    Hohenberg-Kohn theorem for the lowest-energy resonance of unbound systems

    We show that under well-defined conditions the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem (HKT) can be extended to the lowest-energy resonance of unbound systems. Using the Gel'fand Levitan theorem, the extended version of the HKT can also be applied to systems that support a finite number of bound states. The extended version of the HKT provides an adequate framework to carry out DFT calculations of negative electron affinities.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Precession of the Isolated Neutron Star PSR B1828-11

    Stairs, Lyne & Shemar have found that arrival time residuals from PSR B1828-11 vary periodically with a period of 500 days. This behavior can be accounted for by precession of the radiopulsar, an interpretation that is reinforced by the detection of variations in its pulse profile on the same timescale. Here, we model the period residuals from PSR B1828-11 in terms of precession of a triaxial rigid body. We include two contributions to the residuals: (i) the geometric effect, which arises because the times at which the pulsar emission beam points toward the observer varies with precession phase; (ii) the spindown contribution, which arises from any dependence of the spindown torque acting on the pulsar on the angle between its spin and magnetic axes. We use the data to probe numerous properties of the pulsar, most notably its shape, and the dependence of its spindown torque on the angle between its spin and magnetic axes, for which we assume a sum of a spin-aligned component (with a weight 1-a) and a dipolar component perpendicular to the magnetic beam axis (weight a), rather than the vacuum dipole torque (a=1). We find that a variety of shapes are consistent with the residuals, with a slight statistical preference for a prolate star. Moreover, a range of torque possibilities fit the data equally well, with no strong preference for the vacuum model. In the case of a prolate star we find evidence for an angle-dependent spindown torque. Our results show that the combination of geometrical and spin-down effects associated with precession can account for the principal features of PSR B1828-11's timing behavior, without fine tuning of the parameters.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, submitted to MNRAS; added references, corrected typo

    Waiting time dynamics of priority-queue networks

    We study the dynamics of priority-queue networks, generalizations of the binary interacting priority queue model introduced by Oliveira and Vazquez [Physica A {\bf 388}, 187 (2009)]. We found that the original AND-type protocol for interacting tasks is not scalable for the queue networks with loops because the dynamics becomes frozen due to the priority conflicts. We then consider a scalable interaction protocol, an OR-type one, and examine the effects of the network topology and the number of queues on the waiting time distributions of the priority-queue networks, finding that they exhibit power-law tails in all cases considered, yet with model-dependent power-law exponents. We also show that the synchronicity in task executions, giving rise to priority conflicts in the priority-queue networks, is a relevant factor in the queue dynamics that can change the power-law exponent of the waiting time distribution.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, minor changes, final published versio

    Diabetes Mellitus as a Model of Psychosomatic and Somatopsychic Interrelationships

    The article reviews research on the problem of interrelationship between different physical and psychosocial factors in type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). The authors consider methodological principles of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) assessment in DM1 patients and stress the need for an integrated biopsychosocial approach to the management of the disease. DM1 is a chronic metabolic disease with an absolute requirement for insulin replacement therapy. The stress inducing nature of DM1 is associated with its unexpected and dramatic manifestation in juvenile years, life-threatening nature of severe hypo-/hyperglycaemias and long-term complications, with the burden of diabetes self-management, threat of work disability, employment and career problems etc. These features of DM1 increase the likelihood of the development of anxiety and depressive disorders, which, in turn, may negatively influence the course of diabetes and in particular, diabetes self-care. This necessitates early diagnosis of emotional and behavioral disturbances in DM1 using self-report instruments as well as clinical assessment. Evidence suggests that active problem-focused coping behavior and adequate social support promote adherence to diabetes regimes and may act as a buffer against negative effects of the disease on HRQoL in DM1 patients. The core element in the HRQoL structure is personal disease picture (as opposed by objective clinical picture) – the cognitive-affectivebehavioral complex reflecting the patient’s personal perception of the disease. Examination of the personal disease picture and attitude towards the ailment in DM1 patients may help to improve understanding of the mechanisms of poor adjustment. Problems in disease adjustment can be detected also by diabetes-specific HRQoL assessment. The measures of HRQoL can be applied as screening instruments useful in increasing the effectiveness of patient-provider interactions and diabetes care.El artículo revisa la investigación del problema de la interrelación entre diferentes factores físicos y psicosociales en la diabetes melitus tipo 1 (DM1). Los autores consideran los principios de la evaluación de la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud (CVRS) en pacientes de DM1 y ponen de manifiesto la necesidad de un abordaje biopsicosocial integrado del manejo de la enfermedad. La DM1 es una enfermedad metabólica crónica con una necesidad absoluta de terapia de reemplazo de insulina. La naturaleza estresante de la DM1 se asocia con su aparición inesperada y dramática durante los años de juventud, la naturaleza peligrosa de las hipo e hiperglucemias y las complicaciones a largo plazo, con la carga del auto-cuidado de la diabetes, la amenaza de discapacidad laboral, problemas de empleo y carrera, etc. Estas características de la DM1 aumentan la probabilidad de desarrollar trastornos de ansiedad y depresivos que, a su vez, pueden afectar negativamente el curso de la diabetes y, en particular, el auto-cuidado de la diabetes. Esto requiere un diagnóstico temprano de los trastornos emocionales y comportamentales en los enfermos de DM1, empleando instrumentos de auto informe además de la evaluación clínica. La evidencia sugiere que el comportamiento de afrontamiento activo centrado en los problemas y el apoyo social adecuado promocionan la adherencia a los regímenes diabéticos y pueden amortiguar los efectos negativos de la enfermedad en la CVRS en los pacientes con DM1. El elemento esencial en la estructura de la CVRS es el cuadro clínico personal (en contraste con el cuadro clínico objetivo)— el complejo cognitivo-afectivo-conductual que refleja la percepción personal que tiene el paciente de su enfermedad. El examen del cuadro de enfermedad personal y la actitud hacia la enfermedad en los pacientes con DM1 puede mejorar la comprensión de los mecanismos de desadaptación. Los problemas en la adaptación a la enfermedad también pueden detectarse por medio de la evaluación de la CVRS específica para la diabetes. Las medidas de CVRS pueden aplicarse como instrumentos de criba útiles para incrementar la efectividad de las interacciones paciente-cuidador y del cuidado de la diabetes

