Electronic structure and optical properties of ZnX (X=O, S, Se, Te)
Electronic band structure and optical properties of zinc monochalcogenides
with zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type structures were studied using the ab initio
density functional method within the LDA, GGA, and LDA+U approaches.
Calculations of the optical spectra have been performed for the energy range
0-20 eV, with and without including spin-orbit coupling. Reflectivity,
absorption and extinction coefficients, and refractive index have been computed
from the imaginary part of the dielectric function using the Kramers--Kronig
transformations. A rigid shift of the calculated optical spectra is found to
provide a good first approximation to reproduce experimental observations for
almost all the zinc monochalcogenide phases considered. By inspection of the
calculated and experimentally determined band-gap values for the zinc
monochalcogenide series, the band gap of ZnO with zinc-blende structure has
been estimated.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
On the Classification of Diagonal Coset Modular Invariants
We relate in a novel way the modular matrices of GKO diagonal cosets without
fixed points to those of WZNW tensor products. Using this we classify all
modular invariant partition functions of
for all positive integer level , and for all and infinitely many (in fact, for
each a positive density of ). Of all these classifications, only that
for had been known. Our lists include many
new invariants.Comment: 24 pp (plain tex

Boundary fields and renormalization group flow in the two-matrix model
We analyze the Ising model on a random surface with a boundary magnetic field
using matrix model techniques. We are able to exactly calculate the disk
amplitude, boundary magnetization and bulk magnetization in the presence of a
boundary field. The results of these calculations can be interpreted in terms
of renormalization group flow induced by the boundary operator. In the
continuum limit this RG flow corresponds to the flow from non-conformal to
conformal boundary conditions which has recently been studied in flat space
theories.Comment: 31 pages, Late
Symmetries and reversing symmetries of toral automorphisms
Toral automorphisms, represented by unimodular integer matrices, are
investigated with respect to their symmetries and reversing symmetries. We
characterize the symmetry groups of GL(n,Z) matrices with simple spectrum
through their connection with unit groups in orders of algebraic number fields.
For the question of reversibility, we derive necessary conditions in terms of
the characteristic polynomial and the polynomial invariants. We also briefly
discuss extensions to (reversing) symmetries within affine transformations, to
PGL(n,Z) matrices, and to the more general setting of integer matrices beyond
the unimodular ones.Comment: 34 page
Porosity of silica Stöber particles determined by spin-echo small angle neutron scattering.
Stöber silica particles are used in a diverse range of applications. Despite their widespread industrial and scientific uses, information on the internal structure of the particles is non-trivial to obtain and is not often reported. In this work we have used spin-echo small angle neutron scattering (SESANS) in conjunction with ultra small angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) and pycnometry to study an aqueous dispersion of Stöber particles. Our results are in agreement with models which propose that Stöber particles have a porous core, with a significant fraction of the pores inaccessible to solvent. For samples prepared from the same master sample in a range of H2O : D2O ratio solutions we were able to model the SESANS results for the solution series assuming monodisperse, smooth surfaced spheres of radius 83 nm with an internal open pore volume fraction of 32% and a closed pore fraction of 10%. Our results are consistent with USAXS measurements. The protocol developed and discussed here shows that the SESANS technique is a powerful way to investigate particles much larger than those studied using conventional small angle scattering methods
A framework for the integration of green and lean six sigma for superior sustainability performance
Evidence suggests that Lean, Six Sigma and Green approaches make a positive contribution to the economic, social and environmental (i.e. sustainability) performance of organizations. However, evidence also suggests that organizations have found their integration and implementation challenging. The purpose of this research is therefore to present a framework that methodically guides companies through a five stages and sixteen steps process to effectively integrate and implement the Green, Lean and Six Sigma approaches to improve their sustainability performance. To achieve this, a critical review of the existing literature in the subject area was conducted to build a research gap, and subsequently develop the methodological framework proposed. The paper presents the results from the application of the proposed framework in four organizations with different sizes and operating in a diverse range of industries. The results showed that the integration of Lean Six Sigma and Green helped the organizations to averagely reduce their resources consumption from 20% to 40% and minimize the cost of energy and mass streams by 7-12%. The application of the framework should be gradual, the companies should assess their weaknesses and strengths, set priorities, and identify goals for successful implementation. This paper is one of the very first researches that presents a framework to integrate Green and Lean Six Sigma at a factory level, and hence offers the potential to be expanded to multiple factories or even supply chains
