    Mapping intellectual disciplines using author co-citation analysis (ACA)

    Peter Warning is a new lecturer in the Information & Technology Division. He comes from an LIS background. Over the past decade he has undertaken a number of author co-citation analyses (ACA).Author Co-citation Analysis (ACA) is an established method for identifying the different components of a discipline by mapping patterns of publication. ACA techniques have been applied and refined for over 30 years. They can be applied to any discipline or sub-discipline which has a substantial body of published literature.     Information seeking behavior of police officers in Hong Kong: an exploratory study

    Open URL - http://www.academic-conferences.org/pdfs/ICICKM10-Booklet.pdfThe information seeking behavior of a random sample of 40 Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) officers was investigated from the perspectives of: information seeking behavior; type of searching undertaken; level of sophistication of searching; ability to retrieve required information, and use of the HKPF Library (HKPFL). Frameworks such as: the information seeking process (Chowdhury 2004); the information management cycle (Choo, 1998); and the Information seeking of professionals model (Leckie, Pettigrew & Sylvain 1996), were applied. Data gathering methods included: survey; interview; observation; and case study. Results indicate that the respondents are not, overall, effective information seekers. The respondents generally apply simple retrieval techniques despite perceiving them to be less effective than more advanced techniques. The respondents were often unable to effectively frame simple enquiries. A novice member was less effective and slower at retrieving information than an experienced member, suggesting that transfer of organizational members’ knowledge of information seeking to newer members could be valuable. The sampled HKPF members prefer using print materials to electronic materials or web pages, although these formats are also popular. 27 (67.5%) respondents visit the HKPFL two or less times per week, while 36 (90%) respondents visit the HKPFL website two or less times per week. Most respondents use the HKPFL for leisure rather than work related purposes, although this behavior is both position and department sensitive. Most respondents prefer to browse the collections on shelves and seek help from librarians instead of searching the library catalogue. Recommendations for improving HKPF members’ information skills include: information literacy instruction for new recruits; promoting the HKPFL as an information hub; providing guides for use; and further developing the HKPFL to match members’ information needs by improving collections.published_or_final_versionThe 7th International Conference on Intellectual Capital, Knowledge Management & Organisational Learning (ICICKM 2010), Hong Kong, China, 11-12 November 2010.     Differential expression of collectins in human placenta and role in inflammation during spontaneous Labor.

In the present study, we aimed to investigate their placental transcript synthesis, labor associated differential expression and localization at feto-maternal interface, and their functional implication in spontaneous labor. The study involved using feto-maternal interface (placental/decidual tissues) from two groups of healthy pregnant women at term (≥37 weeks of gestation), undergoing either elective C-section with no labor ('NLc' group, n = 5), or normal vaginal delivery with spontaneous labor ('SLv' group, n = 5). The immune function of SP-D, on term placental explants, was analyzed for cytokine profile using multiplexed cytokine array. SP-A, SP-D and MBL transcripts were observed in the term placenta. The 'SLv' group showed significant up-regulation of SP-D (p = 0.001), and down-regulation of SP-A (p = 0.005), transcripts and protein compared to the 'NLc' group. Significant increase in 43 kDa and 50 kDa SP-D forms in placental and decidual tissues was associated with the spontaneous labor (p<0.05). In addition, the MMP-9-cleaved form of SP-D (25 kDa) was significantly higher in the placentae of 'SLv' group compared to the 'NLc' group (p = 0.002). Labor associated cytokines IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α and MCP-1 showed significant increase (p<0.05) in a dose dependent manner in the placental explants treated with nSP-D and rhSP-D.     Approaching effects of the economic crisis on university efficiency: a comparative study of Germany and Italy

    In this paper, we compare the efficiency of the Italian and German universities in the process of transforming public funding into the multiple outputs of a university, i.e. graduating students, publishing research, and patenting activity. We do this with a particular focus on the policies implemented following the financial crisis in 2008. Using a sample of 133 public universities, of which 73 public universities in Germany and 60 public universities in Italy observed over the period 2006–2011 we find that Italian universities perform significantly better in terms of output maximization than German universities. The crisis does not show a general impact, while the treatment effect indicates that Italian universities coped better during the crisis than their German counterparts at a highly significant level

    Ten golden rules for optimal antibiotic use in hospital settings: the WARNING call to action

    Antibiotics are recognized widely for their benefits when used appropriately. However, they are often used inappropriately despite the importance of responsible use within good clinical practice. Effective antibiotic treatment is an essential component of universal healthcare, and it is a global responsibility to ensure appropriate use. Currently, pharmaceutical companies have little incentive to develop new antibiotics due to scientific, regulatory, and financial barriers, further emphasizing the importance of appropriate antibiotic use. To address this issue, the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery established an international multidisciplinary task force of 295 experts from 115 countries with different backgrounds. The task force developed a position statement called WARNING (Worldwide Antimicrobial Resistance National/International Network Group) aimed at raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance and improving antibiotic prescribing practices worldwide. The statement outlined is 10 axioms, or “golden rules,” for the appropriate use of antibiotics that all healthcare workers should consistently adhere in clinical practice

    Blogging for information management, learning, and social support during internship

    The functions and possibilities afforded by blogging have been suggested to be relevant to learning and information management. Its increasing use in the business and education sectors is documented, but currently its use in professional education or internship is limited. The social nature of blogging appears to support the applicability of blogs to facilitate learning and communication between student interns. To contribute to the empirical evidence supporting these propositions, this study investigated the use of web logs to facilitate information management, learning, and mutual support for internship students. Undergraduate information management students (N=53) formed three cohorts who used three different blogging platforms in the course of their internships. They evaluated the use of blogs through an interview questionnaire that included close-ended rating scales and open-ended probes. The results revealed that students generally have positive perceptions on blogging as a tool to facilitate information management and mutual support. Blogs were also perceived to be useful in terms of self-reflection and communication. This study also showed that the blogging platform does not seem to have an impact on the students' perceptions on the use of the blogs, whereas the communication between students and supervisors through the blog comments needs to be improved. © International Forum of Educational Technology & Society (IFETS)

    Encouraging and sustaining reading among primary aged children in rural China

    This study reports on a project for encouraging the reading habit among primary school-aged children in rural China framed within the context of donor support. It is based on observations from site visits to five Chinese provinces and draws on evidence from both developing and developed countries. The resulting framework reflects library science, pedagogical, and systemic elements. Key aspects include: mutual obligations between partners, initiation and support of free voluntary reading, training for library staff, standards for libraries, and the role of leadership at all levels.
