    MHC class IIβ diversity as a correlate of neutral-locus similarity and diversity, and a predictor of overwinter return, in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia)

    Abstract The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a family of genes involved with recognizing pathogens and mounting an immune response. Parasite-mediated selection often favours heterozygosity at MHC because MHC-diverse individuals recognize a wider range of pathogens. Because migratory birds encounter many pathogens, I hypothesized that MHC diversity predicts overwinter and juvenile survivorship in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). I found no correlation between MHC diversity and neutral-locus (microsatellite) heterozygosity, suggesting that measures of neutral and adaptive genetic diversity provide complementary rather than redundant information. However, pairwise similarity at MHC predicted pairwise similarity at microsatellite loci. In contrast to my hypothesis, MHC diversity did not predict overwinter return rates (interpreted as survivorship). However, age cohort comparisons showed that adults were more MHC-diverse than nestlings in one of the two years examined. MHC-diverse individuals in this population may thus be more likely to survive to adulthood in some years, but not in others

    Ni vs. Pd in Suzuki-Miyaura sp2-sp2 cross-coupling : a head-to-head study in a comparable precatalyst/ligand system

    We thank the University of St Andrews for a PhD studentship (MJW).The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction is a cornerstone method for sp2-sp2 cross-coupling in industry. There has been a concerted effort to enable the use of Ni catalysis as an alternative to Pd in order to mitigate cost and improve sustainability. Despite significant advances, ligand development for Ni-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling remains underdeveloped when compared to Pd and, as a consequence, ligands for Ni-catalyzed processes are typically taken from the Pd arena. In this study we evaluate the effect of using a similar Ni and Pd precatalyst based on a common bidentate ligand (dppf) in a head-to-head format for the most common type of biaryl couplings, establishing the practical implications of direct replacement of Pd with Ni, and identifying the potential origins of these observations in a mechanistic context.PostprintPeer reviewe

    A ground-based NUV secondary eclipse observation of KELT-9b

    KELT-9b is a recently discovered exoplanet with a 1.49 d orbit around a B9.5/A0-type star. The unparalleled levels of UV irradiation it receives from its host star put KELT-9b in its own unique class of ultra-hot Jupiters, with an equilibrium temperature > 4000 K. The high quantities of dissociated hydrogen and atomic metals present in the dayside atmosphere of KELT-9b bear more resemblance to a K-type star than a gas giant. We present a single observation of KELT-9b during its secondary eclipse, taken with the Wide Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT). This observation was taken in the U-band, a window particularly sensitive to Rayleigh scattering. We do not detect a secondary eclipse signal, but our 3σ\sigma upper limit of 181 ppm on the depth allows us to constrain the dayside temperature of KELT-9b at pressures of ~30 mbar to 4995 K (3σ\sigma). Although we can place an observational constraint of Ag<A_g< 0.14, our models suggest that the actual value is considerably lower than this due to H−^- opacity. This places KELT-9b squarely in the albedo regime populated by its cooler cousins, almost all of which reflect very small components of the light incident on their daysides. This work demonstrates the ability of ground-based 2m-class telescopes like the INT to perform secondary eclipse studies in the NUV, which have previously only been conducted from space-based facilities.Comment: Accepted in ApJL. 7 pages, 3 figure

    Extreme asteroids in the Pan-STARRS 1 Survey

    Using the first 18 months of the Pan-STARRS 1 survey we have identified 33 candidate high-amplitude objects for follow-up observations and carried out observations of 22 asteroids. 4 of the observed objects were found to have observed amplitude Aobs≥1.0A_{obs}\geq 1.0 mag. We find that these high amplitude objects are most simply explained by single rubble pile objects with some density-dependent internal strength, allowing them to resist mass shedding even at their highly elongated shapes. 3 further objects although below the cut-off for 'high-amplitude' had a combination of elongation and rotation period which also may require internal cohesive strength, depending on the density of the body. We find that none of the 'high-amplitude asteroids' identified here require any unusual cohesive strengths to resist rotational fission. 3 asteroids were sufficiently observed to allow for shape and spin pole models to be determined through light curve inversion. 45864 was determined to have retrograde rotation with spin pole axes λ=218±10∘,β=−82±5∘\lambda=218\pm 10^{\circ}, \beta=-82\pm 5^{\circ} and asteroid 206167 was found to have best fit spin pole axes λ=57±5∘\lambda= 57 \pm 5^{\circ}, β=−67±5∘\beta=-67 \pm 5^{\circ}. An additional object not initially measured with Aobs>1.0A_{obs}>1.0 mag, 49257, was determined to have a shape model which does suggest a high-amplitude object. Its spin pole axes were best fit for values λ=112±6∘,β=6±5∘\lambda=112\pm 6^{\circ}, \beta=6\pm 5^{\circ}.     Telomere Rapid Deletion Regulates Telomere Length in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Telomere length is maintained in species-specific equilibrium primarily through a competition between telomerase-mediated elongation and the loss of terminal DNA through the end-replication problem. Recombinational activities are also capable of both lengthening and shortening telomeres. Here we demonstrate that elongated telomeres in Arabidopsis Ku70 mutants reach a new length set point after three generations. Restoration of wild-type Ku70 in these mutants leads to discrete telomere-shortening events consistent with telomere rapid deletion (TRD). These findings imply that the longer telomere length set point is achieved through competition between overactive telomerase and TRD. Surprisingly, in the absence of telomerase, a subset of elongated telomeres was further lengthened, suggesting that in this background a mechanism of telomerase-independent lengthening of telomeres operates. Unexpectedly, we also found that plants possessing wild-type-length telomeres exhibit TRD when telomerase is inactivated. TRD is stochastic, and all chromosome ends appear to be equally susceptible. The frequency of TRD decreases as telomeres shorten; telomeres less than 2 kb in length are rarely subject to TRD.     Ligand-enabled copper-mediated radioiodination of arenes

    The discovery of a copper precatalyst that facilitates the key mechanistic steps of arene halodeboronation has allowed a step change in the synthesis of radioiodine-containing arenes. The active precatalyst [Cu(OAc)(phen)2]OAc was shown to perform room temperature radio-iododeboronation of aryl boronic acids with 1–2 mol % loadings and 10 min reaction times. These mild conditions enable particularly clean reactions, as demonstrated with the efficient preparation of the radiopharmaceutical and SPECT tracer, meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG).Peer reviewe
