Probing the gluon self-interaction in light mesons
We investigate masses and decay constants of light mesons from a coupled
system of Dyson--Schwinger and Bethe--Salpeter equations. We explicitly take
into account dominant non-Abelian contributions to the dressed quark-gluon
vertex stemming from the gluon self-interaction. We construct the corresponding
Bethe-Salpeter kernel that satisfies the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity.
Our numerical treatment fully includes all momentum dependencies with all
equations solved completely in the complex plane. This approach goes well
beyond the rainbow-ladder approximation and permits us to investigate the
influence of the gluon self-interaction on the properties of mesons. As a first
result we find indications of a nonperturbative cancellation of the gluon
self-interaction contributions and pion cloud effects in the mass of the

Probing Unquenching Effects in the Gluon Polarisation in Light Mesons
We introduce an extension to the ladder truncated Bethe-Salpeter equation for
mesons and the rainbow truncated quark Dyson-Schwinger equations which includes
quark-loop corrections to the gluon propagator. This truncation scheme obeys
the axialvector Ward-Takahashi identity relating the quark self-energy and the
Bethe-Salpeter kernel. Two different approximations to the Yang-Mills sector
are used as input: the first is a sophisticated truncation of the full
Yang-Mills Dyson-Schwinger equations, the second is a phenomenologically
motivated form. We find that the spectra and decay constants of pseudoscalar
and vector mesons are overall described well for either approach. Meson mass
results for charge eigenstate vector and pseudoscalar meson masses are compared
to lattice data. The effects of unquenching the system are small but not

Roche tomography of the secondary stars in CVs
The secondary stars in cataclysmic variables (CVs) are key to our
understanding of the origin, evolution and behaviour of this class of
interacting binary. In seeking a fuller understanding of these objects, the
challenge for observers is to obtain images of the secondary star. This goal
can be achieved through Roche tomography, an indirect imaging technique that
can be used to map the Roche-lobe-filling secondary. The review begins with a
description of the basic principles that underpin Roche tomography, including
methods for determining the system parameters. Finally, we conclude with a look
at the main scientific highlights to date, including the first unambiguous
detection of starspots on AE Aqr B, and consider the future prospects of this

A computer program for estimating the aerodynamic characteristics of NACA 16-series airfoils
A computer program written in a table ""look-up'' format, is presented which provides a comprehensive data base on NACA 16-series airfoils. The geometry covered is limited to cambers for a design-lift coefficient from 0.0 to 0.7 and thickness ratios from 4 to 21%. The data include Mach numbers from 0.3 to 1.6, angles of attack from -4 to 8 degrees, and lift coefficients from 0.0 to 0.8. Extrapolation is used to obtain data from Mach numbers, angles of attack, and lift coefficients beyond those for which data are available. A routine to adjust the lift and drag coefficients beyond stall is included. The uses and limitations of the program are also discussed
In-flight simulation investigation of rotorcraft pitch-roll cross coupling
An in-flight simulation experiment investigating the handling qualities effects of the pitch-roll cross-coupling characteristic of single-main-rotor helicopters is described. The experiment was conducted using the NASA/Army CH-47B variable stability helicopter with an explicit-model-following control system. The research is an extension of an earlier ground-based investigation conducted on the NASA Ames Research Center's Vertical Motion Simulator. The model developed for the experiment is for an unaugmented helicopter with cross-coupling implemented using physical rotor parameters. The details of converting the model from the simulation to use in flight are described. A frequency-domain comparison of the model and actual aircraft responses showing the fidelity of the in-flight simulation is described. The evaluation task was representative of nap-of-the-Earth maneuvering flight. The results indicate that task demands are important in determining allowable levels of coupling. In addition, on-axis damping characteristics influence the frequency-dependent characteristics of coupling and affect the handling qualities. Pilot technique, in terms of learned control crossfeeds, can improve performance and lower workload for particular types of coupling. Empathy
After defining empathy, discussing its measurement, and offering an example of empathy in practice, we present the results of an updated meta-analysis of the relation between empathy and psychotherapy outcome. Results indicated that empathy is a moderately strong predictor of therapy outcome: mean weighted r = .31 ( p < .001; 95% confidence interval: .28 –.34), for 59 independent samples and 3599 clients. Although the empathy-outcome relation held equally for different theoretical orientations, there was considerable nonrandom variability. Client and observer perceptions of therapist empathy predicted outcomes better than therapist perceptions of empathic accuracy measures, and the relation was strongest for less experienced therapists. We conclude with practice recommendations, including endorsing the different forms that empathy may take in therapy

Towards Learning ‘Self’ and Emotional Knowledge in Social and Cultural Human-Agent Interactions

Posted by permission of the publisher.This article presents research towards the development of a virtual learning environment (VLE) inhabited by intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) and modeling a scenario of inter-cultural interactions. The ultimate aim of this VLE is to allow users to reflect upon and learn about intercultural communication and collaboration. Rather than predefining the interactions among the virtual agents and scripting the possible interactions afforded by this environment, we pursue a bottomup approach whereby inter-cultural communication emerges from interactions with and among autonomous agents and the user(s). The intelligent virtual agents that are inhabiting this environment are expected to be able to broaden their knowledge about the world and other agents, which may be of different cultural backgrounds, through interactions. This work is part of a collaborative effort within a European research project called eCIRCUS. Specifically, this article focuses on our continuing research concerned with emotional knowledge learning in autobiographic social agents.Peer reviewe
