Blade Sharpness and its Effect on the Testing of Body Armours
Factors such as edge sharpness and tip sharpness have been identified by Horsfall,1 as keyvariables in the testing of stab and slash resistant armours. This paper evaluates the influenceof blade sharpness on the mechanics of penetration and its relationship with a variety ofmaterials used for body armour systems. The differences in performance between blunt andsharp blades are compared by dynamic tests using an instrumented drop tower, measuringpeak loads and energy to penetration. Variance in the initial impact forces required topenetrate body armour between blunt and sharp blades is shown. However, the total energyto penetration for both sharp and blunt knives was found to be similar for a specific bodyarmour system. Dynamic tests were also used to evaluate the effect of wear on bladeperformance by the comparison of the initial loads for puncture and depth of penetration onaramid and metallic armour systems. The effect of sharpness on the reproducibility of testresults is also investigated and discussed. Various test methods are described for themeasurement of sharpness for both stab and slash and compared. The recent development ofa new non-destructive proof test method to measure tip and edge sharpness is also described
The XMM-Newton spectral-fit database
The XMM-Newton spectral-fit database is an ongoing ESA funded project aimed
to construct a catalogue of spectral-fitting results for all the sources within
the XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue for which spectral data products
have been pipeline-extracted (~ 120,000 X-ray source detections). The
fundamental goal of this project is to provide the astronomical community with
a tool to construct large and representative samples of X-ray sources by

Subduction Duration and Slab Dip
The dip angles of slabs are among the clearest characteristics of subduction zones, but the factors that control them remain obscure. Here, slab dip angles and subduction parameters, including subduction duration, the nature of the overriding plate, slab age, and convergence rate, are determined for 153 transects along subduction zones for the present day. We present a comprehensive tabulation of subduction duration based on isotopic ages of arc initiation and stratigraphic, structural, plate tectonic and seismic indicators of subduction initiation. We present two ages for subduction zones, a long‐term age and a reinitiation age. Using cross correlation and multivariate regression, we find that (1) subduction duration is the primary parameter controlling slab dips with slabs tending to have shallower dips at subduction zones that have been in existence longer; (2) the long‐term age of subduction duration better explains variation of shallow dip than reinitiation age; (3) overriding plate nature could influence shallow dip angle, where slabs below continents tend to have shallower dips; (4) slab age contributes to slab dip, with younger slabs having steeper shallow dips; and (5) the relations between slab dip and subduction parameters are depth dependent, where the ability of subduction duration and overriding plate nature to explain observed variation decreases with depth. The analysis emphasizes the importance of subduction history and the long‐term regional state of a subduction zone in determining slab dip and is consistent with mechanical models of subduction
Transmission of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in the UK: a cross-sectional molecular and epidemiological study of clustering and contact tracing
BACKGROUND: Between 2000 and 2012 the number of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis cases in the UK increased from 28 per year to 81 per year. We investigated the proportion of MDR tuberculosis cases arising from transmission in the UK and associated risk factors. METHOD: We identified patients with MDR tuberculosis notified in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland between Jan 1, 2004, and Dec 31, 2007, by linking national laboratory and surveillance data. Data for laboratory isolates, including drug sensitivities and 24-mycobacterial interspersed repetitive-unit-variable-number tandem repeat (MIRU-VNTR) typing were obtained routinely from the National Tuberculosis Reference laboratories as part of national tuberculosis surveillance. We investigated clusters of cases with indistinguishable MIRU-VNTR profiles to identify epidemiological links. We calculated transmission using the n-1 method and established associated risk factors by logistic regression. We also assessed the likelihood of transmission to additional secondary active tuberculosis cases, identified through conventional contact tracing. FINDINGS: 204 patients were diagnosed with MDR tuberculosis in the study period; 189 (92·6%) had an MIRU-VNTR profile. We identified 12 clusters containing 40 individuals and 149 unique strains. The proportion of cases attributable to recent transmission, on the basis of molecular data, was 15% (40 cases clustered-12 clusters/189 with a strain type). The proportion of cases attributable to recent transmission (ie, transmission within the UK) after adjustment for epidemiological links was 8·5% (22 cases with epidemiological links-six clusters/189 cases with a strain type). Being UK born (odds ratio 4·81; 95% CI 2·03-11·36, p=0·0005) and illicit drug use (4·75; 1·19-18·96, p=0·026) were significantly associated with clustering. The most common transmission setting was the household but 21 of 22 of epidemiological links were missed by conventional contact tracing. 13 secondary active tuberculosis cases identified by conventional contact tracing were mostly contacts of patients with MDR tuberculosis from countries of high tuberculosis burden. 11 (85%) of 13 shared the same country of birth as the index case, of whom ten did not share a strain type or drug resistance pattern. INTERPRETATION: Transmission of MDR tuberculosis in the UK is low and associated with being UK born or illicit drug use. MIRU-VNTR typing with cluster investigation was more successful at identifying transmission events than conventional contact tracing. Individuals with tuberculosis who have had contact with a known MDR tuberculosis source case from a country of high tuberculosis burden should have drug-sensitivity testing on isolates to ensure appropriate treatment is given. Report on a mission to Thailand and Bangladesh, 11 March - 12 April 1991 to conduct a socio-economic survey of aquaculture and feed utilisation
