    Climate variability and El Niño Southern Oscillation: implications for natural coastal resources and management

    The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) significantly influences marine ecosystems and the sustained exploitation of marine resources in the coastal zone of the Humboldt Current upwelling system. Both its warm (El Niño: EN) and cold (La Niña: LN) phase have drastic implications for the ecology, socio-economy and infrastructure along most of PaciWc South America. Local artisanal fisheries, which especially suffer from the effects of EN, represent a major part for the domestic economy of Chile and Peru and in consequence a huge amount of published and unpublished studies exists aiming at identifying effects of EN and LN. However, most processes and underlying mechanisms fostering the ecology of organisms along Pacific South America have not been analyzed yet and for the marine realm most knowledge is traditionally based on rather descriptive approaches. We herein advocate that small-scale comparative and interdisciplinary process studies work as one possible solution to understand better the variability observed in EN/LN effects at local scale. We propose that differences in small-scale impacts of ENSO along the coast rather than the macro-ecological and oceanographic view are essential for the sustainable management of costal ecosystems and the livelihood of the people depending on it. Based on this, we summarize the conceptual approach from the EU-funded International Science and Technology Cooperation (INCO) project “Climate variability and El Niño Southern Oscillation: Implications for Natural Coastal Resources and Management (CENSOR)” that aims at enhancing the detection, compilation, and understanding of EN and LN effects on the coastal zone and its natural resources. We promote a multidisciplinary avenue within present international funding schemes, with the intention to bridge the traditional gap between basic and applied coastal research. The long-term aim is an increased mitigation of harm caused by EN as well as a better use of beneficial effects, with the possibility to improve the livelihood of human coastal populations along Pacific South America and taking differences between local socio-economic structures of the countries affected by EN into consideration. The success of such an approach however, does finally rely upon a willingness of the recourse users and the various political and economic stakeholders involved to taking on the message as part of sustainable management strategies

    Early egg traits in Cancer setosus (Decapoda, Brachyura): effects of temperature and female size

    Previous study on Cancer setosus (Molina, 1782) had shown that latitudinal changes in temperature control the number of annual egg masses. This study focused on the effects of pre-oviposition temperature and female size on egg-traits in C. setosus from Northern (Antofagasta 23ºS) and Central-Southern (Puerto Montt 41ºS) Chile. Blastula eggs produced in nature ranged in dry mass (DM) from 9.1 to 15.1 µg, in carbon (C) from 4.8 to 8.4 µg, in nitrogen (N) from 1.0 to 1.6 µg, in C:N ratio between 4.7 and 5.4, and in volume (V) between 152 and 276 mm3 x 10-4 per female. Blastula eggs from females caught early in the reproductive season in Puerto Montt (09/2006) were significantly higher in DM, C, N, and V than those of females caught two months later (11/2006), reflecting a seasonal increase in water temperature. In Puerto Montt “early” and “late” season blastula eggs were about 32% and 20% higher in DM, C, N, and V as eggs from Antofagasta, respectively. Subsequent egg masses produced in captivity in Puerto Montt followed this pattern of smaller eggs with lower DM, C, and N content at higher pre-oviposition temperatures. In Antofagasta no significant difference in DM, C, N and V between eggs produced in nature and subsequent eggs produced in captivity was found and all egg traits were significantly positively affected by maternal size. Reproductive plasticity in C. setosus helps explaining the species wide latitudinal distribution range

    Egg development, hatching rhythm and moult patterns in Paralomos spinosissima (Decapoda: Anomura: Paguroidea: Lithodidae) from South Georgia waters (Southern Ocean)

    Larval release, hatching rhythms and moult patterns were examined in a captive population of the subantarctic lithodid, Paralomis spinosissima from the South Georgia and Shag Rocks region. Larvae hatched throughout the year with the majority of females starting to release larvae at the end of the austral summer and beginning of autumn. Larval release continued over a period of up to 9 weeks with high variability in the numbers that hatched each day. A similar seasonal pattern to hatching was evident in the moulting of females. Intermoult period for two adult females (CL = 63 and 85 mm) ranged from 894 to 1,120 days while an intermoult period for males was estimated to be in excess of 832 days. The results are consistent with other species of Paralomis and are discussed in relation to physiological and environmental adaptations to the cold-water conditions south of the Antarctic Convergence

    First year growth in the lithodids Lithodes santolla and Paralomis granulosa reared at different temperatures

    The southern king crab, Lithodes santolla Molina, and stone crab, Paralomis granulosa Jacquinot, inhabit the cold-temperate waters of southernmost South America (southern Chile and Argentina), where stocks of both species are endangered by overfishing. Recent investigations have shown that these crabs show life-cycle adaptations to scarcity of food and low temperatures prevailing in subantarctic regions, including complete lecithotrophy of all larval stages and prolonged periods of brooding and longevity. However, growth and development to maturity are slow under conditions of low temperatures, which may explain the particular vulnerability of subpolar lithodids to fisheries. In the present study, juvenile L. santolla and P. granulosa were individually reared in the laboratory at constant temperatures ranging from 3–15 °C, and rates of survival and development through successive instars were monitored throughout a period of about nine months from hatching. When the experiments were terminated, L. santolla had maximally reached juvenile instar IV (at 6 °C), V (9 °C), or VII (15 °C). In P. granulosa the maximum crab instar reached was II (at 3 °C), V (6 °C), V (9 °C), or VII (15 °C). The intermoult period decreased with increasing temperature, while it increased in successively later instars. In consequence, growth rate showed highly significant differences among temperatures (P<0.001). Growth-at-moult was highest at 9 °C. Rates of survival decreased significantly in juvenile P. granulosa with increasing temperature. Only at 15 °C in L. santolla, was a significantly enhanced mortality found compared with lower temperatures. Our results indicate that juvenile stages of L. santolla and P. granulosa are well adapted to 5–10°C, the range of temperatures typically prevailing in subantarctic marine environments. In spite of causing higher mortality rates, higher rearing temperatures (12–15 °C) should accelerate the rates of growth and maturation, which may be favourable for projects aiming at aquaculture or repopulation of overexploited king crab stocks

