Proto-Brown Dwarf Disks as Products of Protostellar Disk Encounters
The formation of brown dwarfs via encounters between proto-stars has been
confirmed with high-resolution numerical simulations with a restricted
treatment of the thermal conditions. The new results indicate that young brown
dwarfs (BDs) formed this way are disk-like and often reside in multiple
systems. The newly-formed proto-BDs disks are up to 18 AU in size and spin
rapidly making small-scale bipolar outflows, fragmentation and the possible
formation of planetary companions likely as have recently been observed for
BDs. The object masses range from 2 to 73 Jupiter masses, distributed in a
manner consistent with the observed sub-stellar initial mass function. The
simulations usually form multiple BDs on eccentric orbits about a star. One
such system was hierarchical, a BD binary in orbit around a star, which may
explain recently observed hierarchical systems. One third of the BDs were
unbound after a few thousand years and interactions among orbiting BDs may
eject more or add to the number of binaries. Improvements over prior work
include resolution down to a Jupiter mass, self-consistent models of the
vertical structure of the initial disks and careful attention to avoid

Low dimensional magnetic solids and single crystal elpasolites: Need for improved crystal growing techniques
The need for extensive crystal growing experiments to develop techniques for preparing crystals suitable for magnetic anisotropy measurements and detailed X-ray and neutron diffraction studies is rationalized on the basis of the unique magnetic properties of the materials and their hydrogen bonded structures which have many features in common with metalloenzyme and metalloprotein active sites. Single crystals of the single and mixed lanthanide species are prepared by the Bridgeman technique of gradient solidification of molten samples. The effects of crystal imperfections on the optical properties of these materials are an important part of the projected research. A series of a-amido acid complexes of first row transition metals were prepared which crystallize as infinite linear chains and exhibit low dimensional magnetic ordering (one or two) at temperature below 40 K
Optimal Moments for the Analysis of Peculiar Velocity Surveys
We present a new method for the analysis of peculiar velocity surveys which
removes contributions to velocities from small scale, nonlinear velocity modes
while retaining information about large scale motions. Our method utilizes
Karhunen--Lo\`eve methods of data compression to construct a set of moments out
of the velocities which are minimally sensitive to small scale power. The set
of moments are then used in a likelihood analysis. We develop criteria for the
selection of moments, as well as a statistic to quantify the overall
sensitivity of a set of moments to small scale power. Although we discuss our
method in the context of peculiar velocity surveys, it may also prove useful in

Flows on scales of 150 Mpc?
We investigate the reality of large-scale streaming on scales of up to 150
Mpc using the peculiar motions of galaxies in three directions. New R-band CCD
photometry and spectroscopy for elliptical galaxies is used. The Fundamental
Plane distance indicator is calibrated using the Coma cluster and an
inhomogeneous Malmquist bias correction is applied. A linear bulk-flow model is
fitted to the peculiar velocities in the sample regions and the results do not
reflect the bulk flow observed by Lauer and Postman (LP). Accounting for the
difference in geometry between the galaxy distribution in the three regions and
the LP clustersconfirms the disagreement; assuming a low-density CDM power
spectrum, we find that the observed bulk flow of the galaxies in our sample
excludes the LP bulk flow at the 99.8% confidence level.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figur
STUDIES ON THE PROPERTIES OF RETINAL ALCOHOL DEHYDROGENASE FROM THE RAT
An NAD-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase (alcohol:NAD oxidoreductase; EC 1.1.1.1) has been isolated and partially purified from the retinal cytosol of the rat. Its substrate specificity and sensitivity to inhibitors of hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase have been investigated. Ethanol, 1-propanol and 1-butanol served as substrates for this enzyme but the K m values were more than 100-fold higher than those reported for hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase. Methanol and retinol were unreactive with this alcohol dehydrogenase. Inhibition by pyrazole was observed but the K t was about 100-fold higher than the value observed for hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase. n -Butyraldoxime inhibited retinal alcohol dehydrogenase with a K t of 2 ÎśM, a value which approximates its K t for hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase. 1, 10-Phenanthroline was ineffective as an inhibitor. Oxidation of retinol was observed in retinal homogenates in the presence of NADP but no inhibition was observed with ethanol, methanol or pyrazole. Investigating the associations between adiposity, life course overweight trajectories, and telomere length
Obesity may accelerate ageing through chronic inflammation. To further examine this association, we assessed current adiposity, adiposity at early adulthood and life course overweight trajectories in relation to leukocyte telomere length (LTL). We included a total of 7,008 nationally representative U.S. residents and collected information on objectively measured body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and percent body fat. BMI at age 25 and overweight trajectories were assessed using self-reported history. Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) relative to a standard DNA reference (T/S ratio) was quantified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Linear regression models were used to examine the difference in LTL across adiposity measures at examination, BMI at age 25, and overweight trajectories. A 0.2% decrease in telomere length (95% CI: -0.3 to -0.07%) was observed for every kg/m2 increase in BMI, whereas a unit increase in waist circumference (cm) and percent body fat contributed to a 0.09% and 0.01% decrease in LTL, respectively. Higher BMI and being obese at age 25 contributed to lower LTL at older ages. Associations between weight loss through life course and LTL were observed, which further marked the importance of life course adiposity dynamics as a determinant of ageing
