    Fluctuation Analysis of Human Electroencephalogram

    The scaling behaviors of the human electroencephalogram (EEG) time series are studied using detrended fluctuation analysis. Two scaling regions are found in nearly every channel for all subjects examined. The scatter plot of the scaling exponents for all channels (up to 129) reveals the complicated structure of a subject's brain activity. Moment analyses are performed to extract the gross features of all the scaling exponents, and another universal scaling behavior is identified.     A high frequency search for radio pulsars in EGRET error boxes

    We present a new survey for pulsars in the error boxes of the low-latitude EGRET sources 3EG J1027-5817, 3EG J1800-2338 and 3EG J1810-1032. Although all of these sources have been covered by previous pulsar surveys, the recent discovery of the young, energetic pulsar PSR J1410-6132 at 6.7 GHz has shown that pulsars of this type can be hidden from low frequency surveys. Using an observing frequency of 3.1 GHz we discovered a 91-ms pulsar, PSR J1028-5819, which observations made at the Parkes telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array have shown to be young and energetic. We believe this pulsar is likely to be powering the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1027-5817. Like other energetic pulsars, PSR J1028-5819 is highly linearly polarised, but astonishingly has a pulse duty cycle of only 0.4%, one of the smallest in the entire pulsar catalogue.Comment: For publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ

    Using airborne LiDAR Survey to explore historic-era archaeological landscapes of Montserrat in the eastern Caribbean

    This article describes what appears to be the first archaeological application of airborne LiDAR survey to historic-era landscapes in the Caribbean archipelago, on the island of Montserrat. LiDAR is proving invaluable in extending the reach of traditional pedestrian survey into less favorable areas, such as those covered by dense neotropical forest and by ashfall from the past two decades of active eruptions by the Soufrière Hills volcano, and to sites in localities that are inaccessible on account of volcanic dangers. Emphasis is placed on two aspects of the research: first, the importance of ongoing, real-time interaction between the LiDAR analyst and the archaeological team in the field; and second, the advantages of exploiting the full potential of the three-dimensional LiDAR point cloud data for purposes of the visualization of archaeological sites and features

    Egg development, hatching rhythm and moult patterns in Paralomos spinosissima (Decapoda: Anomura: Paguroidea: Lithodidae) from South Georgia waters (Southern Ocean)

    Larval release, hatching rhythms and moult patterns were examined in a captive population of the subantarctic lithodid, Paralomis spinosissima from the South Georgia and Shag Rocks region. Larvae hatched throughout the year with the majority of females starting to release larvae at the end of the austral summer and beginning of autumn. Larval release continued over a period of up to 9 weeks with high variability in the numbers that hatched each day. A similar seasonal pattern to hatching was evident in the moulting of females. Intermoult period for two adult females (CL = 63 and 85 mm) ranged from 894 to 1,120 days while an intermoult period for males was estimated to be in excess of 832 days. The results are consistent with other species of Paralomis and are discussed in relation to physiological and environmental adaptations to the cold-water conditions south of the Antarctic Convergence

    Loss of heterozygosity on chromosomes 11 and 17 are markers of recurrence in TCC of the bladder

    Approximately 2/3 of patients diagnosed with superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder (TCC) will recur within 2 years. Loss of chromosome 9 and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at 9q34 in index TCCs identify a subset of patients at high risk of recurrence. This study explores genetic alterations on chromosomes 4, 8, 11 and 17 as predictors of recurrence. A total of 109 carcinomas were investigated at 26 loci. DNA was extracted from microdissected archival normal/tumour tissue and was analysed for loss of heterozygosity (LOH). Fluorescent PCR was performed and genotyping carried out on a Perkin Elmer ABI377 sequencer. LOH of D11S490 or D17S928 was significantly more frequent in index carcinomas of patients who experienced recurrence compared to those with no recurrence (P = 0.004 and 0.019 respectively). These results suggest that loss of these regions is associated with recurrence of TCC. Further investigation is required to identify genes in these regions, which might be responsible for driving recurrence in TCC of the urinary bladder. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

    Is chromosome 9 loss a marker of disease recurrence in transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder?

    Investigation of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder (TCC) patients classified by recurrence and/or progression has demonstrated that loss of chromosome 9, as detected by FISH analysis of the pericentromeric classical satellite marker at 9q12, occurs early. A total of 105 TCCs from 53 patients were analysed in situ by two independent observers for loss of chromosome 9 using quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). All 53 primary tumours were evaluated for chromosomes 9, 7 and 17. Normal ranges for chromosomal copy number were defined for normal skin epidermis and bladder epithelium. Values for chromosome 9 copy number outwith the range 1.51-2.10 (mean +/- 3 x s.d. of normal values) were significantly abnormal. Twenty-five TCCs were detected with consistent monosomic scores. Of 89 TCCs, in which multiple tumour areas were analysed, 85 tumours (96%) demonstrated the same chromosome 9 copy number in all areas (2-6) analysed; only three tumours demonstrated heterogeneity for this locus. A total of 36% (12 out of 33) of patients with subsequent disease recurrence demonstrated loss of chromosome 9 in their primary and all subsequent TCCs analysed. Only a single patient (n = 20) with non-recurrent TCC showed loss of chromosome 9 (P = 0.0085). Of 53 primary tumours, eight showed significant elevation of chromosome 17. Of these patients, six demonstrated elevation in chromosome 7 copy number. No abnormalities were observed in non-recurrent patients. This study describes rapid quantitation of chromosomal copy number by FISH using a pericentromeric probe for chromosome 9 in TCC of the urinary bladder. Routinely fixed and processed material was evaluated without disaggregation. Strict quality control of FISH demonstrated that this technique was reproducible in a clinical environment and could be used to detect genetic changes relevant to patient outcome.     Evaluation of an International Entrepreneur Exchange Program: Impacts, Lessons Learned, and Implications for Agricultural Development

