Effect of Local Magnetic Moments on the Metallic Behavior in Two Dimensions
The temperature dependence of conductivity in the metallic phase
of a two-dimensional electron system in silicon has been studied for different
concentrations of local magnetic moments. The local moments have been induced
by disorder, and their number was varied using substrate bias. The data suggest
that in the limit of the metallic behavior, as characterized by
, is suppressed by an arbitrarily small amount of scattering by

Absence of Localization in Certain Field Effect Transistors
We review some experimental and theoretical results on the metal-to-insulator
transition (MIT) observed at zero magnetic field (B=0) in several
two-dimensional electron systems (2DES). Scaling of the conductance and
magnetic field dependence of the conductance provide convincing evidence that
the MIT is driven by Coulomb interactions among the carriers and is

Alternative Mortgage Instruments in California
Much interest has been generated recently in California and elsewhere in what have been termed alternative mortgage instruments (AMIs). Two separate sets of pressures have been responsible for this. One has been the tremendous increase in the cost of lendable funds requiring constantly higher yield on each lender\u27s overall mortgage portfolio. This has been induced by the inexorable increase in interest rates required to be paid by mortgage lenders in order to obtain lendable funds for home ownership loans, along with unremitting escalation of operating costs. The second pressure has been the persistent escalation of the cost of the conventional home with its typical purchase money mortgage so that an increasing segment of potential new homeowners is being priced out of the market
A study of the application of singular perturbation theory
A hierarchical real time algorithm for optimal three dimensional control of aircraft is described. Systematic methods are developed for real time computation of nonlinear feedback controls by means of singular perturbation theory. The results are applied to a six state, three control variable, point mass model of an F-4 aircraft. Nonlinear feedback laws are presented for computing the optimal control of throttle, bank angle, and angle of attack. Real Time capability is assessed on a TI 9900 microcomputer. Do oil and gas platforms off California reduce recruitment of bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis) to natural habitat? An analysis based on trajectories derived from high-frequency radar
To investigate the possibility that oil and gas platforms may reduce recruitment of rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) to natural habitat, we simulated drift pathways termed âtrajectoriesâ in our model) from an existing oil platform to nearshore habitat using current measurements from high-frequency (HF) radars. The trajectories originated at Platform Irene, located west of Point Conception, California, during two recruiting seasons for bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis): May through August, 1999 and 2002. Given that pelagic juvenile bocaccio dwell near the surface, the trajectories estimate transport to habitat. We assumed that appropriate shallow water juvenile habitat exists inshore of the 50-m isobath. Results from 1999 indicated that 10% of the trajectories represent transport to habitat, whereas 76% represent transport across the offshore boundary. For 2002, 24% represent transport to habitat, and 69% represent transport across the offshore boundary. Remaining trajectories (14% and 7% for 1999 and 2002, respectively) exited the coverage area either northward or southward along isobaths. Deployments of actual drifters (with 1-m drogues) from a previous multiyear study provided measurements originating near Platform Irene from May through August. All but a few of the drifters moved offshore, as was also shown with the HF radar-derived trajectories. These results indicate that most juvenile bocaccio settling on the platform would otherwise have been transported offshore and perished in the absence of a platform. However, these results do not account for the swimming behavior of juvenile bocaccio, about which little is known
Overcoming cognitive set bias requires more than seeing an alternative strategy
Determining when to switch from one strategy to another is at the heart of adaptive decision-making. Previous research shows that humans exhibit a âcognitive setâ bias, which occurs when a familiar strategy occludesâeven much betterâalternatives. Here we examined the mechanisms underlying cognitive set by investigating whether better solutions are visually overlooked, or fixated on but disregarded. We analyzed gaze data from 67 American undergraduates (91% female) while they completed the learned strategy-direct strategy (LS-DS) task, which measures their ability to switch from a learned strategy (LS) to a more efficient direct strategy (DS or shortcut). We found that, in the first trial block, participants fixated on the location of the shortcut more when it was available but most (89.6%) did not adopt it. Next, participants watched a video demonstrating either the DS (Nâ=â34 Informed participants) or the familiar LS (Nâ=â33 Controls). In post-video trials, Informed participants used the DS more than pre-video trials and compared to Controls. Notably, 29.4% of Informed participants continued to use the LS despite watching the DS video. We suggest that cognitive set in the LS-DS task does not stem from an inability to see the shortcut but rather a failure to try it
