    Solaris Storage Ring Lattice Optimization with Strong Insertion Devices

    The Solaris synchrotron radiation facility under construction in Krakow will be a replica of the 1.5 GeV storage ring of MAX IV. This compact 3rd generation light source has been designed to have an emittance of 6 nm rad and operate with 500 mA stored current for VUV and and soft X-ray production.The lattice consists of 12 double- bend achromats (DBA) where each DBA cell is integrated into one solid iron block. Twelve 3.5 m long straight sections are available of which 10 will be equipped with various insertion devices. These devices will differ from those adopted by MAX IV. For X-ray production one or more superconducting wigglers will be used, while APPLE-II type undulators will be used for variable polarised light production. The linear and nonlinear beam dynamics have been studied with these perturbing insertion devices included in the lattice and results are presented in this paper

    Who Cares for Families? Narrative(s) of Return in Postsocialist Europe

    The introduction to the special section “Who Cares for Families? Narrative(s) of Return in Postsocialist Europe” identifies and analyzes its core concept—the narrative of return. Families of today are talked about differently, and how they are narrativized matters. The narrative that stresses that family is under threat and in need of defense or a special form of care, figuring care as restitution of natural, traditional, or family proper, is termed the narrative of return. The trope of return is strongly normative and non-descriptive, as it relies on mythical temporalities that ought to be restored in our present. The article first defines the choice of concepts—narrative, return, care, and threat. Second, it applies this conceptual frame in the transnational context, particularly within the transnational anti-gender campaigns in the populist moment. Third, it focuses on the postsocialist part of Europe, where, as the entire special section aims to demonstrate, the narrative of return gained particular currency. In Eastern Europe, these narratives are integral to larger projects of restoration of national agenda and serve as a tool of double emancipation: from the Soviet past and from the European Union present. Political actors using narrative(s) of return advocate and successfully push through fundamental changes in the political frameworks and value systems of the postsocialist countries. The project is based on an identical copy of the 1.5 GeV storage ring being concurrently built for the MAX IV project in Lund, Sweden. A general description of the facility is given together with a status of activities.     Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    Solaris is a third generation light source built and commissioned at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. It is a replica of the MAX IV 1.5 GeV storage ring and part of its injector. The commissioning of the storage ring started in May 2015. First light at the bending magnet beamline front end was observed after two weeks of optimisation. After one year of commissioning excellent performance of the Solaris synchrotron has been achieved. Injection into the storage ring occurs at the designed electron energy of 525 MeV, next the beam is ramped to the final energy of 1.5 GeV. Beam optics has been adjusted to be close to the design one. Solaris is operating at a working point of (11.22, 3.15) and with a corrected chromaticity of (+0.93, +0.91). Recently over 600 mA of beam current was stored for injection energy. The vacuum system of the storage ring is still being conditioned. After about 90 A.h of beam cleaning dose the total beam lifetime at 100 mA is approaching 11 h at 1.5 GeV. So far two beamlines have been constructed. The UV angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (UARPES) beamline with a photon energy range from 8 eV to 100 eV, is in commissioning since April 2016 and the soft X-ray spectroscopy dedicated PEEM/XAS beamline from a bending magnet source, which is at the end of its installation phase.     Polymorphism of chiral thioester studied by dielectric spectroscopy

    (S)-(+)-4'-[(4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonylphenyl) thiocarbonylphenyl]-decyloxybenzoate (in short 10.OPOSMH) was studied by complementary methods. The substance shows rich polymorphism. In addition to ferroelectric and antiferroelectric smectic C^{*} phases it possesses three ferrielectric sub-phases. Phase transitions between the phases were revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and static dielectric permittivity measurements. The aim of this paper was to study phase transitions and differences in dielectric spectra shown by different phases. Collective and molecular dynamics of all phases shown by 10.OPOSMH will be discussed in terms of theoretical models. Dielectric spectra of antiferroelectric phase show two characteristic dielectric relaxation modes: one connected with the molecular process (reorientation around the short axis) and the other originating from fluctuations of antiferroelectric order parameters

    The MAX IV Facility

    The MAX IV synchrotron radiation facility is currently being constructed in Lund, Sweden. The accelerator park consists of a 3 GeV linac injector and 2 storage rings operated at 1.5 and 3 GeV respectively. The linac injector will also be used for the generation of short Xray pulses. Close to 30 straight sections will be available for IDs at the rings. The three machines mentioned above are described below with some emphasis on the effort to create a very small emittance in the 3 GeV ring. Some unconventional technical solutions imposed by the emittance minimisation are discussed
