On the area of the symmetry orbits in symmetric spacetimes with Vlasov matter
This paper treats the global existence question for a collection of general
relativistic collisionless particles, all having the same mass. The spacetimes
considered are globally hyperbolic, with Cauchy surface a 3-torus. Furthermore,
the spacetimes considered are isometrically invariant under a two-dimensional
group action, the orbits of which are spacelike 2-tori. It is known from
previous work that the area of the group orbits serves as a global time
coordinate. In the present work it is shown that the area takes on all positive

Crucial cross-talk of interleukin-1β and progesterone in human choriocarcinoma

This article can be accessed from the links below.This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Choriocarcinoma is a highly malignant epithelial tumour that is most often associated with hydatidiform mole and presents the most common emergency medical problem in the management of trophoblast disease. We hypothesise that the hormones/cytokines present within the tumour microenvironment play key roles in the development of choriocarcinoma. In this study we assessed the effects of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) on cell death in the presence or absence of the sex hormone progesterone using two choriocarcinoma cell lines (BeWo and JEG-3) as in vitro experimental models. Although IL-1β induced cell death in both cell lines, the effect was more pronounced in JEG-3 cells, where cell death reached 40% compared to 15% in BeWo cells. Cell death of JEG-3 cells in response to IL-1β was significantly decreased by co-treatment with 100 nM and 1000 nM progesterone and completely abolished at a progesterone concentration of 1000 nM. Progesterone was also able to induce phosphorylation of ERK1/2 in these cells. Pretreatment of JEG-3 cells with a specific MAPK inhibitor (UO126) inhibited progesterone's inhibitory effect on cell death. Collectively, these data provide evidence of cross-talk between progesterone and IL-1β in this aggressive and poorly understood tumour that involves activation of a MAPK pathway and involvement of numerous progesterone receptors.This research was funded by a National Institutes of Health Grant ESO12961. Energy Spectrum Evolution of a Diffuse Field in Elastic Body Caused by Weak Nonlinearity
We study the evolution of diffuse elastodynamic spectral energy density under
the influence of weak nonlinearity. It is shown that the rate of change of this

Thermal analysis of submicron nanocrystalline diamond films
The thermal properties of sub-μm nanocrystalline diamond films in the range of 0.37–1.1 μm grown by hot filament CVD, initiated by bias enhanced nucleation on a nm-thin Si-nucleation layer on various substrates, have been characterized by scanning thermal microscopy. After coalescence, the films have been outgrown with a columnar grain structure. The results indicate that even in the sub-μm range, the average thermal conductivity of these NCD films approaches 400 W m− 1 K− 1. By patterning the films into membranes and step-like mesas, the lateral component and the vertical component of the thermal conductivity, k<sub>lateral</sub> and k<sub>vertical</sub>, have been isolated showing an anisotropy between vertical conduction along the columns, with k<sub>vertical</sub> ≈ 1000 W m− 1 K− 1, and a weaker lateral conduction across the columns, with k<sub>lateral</sub> ≈ 300 W m− 1 K− 1
Role of oxygen in the electron-doped superconducting cuprates
We report on resistivity and Hall measurements in thin films of the
electron-doped superconducting cuprate PrCeCuO.
Comparisons between x = 0.17 samples subjected to either ion-irradiation or
oxygenation demonstrate that changing the oxygen content has two separable
effects: 1) a doping effect similar to that of cerium, and 2) a disorder
effect. These results are consistent with prior speculations that apical oxygen
removal is necessary to achieve superconductivity in this compound.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
