    FITRAH MANUSIA DALAM PANDANGAN ISLAM

    Get PDF

Simultaneous determination of major and minor constituents in cement and steel by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry.

Methods for the simultaneous determination of major and minor constituents in cement and steel samples are developed in this thesis. The effect of matrix elements on analyte emission intensity has been evaluated. Dissolution procedures for these samples are based on the use of acids combined with a microwave-assisted digestion system and all measurements are then carried out by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The previous methods of analysis for these samples has been reviewed. This section includes methods which are recommended by many authorities as Standard Procedures. It was found that the use of a microwave-assisted digestion system, coupled with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, reduced the total analysis time and reduced operating costs. The results obtained for the simultaneous elemental analysis of cement and steel using such methods are found to be in good agreement to the certified values. The methods developed offer the considerable advantages of rapid sample throughput, simplicity of use and are applicable for many routine analytical purposes

Combination of Vorinostat with Whole-brain Radiotherapy in the Treatment of Brain Metastases

Background: A third of patients with solid malignancies develop brain metastases. Expected overall survival is 4-7 months depending on age, performance status, and extracranial disease. Standard treatment is controversial; however, the majority of patients receive wholebrain radiation therapy at some point. Vorinostat (suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid, SAHA), an FDA-approved HDAC inhibitor, has been demonstrated to radiosensitize tumor cells in vitro, as assessed by both radiation-induced DNA damage and clonogenic cell survival (Munshi et al. Molecular Cancer Therapeutics 5, 1967-1974, 2006). We have shown that vorinostat downregulates key genes involved in double-strand DNA repair (Rad50, Rad51, XRCC2, XRCC3, XRCC6), as assessed by quantitative PCR. This suggests that the drug’s mechanism of radiosensitization is epigenetic coordinated inhibition of the DNA repair process. We hypothesize that the combination of vorinostat with whole-brain radiation therapy will be both safe and efficacious. Glucose Transporters in Diabetic Kidney Disease-Friends or Foes?

    Get PDF
Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes and a common cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. DKD manifests as an increased urinary protein excretion (albuminuria). Multiple studies have shown that insulin resistance correlates with the development of albuminuria in non-diabetic and diabetic patients. There is also accumulating evidence that glomerular epithelial cells or podocytes are insulin sensitive and that insulin signaling in podocytes is essential for maintaining normal kidney function. At the cellular level, the mechanisms leading to the development of insulin resistance include mutations in the insulin receptor gene, impairments in the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling pathway, or perturbations in the trafficking of glucose transporters (GLUTs), which mediate the uptake of glucose into cells. Podocytes express several GLUTs, including GLUT1, GLUT2, GLUT3, GLUT4, and GLUT8. Of these, the most studied ones are GLUT1 and GLUT4, both shown to be insulin responsive in podocytes. In the basal state, GLUT4 is preferentially located in perinuclear and cytosolic vesicular structures and to a lesser extent at the plasma membrane. After insulin stimulation, GLUT4 is sorted into GLUT4-containing vesicles (GCVs) that translocate to the plasma membrane. GCV trafficking consists of several steps, including approaching of the GCVs to the plasma membrane, tethering, and docking, after which the lipid bilayers of the GCVs and the plasma membrane fuse, delivering GLUT4 to the cell surface for glucose uptake into the cell. Studies have revealed novel molecular regulators of the GLUT trafficking in podocytes and unraveled unexpected roles for GLUT1 and GLUT4 in the development of DKD, summarized in this review. These findings pave the way for better understanding of the mechanistic pathways associated with the development and progression of DKD and aid in the development of new treatments for this devastating disease.Peer reviewe

Hydrostatic pressure study of paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition in (Ga,Mn)As

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the paramagnetic - ferromagnetic phase transition has been studied in (Ga,Mn)As. The variation of the Curie temperature (TC) with pressure was monitored by two transport methods: (1) - measurement of zero field resistivity versus temperature {\rho}(T), (2) - dependence on temperature of the Hall voltage hysteresis loop. Two specimens of different resistivity characteristics were examined. The measured pressure-induced changes of TC were relatively small (of the order of 1K/GPa) for both samples, however they were opposite for the two.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

Pathologic Correlation of PET-CT Based Auto Contouring for Radiation Planning in Lung Cancer

    Get PDF
Purpose/Objective(s): Radiation therapy in lung cancer relies on CT and functional imaging (FDG-PET) to delineate tumor volumes. Semi-automatic contouring tools have been developed for PET to improve on the inter-observer bias of manual contouring and intrinsic differences in imaging equipment. A common method involves using a threshold at a given percentage of the max activity, which may be less accurate with smaller tumors and tumors with low source to background ratio. To overcome this deficiency, a gradient algorithm, which detects changes in image counts at the border of the tumor, has been developed. Few studies have correlated these methods to pathological specimens. American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 52nd Annual Meeting October 31 - November 4, San Diego, C
