The Parasitic Worms of Man and the Domestic Animals

    Get PDF
This article has been written for the general information of those engaged either on a large or on a small scale in stock raising in our own state particularly, and, while not intended to be a complete treatise on the subject, it includes references to those parasites which seem to be the most important or most likely to be found within our borders. The parasites of cattle, sheep, horse, hog, dog, cat, and man, which have many species in common, form the subject of this paper. The parasites of domestic fowl are, however, quite different from those considered here and are omitted in the expectation that it may be possible soon to treat them in a special article. All scientific work at present is recorded in the metric system, and the amount of labor necessary to reduce the measurements given in various books of reference to the English system was so great that it seemed best to reproduce the measurements here in metric units and add a table by which those who wished could change them when necessary. The growing use of the metric system in our own country and the ease in manipulation afforded by it arouse the hope that it may soon be the prevalent system even outside of scientific circles

A New Human Tapeworm (\u3ci\u3eTaenia confusa\u3c/i\u3e n. sp.), an Entozoon, Probably of Order Cestoidea

Somewhat more than a year ago a tapeworm was sent me which at first sight appeared decidedly unlike either Taenia saginata or Taenia solium. It showed the slender form and more delicate appearance of the latter, but was in length of segments even decidedly larger than the former species. Some notes were made at the time, and then, on account of pressure in other directions, laid aside to await opportunity for further study. This winter I received a second specimen which at once recalled the first, and on comparison was seen to be identical with it. A series of measurements was made from the entire length of the specimen, and comparison with those given for the familiar species in Leuckart * strengthened the belief that this was an unknown form of the genus. One of my students is at present engaged in a detailed description of this specimen, and closer study shows beyond question the specific rank of the form. It seems proper, however, that, in advance of this detailed study, some general description of the form should be published, in order to call attention to the existence, in this region at least, of a species hitherto unknown or confused with one of the familiar species. We are especially desirous of obtaining more material, and take this occasion to beg that specimens of tapeworm be sent from all regions for identification and study. The University will gladly pay the cost of transportation on such material

Increasing Doses of Intraoperative Hydromorphone Do Not Reduce Postoperative Pain

    Get PDF
Introduction: • Intermediate and long acting opioids are given intraoperatively to reduce pain during emergence from anesthesia. • Recent evidence suggests that intraoperative opioids have inconsistent effects on nociception and pain in the immediate postoperative period. • Multiple potent, short-acting opioids such as remifentanil, sufentanil and fentanyl have been shown to produce dose-related increases in pain scores and opioid consumption in the immediate postoperative recovery period. • Intraoperative doses of longer acting opioids such as morphine and methadone6 have been shown to reduce pain scores and narcotic requirements in the immediate postoperative period. • Hydromorphone is an intermediate duration narcotic which is commonly used intraoperatively but has not been studied for its potential to reduce pain in the immediate postoperative period

Purpose: Wnt signalling has been implicated in breast cancer, and in particular aberrant β-catenin-independent Wnt signalling has been associated with breast cancer metastasis and Tamoxifen resistance. Despite Wnt pathway involvement in many human cancers, attempts to target the pathway therapeutically have been disappointing. The recent discovery that the receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 (ROR2) is a novel Wnt receptor provides a potential new therapeutic and diagnostic target

Assessing the Effectiveness of House-to-House Visits on Routine Oral Polio Immunization Completion and Tracking of Defaulters

Strengthening routine immunization is one of the four prongs of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Using data collected through 30-cluster sample household surveys of caretakers of children aged 12-23 months, this paper assessed the effectiveness of house-to-house visits on routine oral polio immunization completion, using simple frequency tables, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Logistic regression results demonstrated that children in households where the caregivers reported receiving a household visit by health workers were more likely to be fully immunized for polio through routine immunization than other children, although results were significant only after correcting for confounders. In Ethiopia and India, children of caregivers who remembered a house-to-house visit were significantly and positively associated with routine polio vaccination completion (OR=2.2 and OR=2.2 respectively). In Angola, the association was positive, though not significant (OR=1.3). The evidence suggests that targeting high-risk areas for house-to-house visits played a role in increasing routine polio vaccination
