    Breathing Space Final Evaluation Report

    Breathing Space was a women-centred project, funded by the Tampon Tax Fund through the Department of Digital Culture Media and Sport. It aimed to reduce distress and the harmful impact of domestic abuse on women and their children. The focus of this project was support for women who have suffered complex trauma and are experiencing difficulties in their lives as a result. WHM provided safe space for women to “stabilize”, helping women to access internal and external resources and develop stress management skills and so address the critical first stage of trauma recovery. Breathing Space ran from August 2017 until March 2020. This report documents the findings from an independent evaluation of Breathing Space, drawing upon qualitative and quantitative data collected throughout the delivery period of the project

    Effect of Alkyl Chain Length and Linker Atom on the Crystal Packing in 6,12-Dialkoxy- And 6,12-Dialkylsulfanyl-Benzo[1,2- b:4,5- b′]bis[ b]benzothiophenes

    The effect of varying the chain length on the solid state conformation and packing of 6,12-dialkoxy- and 6,12-dialkylsulfanyl-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]bis[b]benzothiophenes has been studied. The compounds were prepared by SNAr reaction of 6,12-difluorbenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]bis[b]benzothiophene with alkoxides or alkanethiolates derived from C7-C10 alcohols and alkanethiols. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all but two compounds crystallize in the triclinic space group P1. Two compounds were obtained as monoclinic crystals with space group P21/c. The alkoxy substituted compounds adopted a molecular conformation with a step from the core and a gauche conformation about the C1′-C2′ bond placing the alkyl chains close to parallel with the pentacyclic arene ring system, whereas in the alkylsufanyl derivatives, the alkyl chains were arranged strongly deviated from the plane of the ring, with the sulfur atom antiperiplanar to C3′ of the alkyl chain. NMR measurement of T1 relaxation in CDCl3 showed both the alkoxy and alkylsulfanyl substituents to be freely rotating at ambient temperature in solution, indicating the orientation of the chains in the solid state was due to packing interactions during crystallization

People with MS (MSers) report that interacting with a different individual each week helped reduce feelings of isolation and reinforced a sense of community. The project was co-commissioned by Locala, a provider of NHS community services and Connect Housing, a charitable housing association based in the voluntary sector. This report presents the findings from an evaluation of the joint pilot project conducted by the Centre for Health Promotion Research, Leeds Beckett University. It presents evidence about the project’s background, the outcomes for service users, the Health and Support Worker role, multi-agency working, reductions in health service usage costs, and maps the evaluation evidence against Care Closer to Home Key Performance Indicators as well as overall learning from the project

    BeppoSAX Observations of the Maser Sy2 Galaxy: ESO103-G35

    We have made BeppoSAX observations of the Seyfert 2/1.9 galaxy ESO103-G35, which contains a nuclear maser source and is known to be heavily absorbed in the X-rays. Analysis of the X-ray spectra observed by SAX in October 1996 and 1997 yields a spectral index 0.74+/-0.07, typical of Seyfert galaxies and consistent with earlier observations of this source. The strong, soft X-ray absorption has column density 1.79E(23)/cm^2, again consistent with earlier results. The best fitting spectrum is that of a power law with a high energy cutoff at 29+/-10 keV, a cold, marginally resolved Fe Kalpha line with EW 290 eV (1996) and a mildly ionized Fe K-edge at 7.37 keV. The Kalpha line and cold absorption are consistent with origin in a accretion disk/torus through which our line-of-sight passes at a radial distance of 50\sim 50 pc. The Fe K-edge is mildly ionized suggesting the presence of ionized gas probably in the inner accretion disk, close to the central source or in a separate warm absorber. The data quality is too low to distinguish between these possibilities but the edge-on geometry implied by the water maser emission favors the former. Comparison with earlier observations of ESO103-G35 shows little/no change in spectral parameters while the flux changes by factors of a few on timescales of a few months. The 2--10 keV flux decreased by a factor of 2.7 between Oct 1996 and Oct 1997 with no detectable change in the count rate >20 keV suggesting a constant or delayed response reflection component. The high energy cutoff is lower than the typical 300keV values seen in Seyfert galaxies. A significant subset of similar sources would affect current models of the AGN contribution to the cosmic X-ray background which generally assume a high energy cutoff of 300 keV.Comment: 22 pages, postscript file, accepted for publication in Ap

    X-Ray Spectroscopy of the Low-Mass X-ray Binaries 2S 0918-549 and 4U1543-624: Evidence for Neon-Rich Degenerate Donors

    We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the neutron-star/low-mass X-ray binaries 2S 0918-549 and 4U 1543-624 with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Reflection Grating Spectrometer onboard XMM-Newton. Previous low-resolution spectra of both sources showed a broad line-like feature at 0.7 keV that was originally attributed to unresolved line emission. We recently showed that this feature could also be due to excess neutral Ne absorption, and this is confirmed by the new high-resolution Chandra spectra. The Chandra spectra are each well fit by an absorbed power-law + blackbody model with a modified Ne/O number ratio of 0.52+/-0.12 for 2S 0918-549 and 1.5+/-0.3 for 4U 1543-624, compared to the interstellar-medium value of 0.18. The XMM spectrum of 2S 0918-549 is best fit by an absorbed power-law model with a Ne/O number ratio of 0.46+/-0.03, consistent with the Chandra result. On the other hand, the XMM spectrum of 4U 1543-624 is softer and less luminous than the Chandra spectrum and has a best-fit Ne/O number ratio of 0.54+/-0.03. The difference between the measured abundances and the expected interstellar ratio, as well as the variation of the column densities of O and Ne in 4U 1543-624, supports the suggestion that there is absorption local to these binaries. We propose that the variations in the O and Ne column densities of 4U 1543-624 are caused by changes in the ionization structure of the local absorbing material. It is important to understand the effect of ionization on the measured absorption columns before the abundance of the local material can be determined. This work supports our earlier suggestion that 2S 0918-549 and 4U 1543-624 are ultracompact binaries with Ne-rich companions.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, major revisions including addition of XMM spectral analysis, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, vol. 59
