The purpose of this study was to determine the similarities and differences between the psychological development of African American and Hispanic undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Data were collected to compare, contrast, and identify common trends in the development of African American and Hispanic students. The Nigrescence Model first introduced by William E. Cross in 1971 was administered to a sample of both populations in an effort to determine if the model is applicable to the Hispanic student population. African American and Hispanic undergraduate students identified by the Office of Admissions were surveyed with a response of 144 students. The responses were kept completely confidential and participants were identified by a specific participant number. Chronbach alpha scores indicated that the Cross Racial Identity Scale (CRIS) between African Americans as well as Hispanics show only minor differences in instrument reliability across the five Nigrescence stages. The data derived from the CRIS demonstrated that there are significant differences between African American and Hispanic students in the stages of Miseducation, Self-Hatred, and Ethnocentricity while there were no significant differences between the ethnicities in Assimilation and Antidominance stages. Discussion of the research and implications for practice are presented, along with suggestions for future research

PRACTICES USED BY DAIRY FARMERS TO REDUCE SEASONAL PRODUCTION VARIABILITY

Results of this study further support the effectiveness of the seasonal pricing plan in reducing seasonal production variability. Florida Dairy farmers were able to change factors that affect production in order to take advantage of the seasonal pricing plan and that farmers that chose not to participate were able to affect factors to increase production seasonality.seasonality, Demand and Price Analysis, Livestock Production/Industries,

AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE FLORIDA COOPERATIVE'S SEASONAL PRICING PLAN ON SEASONAL PRODUCTION VARIABILITY

    Get PDF
From 1993 - 1995, Florida dairy cooperatives implemented a seasonal pricing plan in an attempt to decrease the variability in seasonal production. Farmers that participated in the seasonal pricing plan were able to reduce seasonality in each year when compared to 1992 by as much as 20 percent. For farmers that did not participate, seasonality increased in each year by as much as 32 percent. Overall, the seasonal pricing plan was effective in reducing seasonality for those farmers that chose to participate in the plan and that its limited short-run success was the result of seasonality increases by non-participating farms.amplitude, seasonal pricing plan, seasonality, Livestock Production/Industries,

Rapid Publication The Transmembrane pH Gradient Drives Uphill Folate Transport in Rabbit Jejunum Direct Evidence for Folate/Hydroxyl Exchange in Brush Border Membrane Vesicles

    Get PDF
Abstract In rabbit jejunal, but not ileal brush border membrane vesicles, an outwardly directed OH-gradient (pH 7.7 inside, pH 5.5 outside) markedly stimulated the initial velocity of folate (0.1 tiM) uptake compared with uptake in the absence of a pH gradient. Under pH gradient conditions, folate was transiently accumulated at a concentration four times that found at equilibrium (overshoot), implying uphill transport of the vitamin. Equilibrium folate uptake was inversely proportional to medium osmolality, suggesting uptake into an osmotically sensitive space. pH gradient-stimulated folate uptake was markedly reduced by inhibitors of anion exchange (4,4'-diisothiocyano-2,2'-disulfonic acid stilbene; 4-acetamido-4-isothiocyanostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid; furosemide), and was saturable (folate K., = 0.19±0.02 gsM; V, = 12.8±0.4 pmol -mg protein-' . min-). Imposition of an inside-positive electrical potential did not stimulate folate uptake, suggesting that stimulation by a pH gradient was not due to an induced electrical potential. In contrast, an inwardly directed Na' or K' gradient did not stimulate folate uptake. These findings provide evidence for a carrier on the jejunal brush border membrane that mediates folate/OH-exchange (or HW/folate co-transport), and are consonant with the known presence of an outwardly directed OH-gradient in vivo (brush border acid microclimate), an acidic pH optimum for intestinal folate uptake, and the primary role of the jejunum in folate absorption

O trabalho do professor EBTT: entre a exigĂȘncia do capital e a possibilidade humana

    Get PDF

Genetic Candidate Variants in Two Multigenerational Families with Childhood Apraxia of Speech

    Get PDF
Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a severe and socially debilitating form of speech sound disorder with suspected genetic involvement, but the genetic etiology is not yet well understood. Very few known or putative causal genes have been identified to date, e.g., FOXP2 and BCL11A. Building a knowledge base of the genetic etiology of CAS will make it possible to identify infants at genetic risk and motivate the development of effective very early intervention programs. We investigated the genetic etiology of CAS in two large multigenerational families with familial CAS. Complementary genomic methods included Markov chain Monte Carlo linkage analysis, copy-number analysis, identity-by-descent sharing, and exome sequencing with variant filtering. No overlaps in regions with positive evidence of linkage between the two families were found. In one family, linkage analysis detected two chromosomal regions of interest, 5p15.1-p14.1, and 17p13.1-q11.1, inherited separately from the two founders. Single-point linkage analysis of selected variants identified CDH18 as a primary gene of interest and additionally, MYO10, NIPBL, GLP2R, NCOR1, FLCN, SMCR8, NEK8, and ANKRD12, possibly with additive effects. Linkage analysis in the second family detected five regions with LOD scores approaching the highest values possible in the family. A gene of interest was C4orf21(ZGRF1) on 4q25-q28.2. Evidence for previously described causal copy-number variations and validated or suspected genes was not found. Results are consistent with a heterogeneous CAS etiology, as is expected in many neurogenic disorders. Future studies will investigate genome variants in these and other families with CAS