    This study evaluated a two-way, visitor exchange project for entrepreneurship development between three African countries and the United States. The study’s purpose was to determine outcomes, understand lessons learned, and derive implications for international agricultural development. Findings of the study confirm visiting African Entrepreneur Fellows (AEFs) developed entrepreneurial knowledge, gained business skills, and acquired positive attitudes toward U.S. business and culture. The majority of AEFs had applied acquired knowledge and skills to improve their businesses and promoted open economic ideals, business ethics, and human rights in their businesses. As a result, AEFs were able to expand their business into new ventures, improve customer services, establish communication networks, and serve their communities. Visitor exchange, entrepreneurship-building programs are effective strategies in contributing to development efforts in developing countries. Paying due attention to the selection and matching of U.S. mentors with the business interests and learning needs of international fellows is necessary to ensure their learning expectations are met. It is important to assign international participants with suitable mentors for longer periods of time to increase the likelihood of receiving more in-depth learning experiences and develop lasting professional relationships to further collaboration. Realization of the potential of entrepreneurship-focused, visitor exchange programs between nations as a strategy for international agricultural development is the major implication of this study

    Pulsar Timing with the Parkes Radio Telescope for the Fermi Mission

    We report here on two years of timing of 168 pulsars using the Parkes radio telescope. The vast majority of these pulsars have spin-down luminosities in excess of 10^34 erg/s and are prime target candidates to be detected in gamma-rays by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. We provide the ephemerides for the ten pulsars being timed at Parkes which have been detected by Fermi in its first year of operation. These ephemerides, in conjunction with the publicly available photon list, can be used to generate gamma-ray profiles from the Fermi archive. We will make the ephemerides of any pulsars of interest available to the community upon request. In addition to the timing ephemerides, we present the parameters for 14 glitches which have occurred in 13 pulsars, seven of which have no previously known glitch history.     Genetic aberrations of c-myc and CCND1 in the development of invasive bladder cancer

    Detrusor muscle invasive transitional cell carcinoma is associated with poor prognosis and is responsible for the majority of bladder cancer related deaths. Amplifications of c-myc and CCND1 are associated with detrusor-muscle-invasive transitional cell carcinoma, however, their precise role in driving disease progression is unclear. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation on archival tissue from 16 patients with primary diagnosis of ⩾pT2 transitional cell carcinoma and 15 cases with primary pTa/pT1 disease subsequently progressing to detrusor-muscle-invasion was performed, in the latter group both pre and post muscle invasive events were studied. No patients presenting with ⩾pT2 had amplification of c-myc, two out of 16 (12.5%) had CCND1 amplification. Of patients who developed ⩾pT2, two out of 15 (13.3%) had amplification of c-myc, both in ⩾pT2, five out of 15 (33.3%) had CCND1 amplification, two in pTa/pT1 tumours, three in ⩾pT2 transitional cell carcinomas. In total, two out of 31 (6.5%) of patients' ⩾pT2 TCCs were amplified for c-myc and six out of 31 (19%) were amplified for CCND1. Eighty-seven per cent (40 out of 46) of tumours were polysomic for chromosome 8 and 80% (37 out of 46) were polysomic for chromosome 11 and this reflected the high copy numbers of c-myc and CCND1 observed. In almost all cases an increase in c-myc/CCND1 copy number occurred prior to invasion and persisted in advanced disease. Amplification of CCND1 or alterations in c-myc/CCND1 early in bladder cancer may have clinical relevance in promoting and predicting progression to detrusor-muscle-invasive transitional cell carcinoma

    The Contribution of Fermi Gamma-Ray Pulsars to the local Flux of Cosmic-Ray Electrons and Positrons

    We analyze the contribution of gamma-ray pulsars from the first Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalogue to the local flux of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons (e+e-). We present new distance estimates for all Fermi gamma-ray pulsars, based on the measured gamma-ray flux and pulse shape. We then estimate the contribution of gamma-ray pulsars to the local e+e- flux, in the context of a simple model for the pulsar e+e- emission. We find that 10 of the Fermi pulsars potentially contribute significantly to the measured e+e- flux in the energy range between 100 GeV and 1 TeV. Of the 10 pulsars, 2 are old EGRET gamma-ray pulsars, 2 pulsars were discovered with radio ephemerides, and 6 were discovered with the Fermi pulsar blind-search campaign. We argue that known radio pulsars fall in regions of parameter space where the e+e- contribution is predicted to be typically much smaller than from those regions where Fermi-LAT pulsars exist. However, comparing the Fermi gamma-ray flux sensitivity to the regions of pulsar parameter space where a significant e+e- contribution is predicted, we find that a few known radio pulsars that have not yet been detected by Fermi can also significantly contribute to the local e+e- flux if (i) they are closer than 2 kpc, and if (ii) they have a characteristic age on the order of one mega-year.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in JCA