    Lensing of Fast Radio Bursts by Plasma Structures in Host Galaxies

    Plasma lenses in the host galaxies of fast radio bursts (FRBs) can strongly modulate FRB amplitudes for a wide range of distances, including the \sim Gpc distance of the repeater FRB121102. To produce caustics, the lens' dispersion-measure depth (DM{\rm DM}_{\ell}), scale size (aa), and distance from the source (dsld_{\rm sl}) must satisfy DMdsl/a20.65 pc2 AU2 cm3{\rm DM}_{\ell} d_{\rm sl} / a^2 \gtrsim 0.65~ {\rm pc^2 \ AU^{-2} \ cm^{-3}}. Caustics produce strong magnifications (102\lesssim 10^2) on short time scales (\sim hours to days and perhaps shorter) along with narrow, epoch dependent spectral peaks (0.1 to 1~GHz). However, strong suppression also occurs in long-duration (\sim months) troughs. For geometries that produce multiple images, the resulting burst components will arrive differentially by <1 μ< 1~\mus to tens of ms and they will show different apparent dispersion measures, δDMapparent1\delta{\rm DM}_{\rm apparent} \sim 1 pc cm3^{-3}. Arrival time perturbations may mask any underlying periodicity with period 1\lesssim 1 s. When arrival times differ by less than the burst width, interference effects in dynamic spectra are expected. Strong lensing requires source sizes smaller than (Fresnel scale)2/a({\rm Fresnel~scale)^2} / a, which can be satisfied by compact objects such as neutron star magnetospheres but not by AGNs. Much of the phenomenology of the repeating fast radio burst source FRB121102 is similar to lensing effects. The overall picture can be tested by obtaining wideband spectra of bursts (from <1<1 to 10 GHz and possibly higher), which can also be used to characterize the plasma environment near FRB sources. A rich variety of phenomena is expected from an ensemble of lenses near the FRB source.     Magnetism and local distortions near carbon impurity in γ\gamma-iron

    Local perturbations of crystal and magnetic structure of γ\gamma-iron near carbon interstitial impurity is investigated by {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the carbon impurity creates locally a region of ferromagnetic ordering with substantial tetragonal distortions. Exchange integrals and solution enthalpy are calculated, the latter being in a very good agreement with experimental data.     Patterns of link reciprocity in directed networks

    We address the problem of link reciprocity, the non-random presence of two mutual links between pairs of vertices. We propose a new measure of reciprocity that allows the ordering of networks according to their actual degree of correlation between mutual links. We find that real networks are always either correlated or anticorrelated, and that networks of the same type (economic, social, cellular, financial, ecological, etc.) display similar values of the reciprocity. The observed patterns are not reproduced by current models. This leads us to introduce a more general framework where mutual links occur with a conditional connection probability. In some of the studied networks we discuss the form of the conditional connection probability and the size dependence of the reciprocity.Comment: Final version accepted for publication on Physical Review Letter