    Distribution and composition of macrobenthic communities along a Victoria-Land Transect (Ross Sea, Antarctica)

    The Victoria-Land Transect project onboard the Italian research vessel ‘‘Italica’’ in February 2004, was a large-scale attempt to obtain benthic samples of smaller macrozoobenthic specimens systematically along a latitudinal and a depth transect along the Victoria- Land coast. Data presented from this survey are based on Rauschert dredge samples, which were taken at four areas at depth ranging from 84 to 515 m. A cluster analysis based on relative numbers of abundance was performed and demonstrated a change in community structure depending on the location along the latitudinal transect. A change in community structure with depth was not recorded. Dominant taxa of the Ross Sea fauna along the Victoria-Land coast were the Arthropoda (65.7%), followed by Annelida (20.7%), Mollusca (9.6%) and Echinodermata (2.5%). Total number of abundance decreased with depth with an exception at Cape Russell, whereas a trend in biomass was not documented. Abundance and biomass proportions of major taxa changed gradually along the latitudinal transect

    Larval stages of Chorismus tuberculatus (Decapoda: Caridea: Hippolytidae) from the south-western Atlantic Ocean

    Larval development of Capitulum mitella (Cirripedia: Pedunculata) comprises six nauplius stages and a cyprid. Unilobed labrum, a larval trait of pedunculate and chthamalid barnacles, bears two groups of slender hairs and two pairs of strong teeth on the distal labral margin, and a pair of teeth on the lateral labral margin. Frontolateral horns extended under the anterior cephalic shield margin are diagnostic features through all nauplius stages. The posterior border of the cephalic shield bears a pair of distal cephalic shield spines in nauplius stages II and III, and a pair of long posterior shield spines in nauplius stages IV, V and VI. A hispid seta is consistently found at the fourth group of the antennal endopodite through stages II–VI. The dorsal thoracic spine, abdominal process and the paired posterior shield spines have numerous small spines. Morphological features such as the cephalic shield, labrum, abdominal process, antennules, antennae and mandibles in all nauplius and cyprid stages are illustrated and described. In this species, the numerical setations of the antennule are found to be beneficial for intra-specific identification of barnacle nauplius stages without the need for dissection.<br/

    Comparison of heat-shock responses between the hydrothermal vent shrimp Rimicaris exoculata and the related coastal shrimp Palaemonetes varians

    The deep-sea vent shrimp Rimicaris exoculata is believed to occur at the hot end of the hydrothermal biotope in order to provide essential elements to its epibiosis. Because it is found close to hot venting water, R. exoculata lives in a highly fluctuating environment where temperature (2–40 °C in the swarms) can exceed its critical maximal temperature (33–38.5 ± 2 °C). In order to understand how this vent shrimp copes with hyperthermia, we compared its molecular heat stress response following an acute but non-lethal heat-shock (1 h at 30 °C) with that of its monophyletic shallow-water relative, the shrimp Palaemonetes varians, known to frequently undergo prolonged exposure at temperatures up to 30 °C in its natural environment during summer. We isolated four isoforms of heat-shock proteins 70 (HSP70) in R. exoculata (2 constitutive and 2 inducible isoforms) and two isoforms in P. varians (1 constitutive and 1 inducible isoform) and quantitatively compared their magnitude of induction at mRNA level, using real-time PCR, in the case of experimentally heat-stressed shrimps, with respect to control (unstressed) animals. Here, we report the first quantification of the expression of multiple hsp70 genes following heat stress in a deep-sea vent species living at 2300 m depth. Our results show a strong increase of hsp70 inducible genes in the vent shrimp (not, vert, similar 400-fold) compared to the coastal shrimp (not, vert, similar 15-fold). We therefore propose that, the highly inducible molecular response observed in R. exoculata may contribute to the ability of this species to tolerate thermal extremes

    Metabolic rate and growth in the temperate bivalve Mercenaria mercenaria at a biogeographic limit, from the English Channel

    Metabolism and growth rate of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria, were investigated in a population invasive to Southampton Water, southern England. An individual metabolic model expressed as a function of soft tissue dry mass was fitted to data of 18 individuals (log (VO2) = −1.952 + 0.543 • log (DM); F1,16 = 201.18, P &lt; 0.001, r2 = 0.926). A von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to 227 size-at-age data pairs of 18 individuals (Ht = 80.13 • (1 − e−0.149 • (t−0.542)); r2 = 0.927). Individual age-specific somatic production was calculated, demonstrating increase with age to a maximum of 3.88 kJ y−1 at ten years old followed by decrease, and individual age-specific annual respiration was calculated, demonstrating asymptotic increase with age to 231.37 kJ y−1 at 30 years old. Results found here lie within the physiological tolerances reported across the biogeographical range, suggesting that the species' biogeographical limitation in the UK to Southampton Water results from ecological rather than physiological factors
