did those who had only an undergraduate degree; in addition, the latter had greater knowledge of the fixing agent used; and d) Information regarding exfoliative cytology and the methods for the prevention or early diagnosis of oral diseases must be disseminated.Mestre em Odontologi

Evaluation of dentists' knowledge of the use of oral exfoliative cytology in clinical practice

Oral exfoliative cytology (EC) is a rapid and practical complementary test that can be used in the diagnosis of various diseases. The objectives of this study were to assess dentists'knowledge of EC and to disseminate information on the technique. The study included 240 dentists from the city of Anapolis (Goias, Brazil) who answered a questionnaire regarding demographic data and data relating to EC and who then received information on the technique. The data revealed that 26.92% of the dentists did not know about EC. Among those who reported knowledge of EC, 33.91% did not know the procedures for performing the technique, and 85.38% had no experience with EC. In addition, 54.09% of the answers regarding the instrument used to collect the material and 56.82% of the answers concerning suitable fixatives were inappropriate. Although 73.02% of the dentists adequately identified the pathologies for which EC is recommended, it was concluded that the respondents had poor knowledge of EC. There is a need to increase dentists'awareness of this subject and of EC's use in diagnostic practices

O texto apresenta a dimensão sociológica do pensamento de Theodor Adorno e a sua análise crítica dirigida à escola e ao sistema de ensino, destacando sua atualidade. Retoma-se, também, a discussão sobre a educação para a "emancipação", segundo o teórico, procurando demonstrar que o desafio apontado por ele, para que a Educação possa ser capaz de criar a base para a construção de uma sociedade livre da barbárie, continua atual. Transportada para os desafios que se colocam para a Educação, no atual cenário do neoliberalismo globalizado e de suas contradições, a apropriação do potencial da epistemologia de Adorno torna-se fundamental ao debate da relação entre a escola e a sociedade no mundo contemporâneo, evidenciando como o seu pensamento reforça posturas que, na contemporaneidade, tributam à escola um papel importante na construção de novas relações pedagógicas, orientadas para a produção de novas formas de cidadania, visando construir um mundo no qual se possa viver com justiça e dignidade.<br>The text presents the sociological dimension of the thought of Theodor Adorno and his critical analyses pointed to the school and to the educational system, highlighting how it is up-to-date. It also comes back to the discussion of Adorno about education for the emancipation and it shows that the challenge pointed by him for the education to be capable of creating the foundations for the construction of a society free from barbarism continues to be present. Transferred to the challenges that lay ahead for education, in the present scenery of the global new liberalism and its contradictions, the appropriation of the potential of the epistemology of Adorno becomes fundamental in the debate about the relation between the school and the society in the contemporary world, showing how his knowledge reinforces postures that, in the present, demand from the school an important role in the construction of new pedagogical relations for the production of new forms of citizenship looking to construct a world in which it is possible to live with justice and dignity
