A multi-agent based evolutionary algorithm in non-stationary environments
This article is posted here with permission of IEEE - Copyright @ 2008 IEEEIn this paper, a multi-agent based evolutionary algorithm (MAEA) is introduced to solve dynamic optimization problems. The agents simulate living organism features and co-evolve to find optimum. All agents live in a lattice like environment, where each agent is fixed on a lattice point. In order to increase the energy, agents can compete with their neighbors and can also acquire knowledge based on statistic information. In order to maintain the diversity of the population, the random immigrants and adaptive primal dual mapping schemes are used. Simulation experiments on a set of dynamic benchmark problems show that MAEA can obtain a better performance in non-stationary environments in comparison with several peer genetic algorithms. This work was suported by the Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant No. 70431003, the Science Fund for Creative Research Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant No. 60521003, the National Science and Technology Support Plan of China under Grant No. 2006BAH02A09, and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of the United Kingdom under Grant No. EP/E060722/1
Adaptive primal-dual genetic algorithms in dynamic environments
This article is placed here with permission of IEEE - Copyright @ 2010 IEEERecently, there has been an increasing interest in applying genetic algorithms (GAs) in dynamic environments. Inspired by the complementary and dominance mechanisms in nature, a primal-dual GA (PDGA) has been proposed for dynamic optimization problems (DOPs). In this paper, an important operator in PDGA, i.e., the primal-dual mapping (PDM) scheme, is further investigated to improve the robustness and adaptability of PDGA in dynamic environments. In the improved scheme, two different probability-based PDM operators, where the mapping probability of each allele in the chromosome string is calculated through the statistical information of the distribution of alleles in the corresponding gene locus over the population, are effectively combined according to an adaptive Lamarckian learning mechanism. In addition, an adaptive dominant replacement scheme, which can probabilistically accept inferior chromosomes, is also introduced into the proposed algorithm to enhance the diversity level of the population. Experimental results on a series of dynamic problems generated from several stationary benchmark problems show that the proposed algorithm is a good optimizer for DOPs.This work was supported in part by the National Nature Science Foundation of China (NSFC) under Grant 70431003 and Grant

On general systems with network-enhanced complexities
In recent years, the study of networked control systems (NCSs) has gradually become an active research area due to the advantages of using networked media in many aspects such as the ease of maintenance and installation, the large flexibility and the low cost. It is well known that the devices in networks are mutually connected via communication cables that are of limited capacity. Therefore, some network-induced phenomena have inevitably emerged in the areas of signal processing and control engineering. These phenomena include, but are not limited to, network-induced communication delays, missing data, signal quantization, saturations, and channel fading. It is of great importance to understand how these phenomena influence the closed-loop stability and performance properties
Figure of Merit for Dark Energy Constraints from Current Observational Data
Choosing the appropriate figure of merit (FoM) for dark energy (DE)
constraints is key in comparing different DE experiments. Here we show that for
a set of DE parameters {f_i}, it is most intuitive to define FoM =
1/\sqrt{Cov(f1,f2,f3,...)}, where Cov(f1,f2,f3,...) is the covariance matrix of
{f_i}. The {f_i} should be minimally correlated. We demonstrate two useful
choices of {f_i} using 182 SNe Ia (compiled by Riess et al. 2007), [R(z_*),
l_a(z_*), \Omega_b h^2] from the five year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe
(WMAP) observations, and SDSS measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillation
(BAO) scale, assuming the HST prior of H_0=72+/-8 km/s Mpc^{-1} and without
assuming spatial flatness. We find that the correlation of (w_0,w_{0.5})
[w_0=w_X(z=0), w_{0.5}=w_X(z=0.5), w_X(a) = 3w_{0.5}-2w_0+3(w_0-w_{0.5})a] is
significantly smaller than that of (w_0,w_a) [w_X(a)=w_0+(1-a)w_a]. In order to
obtain model-independent constraints on DE, we parametrize the DE density
function X(z)=\rho_X(z)/\rho_X(0) as a free function with X_{0.5}, X_{1.0}, and
X_{1.5} [values of X(z) at z=0.5, 1.0, and 1.5] as free parameters estimated
from data. If one assumes a linear DE equation of state, current data are
consistent with a cosmological constant at 68% C.L. If one assumes X(z) to be a
free function parametrized by (X_{0.5}, X_{1.0}, X_{1.5}), current data deviate
from a cosmological constant at z=1 at 68% C.L., but are consistent with a
cosmological constant at 95% C.L.. Future DE experiments will allow us to
dramatically increase the FoM of constraints on (w_0,w_{0.5}) and of (X_{0.5},
X_{1.0}, X_{1.5}). This will significantly shrink the DE parameter space to
enable the discovery of DE evolution, or the conclusive evidence for a
cosmological constant.Comment: 7 pages, 3 color figures. Submitte
Acoustic bubble removal method
A method is described for removing bubbles from a liquid bath such as a bath of molten glass to be used for optical elements. Larger bubbles are first removed by applying acoustic energy resonant to a bath dimension to drive the larger bubbles toward a pressure well where the bubbles can coalesce and then be more easily removed. Thereafter, submillimeter bubbles are removed by applying acoustic energy of frequencies resonant to the small bubbles to oscillate them and thereby stir liquid immediately about the bubbles to facilitate their breakup and absorption into the liquid
Clustering induced suppression of ferromagnetism in diluted magnets
Ferromagnetism in diluted magnets in the compensated regime p << x is shown
to be suppressed by the formation of impurity spin clusters. The majority bulk
spin couplings are shown to be considerably weakened by the preferential
accumulation of holes in spin clusters, resulting in low-energy magnon
softening and enhanced low-temperature decay of magnetic order. A locally
self-consistent magnon renormalization analysis of spin dynamics shows that
although strong intra-cluster correlations tend to prolong global order, T_c is
still reduced compared to the ordered case.Comment: published version, 5 pages, 4 figure
