A LINEAR DYNAMIC MODEL OF ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION

This paper shows the relationship between the Maximum Respiration Hypothesis and the principle of ecological succession by means of a simulation using a linear dynamic model of a hypothetical grassland ecosystem. It will reveal the possibility of turnpike stability for ecological succession, which has not been discussed in the realm of ecology. Turnpike stability is a feature of systems incorporating growth. If we can confirm that real ecological succession has this stability, we have the important conclusion that differences in the initial conditions of succession, which are known as primary succession and secondary succession, have little influence not only on the configuration of the climax but on the configuration of the path of ecological succession
