Analysis of the Socioeconomic Difficulties Affecting the Suicide Rate in Japan

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the drastic increase observed in the Japanese male suicide rate in the late 1990s and early 2000s and confirms unemployment and personal bankruptcy to be the associated socioeconomic factors behind the male suicide variation. Personal bankruptcy is also confirmed to be significant in the female suicide variation. The relationship is confirmed through a pooled data analysis by a middle-aged group and by prefecture. Further, the paper focused on the association between the unemployment rate and suicide mortality by incorporating the reasons for unemployment in the monthly regression. Next, we identified a significant association between male suicide variations and changes in some of the reasons for being unemployed. The interpretation of the results implies that the risk of unemployment among men has been mitigated by the unemployment insurance rather than the bias in the reasons reported and/or mental disorder in Japan.

An Improvement of Computer Based Test System Based on TCExam for Usage with A Large Number of Concurrent Users

Computer-based test or assessment has been used widely, especially in the current COVID-19 pandemic, where many schools are conducting distance learning as well as distance examination. The need for a computer or software system to support education is inevitable. A range of solutions, from the free/open source software systems to the paid/proprietary ones have been publicly available. Still, an organization with limited resources prefers to find free or low-budget, while yet demanding reliable solutions. We have reported the use of the computer-based test in a new student recruitment test which is held country-wide. We developed the system based on TCExam, a free and open source computer-based test software, and successfully fulfilled the requirements, but with some tweaks. We found that the TCExam has a performance degradation when used by a large number of examinees concurrently, especially during specific phases during the test. This paper reports the result of our investigation to address the problem and suggests some modifications to the base codes as well as a recommendation of the hardware configuration. We evaluated the modified system in a simulated environment. We successfully achieved up to 56% performance gain using the modified system

The small GTPase ADP-ribosylation factor 6 negatively regulates dendritic spine formation

AbstractActin cytoskeletal reorganization and membrane trafficking are important for spine morphogenesis. Here we investigated whether the small GTPase, ADP-ribosylation factor 6 (ARF6), which regulates actin dynamics and peripheral vesicular trafficking, is involved in the regulation of spine formation. The developmental expression pattern of ARF6 in mouse hippocampus was similar to that of the post-synaptic density protein-95, and these molecules colocalized in mouse hippocampal neurons. Overexpression of a constitutively active ARF6 mutant in cultured hippocampal neurons decreased the spine density, whereas a dominant-negative ARF6 mutant increased the density. These results demonstrate a novel function for ARF6 as a key regulator of spine formation

A Research on Concepts of Particle for Substance in High School Chemistry

We have carried out a research on concepts of particle for substance in high school chemistry and junior high school natural science by questionair method with image schema. One of the purposes is the measurement of high school students' understanding depth on substance aas particles. The result shows that many students cannot distinguish pure substance, pure element, pure compound and so many students do not understand physical and chemical changes. Our conclusion is that there are some issues on chemistry culiculum and textbooks in the basic and fundamental level
