The Second Sex vs. The Forgotten Sex: Exploring the missing masculinity component and the involvement of men in gender and development in Egypt

    Get PDF
This research explores the masculinity component of gender and development (GAD) interventions in Egypt. Women\u27s empowerment has been the center of interventions in most developing countries, including Egypt. Men\u27s engagement has been peripheral and limited to certain issues. The objective of this research was to gain insights about missing aspects regarding the involvement of men in developmental interventions, including suggestions for enhancing male engagement in communities. The research employed qualitative research methodology for data collection through focus groups with men in four villages in Assiut, and in-depth interviews with stakeholders of GAD. Analysis and coding of data was carried out using NVivo software using a pre-determined analysis framework that corresponded to content of data collection tools. Results revealed a diverse range of issues that men perceived to be needs, primarily economic empowerment and vocational training activities given the challenging economic conditions in Egypt. Other social issues, particularly marital relationships and parenting, were attributed to stressful economic conditions necessitating the need for psychosocial and psychoeducational interventions. This paper recommends placement of gender and masculinity interventions in the economic context of Egypt and a re-connection between gender policy and programming. There is a need for innovative participatory and asset-based programming by building on existing men\u27s leadership in communities, while adapting successful interventions from other similar country contexts. This should be coupled with adopting a psychosocial and psychoeducational approach when targeting men. Sustainability (attaining community self-sufficiency) can be achieved through community capacity development and technical training of personnel implementing programs in communities

Creating place-based learning experiences as a curriculum enactment approach: a case study of selected business studies teachers' practices in Papua New Guinea

    Get PDF
John Wanis Tapura explored how business studies teachers in Papua New Guinea (PNG) perceive and enact the national curriculum goals, policies, and resources in terms of place-based education aspirations. John found that teachers based their curriculum aims and practices on their lived experiences in and out of school, rather than the intentions of the national curriculum. In terms of translating curriculum policy, teachers were unfamiliar with the national curriculum statement and framework, including place-based learning. John recommended that curriculum as autobiography, teacher agency, and teacher beliefs and the teachers lived experiences of the 'place' are some important aspects of curriculum implementation with place-based learning considerations that PNG needs to support teachers to adopt for improved enacted curriculum practices

Securities Law - McCormick v. Fund American Companies: Altering The Total Mix of Information Made Available During Disclosure In Corporate Repurchases Of Stock

In McCormick v. Fund American Companies, the Ninth Circuit granted summary judgment to defendant corporation over plaintiff shareholder\u27s claim that defendant had violated the Securities Exchange Act by misrepresenting or omitting material information during negotiations to repurchase stock from plaintiff. The court found that in light of plaintiff\u27s status as a sophisticated business executive, defendant\u27s alleged misrepresentations and omissions did not significantly alter the total mix of information made available concerning the contemplated sale of a subsidiary company of defendant corporation

The aim of the present study is to investigate the utilization of barium titanate (BaTiO3) as a radiopacifier in poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for dental base material in order to obtain a radiopaque polymer. The formulation used in this study comprises of PMMA, BaTiO3, benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as the initiator, methyl methacrylate as the monomer and ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linking agent

    Tax Evasion Determinants in Algeria

The study looks into the way in which tax evasion could be a problem to the government of Algeria. The study is based on looking into four variables that will be used to see or analysis how organizations and people how are in Algeria are evading tax. The four variables that are mentioned in this study are penalties, tax rate, education, and confidence in government of any country that will be responsible for making sure that each and every citizen of a country pays his or her own tax charges. The reason why these four variables where selected is that they were noted as the major variables that are leading to people and companies in Algeria not abiding by the regulatory authorities that are responsible of collecting tax. This were the contributing factors to many individuals not paying tax as they felt that the government is over charging them when it comes to paying tax and there are no penalties that are given to individuals or co-operations that are not paying their tax. The limitations that were noted are that accessing adequate information to actually see what is really happening in Algeria for people to evade tax

Emergency department design evaluation and optimization using discrete event simulation

The proposed research would help any architect/owner decide the number of rooms/ cubicles for each sub-department of the ED, as well as have an estimated price for the ED, in order to optimally serve patients entering the ED with a known arrival rate. A thorough literature review was undertaken to collect data concerning the application of decision support tools for minimizing patient waiting times and maximizing the utilization rate in health care systems. Interviews were made with hospital managers in order to verify process flow, waiting times, activity durations, and resources. In addition, several floor plans of EDs have been studied in order to assure the logical flow of the process. Based on the data collected and the several verifications, a discrete event simulation model was developed using ARENA software. This simulation model was then verified by building a similar model on different software, which was AnyLogic. The results proved the accuracy of the model. Twenty additional simulation runs were performed to be used for the regression analysis. The equations resulted from the regression analysis were used for the optimization model. A genetic algorithm was used for the purpose of obtaining optimized resource allocation for different arrival rates within a constrained budget, area, and patient waiting time in the system

DIPL 6116 The Palestinian-Israeli Negotiations and Peace Process

    Get PDF
Prerequisite: DIPL 6104/4183 Art and Science of International Negotiation or permission of instructor. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is generally thought to be intractable. Much journalistic and even scholarly work tends to be partisan, while contributing little to our understanding of how this conflict can be resolved. In fact, there is a significant history of attempts to transform this conflict into coexistence, some of it more and some of it less successful. The instructor will build on his significant field research into the open and secret negotiations between Israel and the PLO, as well as the long history of Arab Zionist encounters. Participants will the course by applying lessons learned to other major, seemingly intractable conflicts. A major component of the class will be the simultaneous conduct of actual negotiations by the participants, who will join one of four delegations: a Palestinian or an Israeli negotiation delegation, negotiating either interim or permanent issues. For Summer 2003, the course will be taught as an intensive, one week executive format. Beyond learning the significant history, diplomacy and negotiation efforts, participants will gain insight by actually joining either an Israeli or Palestinian delegation and negotiating

DIPL 1001 Games of International Relations

    Get PDF
In this concentrated module, you will 1. become aware of concepts from game theory and 2. learn how to apply them to historical and current events in international relations, including international conflicts and international negotiations 3. gain knowledge of this complex topic in a way that is enjoyable, retainable and useful for your further study at the Whitehead School. Class discussion will be emphasized, as well as historical knowledge and analytical thinking. A significant, but short writing assignment will be used to assess your learning. There will be a series of critical readings, but no single textbook. The level of the reading is advanced, but you are expected to \u27stretch\u27 in order to grasp what is being discussed, and in-class discussions will be used to clarify and apply these concepts. Failures to do the readings, tum in assignments on time or to properly cite sources (plagiarism) are grounds for a grade of F, and possible expulsion from the Whitehead School