The scope for development of small-scale aquaculture as an income generating activity is considerable. Aquaculture has a number of advantages for those with the necessary access to water resources. These include high returns to labour, low initial capital outlay and excellent synthesis within the existing farming and socio-economic system. The mission was particularly struck by the possibilities presented by semi-intensive approaches to increasing yields. These include supplementary feeding and pond fertilisation. Greatly increased production is possible without the complex technology, management know-how or large amounts of working capital usually associated with intensive fish farming in developed countries. The development of appropriate fish production strategies in collaboration with farmers has proved particularly successful, producing widely extendable recommendations which are highly robust. The value of pre-project social and economic appraisal was also highlighted. Where this had been absent, projects were inadequately designed to meet the needs of the market. The mission made particular note of those projects which endeavoured to adopt a demand-led approach. These were markedly more successful than those which were technology led and neglected the needs of the end user. Key social and economic constraints to further development are: provision of credit, access to resources by disadvantaged groups, particularly women, and marketing of fish. Technical constraints were considered subordinate to access to know-how. The use of a process approach to developing new technologies was seen to achieve higher rates of adoption. By this we mean a step-by-step progression in partnership with the beneficiaries in which the perceived needs of the collaborators are addressed iteratively, combining available knowledge and technical know-how to produce pragmatic and usable solutions. There is now, and will be in the future, an increasing need for simple feed for fish. The development and utilisation of feed resources within existing farming systems should follow the approach outlined above and elsewhere in this document. The possible financial, economic and social benefits from increased utilisation of aquatic resources in this way are great. A number of opportunities exist for N1U and these are utlined. In addition, it is recommended that NRI consider its current work programme in the area of small-scale aquaculture farming systems in the light of these findings. The expansion of demand for know-how presents opportunities for consolidation of our comparative advantages, particularly in the areas of socio-economics, social development, farming systems research, feed technology, and process technology
Survey of J=0,1 mesons in a Bethe-Salpeter approach
The Bethe-Salpeter equation is used to comprehensively study mesons with
J=0,1 and equal-mass constituents for quark masses from the chiral limit to the
b-quark mass. The survey contains masses of the ground states in all
corresponding J^{PC} channels including those with "exotic" quantum numbers.
The emphasis is put on each particular state's sensitivity to the low- and

An overview of top-down vs. bottom-up models for informal settlement upgrading in South Africa
The paper explores informal settlement upgrading approaches in South Africa and presents a review of top-down vs. bottom-up models, using experience and lessons learned from the Durban metropolitan area. Reflections on past upgrading efforts suggest that top-down policies in South Africa have not been successful to date. By contrast, participatory techniques, such as planning activism, can be used to enhance community empowerment and a sense of local ownership. This paper reveals that although the notion of ‘bottom-up’, participatory methods for community improvement is often discussed in international development discourses, the tools, processes and new knowledge needed to ensure a successful upgrade are under-utilised. Participation and collaboration can mean various things for informal housing upgrading and often the involvement of local communities is limited to providing feedback in already agreed development decisions from local authorities and construction companies. The paper concludes by suggesting directions for ‘co-producing’ knowledge with communities through participatory, action-research methods and integrating these insights into upgrading mechanisms and policies for housing and infrastructure provision. The cumulative impacts emerging from these approaches could aggregate into local, regional, and national environmental, social and economic benefits able to successfully transform urban areas and ensure self-reliance for local populations
Reply to Comment by Borisenko et al. on article `A de Haas-van Alphen study of the Fermi surfaces of superconducting LiFeP and LiFeAs'
Recently, Borisenko et al have posted a Comment (arXiv:1108.1159) where they
suggest an alternative interpretation of our de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA)
measurements on the superconductor LiFeAs. In our original paper
(arXiv:1107.4375) we concluded that our measurements of the bulk Fermi surface
were not consistent with the surface bands observed thus far by ARPES.
Borisenko et al dispute this and suggest the two measurements are consistent if
some of the orbits we observe are due to magnetic breakdown. We argue here that
this scenario is inconsistent with the experimental data and therefore that our
